I need to vent or cry or something...

I don’t know whether to cry or beat someone up….sorry this is such a long post but I needed to vent and most all my good friends just moved to this board and I needed a little bit of love and hugs…

My daughter and her boyfriend traveled to SLC to pick up a new puppy last Saturday. They already have a five-month-old American Pitt Bull Terrier. I know everyone has given these wonderful dogs a bad reputation but this dog is a sweetheart. I’m a grandma to a dog…they can say, do ya want to go to Grandma’s and he will wait at the door until they bring him to my house. We are neighbors and just a wheat field away. I really think when the warm weather comes and he finds out where I live he will be running though the field to my house.

Anyway…back to the new puppy. She was a beautiful chocolate brown, a sweetheart of a puppy, same age and the pup they already have…Brody. They picked her up last Saturday. She was beautiful. I know I keep talking about her in the past tense…

As we played with her and loved her, we noticed that she had something weird going on with her right hind leg. Our daughter took her to the vet today to have her spayed and he took a look at the leg and told us that she had Hip Dysplasis and that it would be a waste of money and time to spay her because of how progressed the disease was. The vet said it is rare for a young pup to have it this bad. She hardly had a hip socket at all. Of course, he told us what to expect as far as a prognosis goes. As we watched her the rest of the day we could see her pain. She wouldn’t play like a puppy does…she just laid on the couch and watched the other puppy play. The doc told us that she would never be better than she was today.

I think you all know where this is going…the vet lives in our neighborhood and is the greatest guy and we totally trust him. My daughter just fell apart because she really grew to love this little girl as she called her…Rosie…

Well, tonight around 10pm we had the vet put her down. We did the right thing because of how sick she was. A puppy should not be in pain.

My anger is directed towards the previous owners. This pup had had all of her shots and had been seen by a vet so you know that they knew of her condition. My daughter has called them many times over the past few day and they are not answering her calls. They gave this pup away with the pretence that all was well. How dare they…put this horrible responsibility on my daughter to put this pup down…I am so angry I want to spit.

So sorry this was so long…:(

Tammy, I just cried as I read your post. What a heartless person to do this to someone AND an innocnet puppy.

I am so sorry that you and your family had to go through this. I know how quickly you can become attached to a pet. My cats are members of the family - just thinking about something happening to them or them getting sick can make me cry. :(

You did the right thing - as painful as it may have been - because you put the puppy's welfare first. More than the thoughtless previous owner did.

They will pay for this - might not be right now - but they will pay for it.

jprinz99 01-22-2008 07:57 AM

Tammy,

My heart breaks for you and your family. It is so very hard to loose a furkid. Mine mean the world to me as I can tell Rosie did to all of you.

Just a thought- if she was registered or comes from reg stock report the breeders and prior owners to the APBT association. Maybe being able to prevent another pup and its family from having to go thru this will help ease your grief and anger somewhat. Just a thought.

Hope the Brody is doing ok as animal can sense loss too. Dog biscuit being nudged his way.

Aw Tammy:hug: I feel your pain. I am so sorry about your puppy and I certainly know what it feels like to have to put the puppy down.

A couple of months ago I had a beautiful puppy named Remi. I got her at 8 weeks old and immediately fell in love with her. She never acted normal and took her to the vet several times.

It turned out she had intestinal problems which according to my vet if she was vet checked before I got her they would have noticed. She was a very sick puppy and because there was no way he could fix the problem at 12 weeks I had to put her down.

I cried for days Tammy! I am so sorry you and your daughter have to go through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you both

Hi Tamiloo and Welcome to NT.

I am so sorry about the lil puppy! I am such a dog lover, it breaks my heart to read this..... As hard as it was for them, it was right for the lil pup. I just feel really bad, as my two doxies are my babies.

take care Tam...

anon72413 01-22-2008 08:26 AM

you go right ahead and vent and spit it all out... :(

that was a terrible situation! ....but obviously that lil sweet thing couldn't have been in a better place for her short life.... and with better people her last hour.

sassy 01-22-2008 08:30 AM

Tammy, I know it is hard. My sympathy is with you and your family.

D_HOLLAND 01-22-2008 08:48 AM

Sorry about the puppy I'm a dog lover so I feel your pain

Riverwild 01-22-2008 08:51 AM

Tami, So sorry to hear this.

The poor little puppy, at least she was in a good place and is out of her pain now.

There's a special place deep down under for those people, never fear!

