Luke is going in for more surgery

Some of you know my beloved greyhound Luke. He was my lei-wearing avatar at MSW. I haven't bothered to search out the avatar file yet.

This morning, I noticed this giant lump near the junction of his hip/back/leg area. It seriously came out of nowhere and looked like an alien might come out of it. Of course, by the time he had his vet appt at 2 pm, it was almost down. Vet didn't think much of it, but got some fluid and it looks like he's got some mast cells in there which likely indicate a tumor. Poor boy has to go in and get it removed on Monday. He had a muscle cancer in 2003, a giant benign spleen tumor in March 07, and now this. He's 11 years old and my best boy.

I'm not really worried about it right now, and I don't know why. I was frantic last year. I guess I'll know more in a week or so after they take it out and biopsy it. I just feel bad knowing that he's got another surgery to go through. It sucks getting old. I don't know how much longer I'll have him, but I hope he will continue to have a great quality of life for as long as I do have him.

hollym 01-24-2008 05:36 PM

:hug:Sorry to hear about Luke. I remember his giant spleen last year. It's hard to see one of our fur babies go through this stuff.

Oh Greta,
I'm sorry to hear this, but hope that everything turns out well. I understand where you're coming from. Dylan, our Chocolate Lab is our baby, and whenever anything happens to him, I fall apart. I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow, and hope thay Luke fares well!

All the best,
Chris

Koala77 01-24-2008 05:44 PM

Poor Luke. I hope it doesn't turn out to be anything nasty for him, and that he's soon over his operation. Hugs for Luke....

kinch52 01-24-2008 07:34 PM

Oh Greta, I sorry he has to go through so much.

I know how much Luke means to you & I'm glad you aren't worrying too much right now. I think that must be a good sign. Alot of us are as good at "doggy" intuition as Moms do are with their kids. I know I do, I can always tell when somethings wrong.

I bet you are as good of friends with your vet as I am mine! ;)

DM 01-24-2008 07:43 PM

Hi Greta~ Poochie smoochies to our Lukie.
Hey, good rhyme. Keep us posted Gret!

Gazelle 01-24-2008 07:56 PM

Sorry to hear about your Luke. I'm a real animal lover, so feel for you.

Hope it all goes well for him.

Maybe your lack of freaking out is because you came to terms with his mortality last year and this is just a minor bump right now. Anyway, it's a good thing that you're calm. He'll sense if you're apprehensive!

Taffy 01-24-2008 08:22 PM

OH, I will be thinking of your Luke!

Jappy 01-24-2008 08:37 PM

Greta so sorry to hear about Luke.

Understand your feelings. Prayers for Luke. You keep strong. Keep us informed of his progress.

Joyce (Jappy)

KajunButterfly 01-24-2008 10:09 PM

((( hugs))) Greta and prayers for you and Luke.

thav1 01-24-2008 10:54 PM

They really are just our babies in fur coats. I hope all goes well for your furry baby.

Greta

I am sorry about Luke! I hope all goes well with his surgery on Monday!

Holly just had her staples out today from her giant lipoma removal 2 weeks ago. She says Luke will be fine! ;)

Carolina 01-25-2008 12:32 AM

Ah, Greta, I am sorry. I'll be keeping you and Luke in my thoughts and wishing for the best.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I came so close to losing him, and feel that this last year is a gift. All the more reason to continue to spoil him rotten!

I'll trust holly's doggy intuition! Thanks! :)

Kitty 01-25-2008 11:03 AM

I'm keeping Luke in my prayers - I'm certain he will do just fine and will be back to normal before you know it.

Aren't our pets just the best?! I'd be lost without my persnickety little furbabies! :D

SandyC 01-27-2008 12:15 AM

Keeping your fur baby Luke in my thoughts and prayers. I hope all goes fine on Monday.

tovaxin_lab_rat 01-27-2008 12:16 AM

Hope you are having a good weekend Greta! Hugs to you and the pups!

greta 01-29-2008 09:20 AM

My poor frankendoggy. He has 4 sets of stitches. They didn't give me painkillers last night for him so I doped him up with benadryl. He couldn't even lay down. Finally between DH and I, we managed to drop him on his side so he could finally get some rest.

