Did everyone (but me) have blood work & LP done @ the same time?

Am I the only one that had an LP and did NOT have blood work done at the same time?

I now understand that I needed to have blood work done at the same time or the LP doesn't mean much. My neuro just doesn't seam to have he's act together.:(

I only ever had bloodwork....never got an LP.

I don't recall having blood work done with my LP either - but like you - I think it was your post on the other board where I learned that you should have both done at the same time....

That was the first I had heard of that.

They didn't draw any blood work at all before or after your LP??????:Scratch-Head:

The only way to see if there is an immune response in the CSF is to compare it to a sample from the blood. If there are any O-Bands in the CSF, that result has to be compared to the blood. If there are the same number, then it is normal. If there are 2 or more bands in the CSF not present in the blood, then that is diagnostically important. Other diseases can cause O-Bands in the CSF, but if the rest of your clinical picture is indicative of MS, that could be the final piece of the puzzle.

My LP didn't have a blood test with it. My bloodwork, and lots of it, came weeks afterwards.

Chris 01-24-2008 06:01 PM

I had my LP and MRI on the same day, if I recall correctly. I had already had the blood work done prior to the LP and MRI.

My case was a bit odd, in that I was diagnosed on the same day I went for my MRI, however.

babs954 01-24-2008 06:21 PM

I had bloodwork about a week before my LP but not the same day.

sugarboo 01-24-2008 06:38 PM

As you know, I had my LP and was quickly thrown out the door, no coke offered, no nap, no nothing...

Then they called me at home and said

"Oh, we forgot to get your blood, you HAVE to come back TODAY or you did the LP for nothing" :mfr_wha:

So I did

:Scratch-Head:

Thats all I know to share....

Yes I remember, you had yours right after me. I almost got the same treatment, I did get to lay there about 10 minutes.

Oh my goodness !!!
I have FINALLY decided to allow my Neuro to do another LP on me after many years and last summer she tried her best to talk me into one.

I am going to discuss with my Neuro ahead of time now to put on my order not to let me up for several hours - I don't want to get pushed out the door the way you both were - that is just WRONG !!! I had the spinal headache after my LP back in 2000 and had to have the blood patch and I do not want to go through that again if I can keep from it.

Bearygood 01-24-2008 07:22 PM

Another one that skipped the LP here, due to my happy little brain lesions.

You don't want to hear how bad my LP was, it was 2 weeks ago and I'n still now OK yet and I have been to the ER 3 times. It was painful, he didn't numb me and had to stick me 6 times! :(

barb02 01-24-2008 07:49 PM

I had both done at the same time. My neuro just said I would need to have blood drawn after the procedure.

I can see how an LP could be done with little or no side effects. I really kick myself too, since I knew from this board, that I was to stay down for 2-3 hours. IF and when this happens again, It's MY way :D LOL!!

I guess that will become my statement in the future when I answer the question. Good for people to know how it can go wrong. I don't ever want to scare anybody.

Let us know when you go in, will save prayers for you.

I remember having to have blood taken just before my LP. I was never told why, never gave it a second thought until now.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! A good explanation!!

There is blood work and there is THAT BLOODWORK done in conjunction with the LP/ST. Different, very different!

We all get loads of bloodwork for mimics etc, but this blood work is a very different animal and might well be the defining piece in your puzzle.

I have had 4 LPs :( all with bloodwork, and for one the LP was actually delated till the orders for the bloodwork showed up...the Radiologist refused to proceed til then, said it would be a waste of time and unfair to me.

Ooops, need to introduce myself soon...I'm a stowaway from that other place. ;)

OMG, all of that sounds so aweful! I hope they don't "have" to redo yours! I'm just going to do the happy dance with BG that I never had to get an LP.

donnat521 01-25-2008 08:57 AM

yes I had bloodwork drawn immediately prior to my LP.

TooTired 01-25-2008 09:03 AM

LP a week after bloodwork

My neuro drew blood at the same time she scheduled my LP which was a week later.

momXseven 01-25-2008 09:33 AM

I even looked at the blood work my Dr did and he didn't even do blood that has o-bands, he wasn't testing me for MS, he was just doing the LP to get me off his back. :(

donnat521 01-25-2008 10:30 AM

I believe the blood they draw just prior to your LP is to check for clotting and so on. I know they spun mine right there before they would even bring me in for the LP. They said I wasnt anemic and that my clotting time was good. I dont know about other people

Mine was ANA panel, Lyme, B12, Folate acid, RA & Thyroid.
Dr was SO sure that my numbness was low B12.

donnat521 01-25-2008 10:50 AM

ahh ok that was all done prior to my LP.. They drew the blood while waiting to do my lp. She drew it right up at my bedside then about an hour later I went in for my LP after they had the results of my blood and the doc was ready. They couldnt have gotten the results of all you got drawn up that quickly lol.. I would have been laying there for a good week waiting on those.. I had everyblood test known to man drawn up within the last 3 months prior to my LP, because I Do sometimes have a clotting time issue.. they made sure prior to mine that my clotting time was ok. I just thought they did this with everyone just prior to their LP.

bluenurse 01-25-2008 10:58 AM

I can't remeber if I had blood work drawn with my LP. I don't think I did. I know my first neuro (that did the LP) didn't order the right labs when he sent it out to Mayo. But I didn't need the results anyway, because I was already DX. So, it was a wasted procedure for me,with a headache to boot.