NaeNae 01-22-2008 09:07 AM

((((((((((((TAMMY))))))))))))))))))))

So glad to see u made it here, but so sorry to hear the news. But if I were a puppy in pain your place would have been top picks for to go! Sorry she had to be put down, but as you said seeing them so miserable just isn't fair.

Wanna go find the prvious owners? I still have a good softball bat, we can show them what its like to be in pain? :mf_argue:

tkrik 01-22-2008 09:20 AM

Oh the poor puppy. Tammy, I'm so sorry. However, on a positive note, that puppy was so lucky to have you all. Because of you're loving and caring DD, Rosie was well taken care of. Who knows what the previous owner would have done with her. Let her live with that kind of pain. Never take care of her properly. Oh it makes me so mad when people mistreat animals.

You are right about the pit bulls. They do have a bad reputation. However, DBF has a pit/chow/lab mix. Buster is the sweetest dog and quite the "sissy." LOL He is so afraid of thunder that he will hop on your lap (all 70 pounds) or put his head under a pillow like a little child. LOL.

Take care and know that you all did the right thing.

btw - Glad to see you over here.

SandyC 01-22-2008 12:15 PM

Oh Tammy, I am so sorry about this. I am a fur baby lover and it breaks my heart that the previous owners wont even answer the phone. How sad. They will get their due in time.

SallyC 01-22-2008 12:29 PM

Awwwww, Tammy, bless you and DD for being there for poor little Rosie. She went to doggy heaven knowing she was loved and I'm glad she's out of pain.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier...didn't sleep well and was still resting...

Thank you so much for your comment cim...my daughter has called me from her work twice crying and asking me if she did the right thing...

Thanks...good to be here...the previous owner finally texted my daughter this morning asking if the pup was ok....she hasn't responded back to her. She just feels so bad. Its one of those maybe we could have made her comfortable for a little longer and waited until it got worse. She already couldn't put much weight on the leg.

Brody is doing great...he is just doing a lot of sleeping. He too is a sissy. He loves to snuggle and when my daugter leaves the room even to go to the potty he can't stand to be away from her. If she scolds him he will put his head down and pout...he is such a great dog.

MamaMonkey 01-22-2008 02:28 PM

 How terrible. I am so sorry.

NurseNancy 01-22-2008 02:31 PM

tamiloo 01-22-2008 03:53 PM

My daughter works in a docs office...during her lunch she called and I read bits and pieces of your post to her...she cried but she said it is helping her to accept the decision she made...all day long she has said she thinks she made the wrong decision in putting her down...

Thak you guys...:grouphug:

Pickles 01-22-2008 06:41 PM

Wretched and deplorable don't even begin to cover what those people did. I know it broke your hearts but you let that puppy know what it is to be loved, something I sincerely doubt she got from the previous people.

(((((Hugs)))))

FinLady 01-22-2008 06:46 PM

(((HUGS))) I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. :(

MSCherokee 01-22-2008 06:50 PM

Aw Tami,

I'm so sorry to hear about the puppy. Pickles is right, your family was able to show that puppy what it's like to be loved. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

misshayleesmom 01-22-2008 07:35 PM

Tammy,

I feel so badly for you and your family.
What a horrible thing to go through.
That pup was blessed to have you all love him...

Hugs to you and family:grouphug:

MSacorn 01-22-2008 07:41 PM

Tammy
Your post broke my heart. I feel for you and your family. It is difficult to do the right thing, but lil Rosie is more comfortable now. With all the love in your family Brody and any new additions will be loved oodles.

BTW, a warm welcome to you.

Vegasgrl 01-22-2008 07:43 PM

Tamiloo - That is so horrible! You know I'm not that far from Utah, I could make a trip up there and give them hip displasia!! :mf_swordfight:

It's hard enough having to put a pet down but for it to be a puppy, it just breaks my heart!

janlici 01-22-2008 08:32 PM

That breaks my heart, Tami, but you did the right thing.

My daughter also has an APBT. She's almost 6 years old and her best friend is the cat that lives next door to them. ;). You're right....they have such a bad rep and they're really just like any other dog. They're as good as the people who own them and train them. She's big and dopey and kisses everything that moves!

I'm sorry for your loss, but that puppy is lucky to have found someone to take care of her the right way!

ckepi 01-22-2008 10:51 PM

Oh I'm so sorry you all had to go thru that.

How terrible of those people.

Thankfully Rosie knew you and your DD's love the last few weeks.

(((HUGS))))

Brody is like that...kisses everything that moves or that he moves past. My son came out of his bedroom and made a noise he wasn't sure of and he barked and growled and wet himself...