This morning the bugger was playing with his toys and chowing breakfast - guess he's feeling better.:) I'll have the biopsy results in a week or so.

hollym 01-29-2008 09:35 AM

Poor puppy! I'm glad the surgery is over and he is on the road to feeling better! Now, we have to pray for good biopsy results.

BaxterTheBunny 01-29-2008 09:50 AM

So glad he's doing better after his operation. And glad he has someone as loving as you to take care of him and give him a good home.

DM 01-29-2008 09:59 AM

Thanks for the update, Gret.. I was wondering about our lil Lukie.

It's a good sign that he's eating and interested in his toys.

I'll cross my fingers that his results will be normal.

Smoochie Lukie for me again! :)

ckepi 01-29-2008 11:05 AM

Oh Greta I'm sorry your boy has to go thru that. They really are part of our hearts aren't they.

I hope it goes well and will say a little prayer for him.

jprinz99 01-29-2008 11:12 AM

Dear Greta-

I am glad to hear he came thru the surgery pretty good. I am saying a qiuet little prayer the biopsy turns out fine and this was all a scare. Tyler the wonder dog says give him a huge Milk Bone (and says he doesn't even have to share!)

tovaxin_lab_rat 01-29-2008 03:47 PM

Hiya Greta

Glad Luke is home and on the mend! Our pups are pretty resilient aren't they!

Hugs and treats for our boy!

Gazelle 02-11-2008 05:43 PM

Any update on the biopsy results?

Jules A 02-11-2008 07:19 PM

OMG how did I miss this? Sending hugs and a pm.

greta 02-12-2008 08:59 AM

Said in my best forrest gump voice, "Lukie's got the cancer";)

Yup, grade 2 mast cell tumor. They don't know if they got it all and talked about going back in or doing chemo. I'm not sure what I think about that. He had a muscle tumor 4 years ago without a clear margin, and he was just fine. We may play it by ear. I'll hear more when the margin report comes back in.

He's doing wonderfully right now - happy as a clam, full of energy, enjoying his walks more than ever, so we may just stay the course. He's the best dog ever!

I'm so sorry the results weren't benign, Greta! I will hope and pray for the best.

Gazelle 02-12-2008 07:49 PM

 Well, it isn't anything you didn't expect, but that doesn't quell the sinking heart feeling, huh? Your boy sounds like a good guy.

Guess you'll have to base your decision on whether or not you think he could handle another surgery so soon after the one he just had or whether or not the expense of doing chemo will really add much to his life. It might just make his life more miserable.

The boy's lived a good life so far, especially with having you as his person, so if you decide to let him live without chemo (based on a quality of life analysis), then you're not doing him wrong. You only have his best interests at heart, so you won't let him suffer no matter what decision you make.

Those little buggers crawl right into our hearts and take over. It's hard to be so attached to one of them. Love's fun. :)

Riverwild 02-13-2008 01:49 AM

I don't know how I missed this thread Greta. I am so sorry to hear about Luke's news.

He sounds like he is comfortable right now and I hope the margins come back clear.

I hope YOU are doing ok.

Hugs to you and a treat and a pat for Luke.

Please let us know how it goes.

Jodylee 02-13-2008 06:16 AM

Oh Greta, I'm so sorry about Luke! My sister just found a large lump on her baby, Saint. He's an 8 yr old Weimeraner (sp). That is pretty old for his breed. She has to take him to the vet yet. I really don't know how she's going to handle this. She doesn't have any kids and he is her oldest 'son'. I'm hoping for the best. Big ((HUGS)) for you & Luke. Our pets really are a part of the family.

greta 02-13-2008 09:19 AM

Thanks Joelle!

Here's to hoping your sister's dog's lump is nothing. Vet just checked Chipper for a lump last week and it's just a fatty lipoma that doesn't need to come off. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

anon72413 02-13-2008 03:01 PM

aww.... bummer, greta...
it really is amazing tho that he has survived after all he's already battled...
with his 'gump'tion, i have a feeling he's gonna win this one too ;)

i'm sure he feels your will for his life!

thanks for letting us share the journey with you, friend!

ewizabeth 02-13-2008 03:21 PM

Hi Greta,

I just read the whole thread and I'm glad Luke is feeling better. I hope that what they did will give him a new lease on life, and to feel good enough that the cancer goes into a long remission. The poor little guy sounds so sweet. I'm sure your love is what keeps him going.
