Any quilters???
Just wondering if there are any other quilters around these parts???
I started quilting over 15 years ago! |
Yorkiemom on PN
is a quilter. I don't think she reads this forum tho. You might PM her.
I've seen her work...it is beautiful. |
I can crochet but always wanted to quilt.
|
MRSD, Thanks for the YorkieMom tip!
Shelley, maybe nows a good time to quilt! I know there are a couple more here! |
I don't quilt, I just started to sew. I love sewing, so I'm thinking about learning to quilt. Did you pick it up on your own, or did someone teach you? Is there any special equipment you need to do it?
|
Thank you MrsD
I am a quilter and love working with beautiful fabrics. I have only been quilting for a few years, trying to remember when I started. I am probably the world's slowest quilter, but I really enjoy it.
I just got a longarm Gammill machine a couple of months back and am attempting to learn how to use it. Quilting can be very relaxing-I think it is a great prescription for getting one's mind off of their health issue... Try it... It is addictive!!! Then you can have a fabric stash like me... :) I don't think you have to do anything special to learn how to quilt. You can buy a beginner's book and probably do very well this way. My friend and I took a beginning quilt class though, and learned a lot of the basics in this manner. Learning to use a longarm, I think, is going to be a horse of a different color... I will need more instruction than the books offer... Nice to see a place where you all are posting... Cathie |
Hey Blue! I think you would fit right in the quilting world! :D
I learned to quilt from a good friend of mine, who has since died. What she taught me was invaluable. You certainly can learn on your own. Look in the library for quilting books and start playing! Or look into taking a beginner's class at a quilt shop or sewing center. I prefer handquilting, but also do machine (not the long arm like Yorkiemom!) I don't have space for that machine! machine quilting, I found is really good for quilts that will be washed a lot (kid use type stuff). I hand piece and machine piece. I used to never be found without some handwork! I'd like to get back in that habit! Quilting is so much more of a therapy than you can ever imagine! |
I have quilted in the past...the last was about 5 years ago...I think it is time for a new one.
I want to do my bedroom in Tuscan...I was thinking of making the comforter in rich green, burgundy, gold Tuscan designs. I found some beautiful fabric but wasn't enough...so I am looking for more... I like to use a serge machine when possible for quilting...it just makes it easier on the hands when all those squares need to be squared. lol Bird...where do you live now...I think you moved from one state to another...right? |
Hey Momma!
No, I'm still in Georgia! I FINALLY started on 2 quilted stockings I was going to have done for Christmas 2007....whoops a little late! But I so enjoy sewing and quilting. Blue, all you need is some fabric (preferably 100% cotton, and needle and thread!) Are you thinking you'll start? |
Bird,
You really have jump started my interest. I'm going to the library today to get a book on quilting. I really love sewing.(just finished curtains for 2 rooms). I'm going to start small with scraps I have around the house. If I'm any good at it, then I'm going for a bedroom quilt. Thanks for giving me the suggestion and encouragement!! |
pillows are great starting projects! Then a small quilt for a baby or for a lap....
You will love it! |
one of my friends just finished a big , big quilt in honor of her nephew who passed in the 9-11 tragedy (N.Y.F.D.) he also had aids and her quilt is a beautiful tribute to him and aids awareness and also those lost on 9-11.
I myself do not sew or anything but it is a big craft with many groups and clubs here in Florida. and I go to the shows amazed at how wonderful the quilts look and feel . a scarp of this and a scrap of that . . . sewn together and a master piece appears. one of you should post a pic of your quilting. :) Peace and Love BMW |
hey .. I sew ALOT ... and quilt some .. but the sewing is independent of the quilting ... so .. really - I don't quilt quilt .. I sew and tie ... and sew and sew and sew ...
quilting is the 'end' of a project .. it's all the sewing done BEFORE any quilting is attempted ... and when it's time to quilt .. sometimes I tie ... so ... am I really a 'tire'?? :Wheel: inquiry minds would like to know!! |
Quilt
I've always thought about doing quilting, but with all my other hobbies keeping me busy, I just haven't had time!:o lol
I helped last year with a quilt made at our local church, there were 5 of us who worked on the panels, and one friend, Julie, then put it all together as she was great at quilting. It was made into a wall hanging, and hangs in the church. (I've attached a picture.) Now, everytime I look at that quilt, I remember Julie, because she was taken by cancer last Sept...:icon_cry: ~Jaime~ |
I'm a quilter although lately I've been sucked up by knitting, crocheting, and tatting. I like to spin, and I also adore origami. I'm a little overboard on decorative geometry. :-)
I need to get back to quilting actually; I've got a finished top that's needed to get basted for ages. It's for a friend's wedding, and they've been married for *mumbledy* years now. *sigh* |
Bird...don't know why I thought you had moved. It's just too darned bad we don't live closer together, we could quilt while watching the neighbors. lol

I have just recently got into sewing...........
By nature I am an outdoors girl...hunting and fishing and farmin....well thanks to this ole disease I have been trapped indoors much to much. So Thanks to the love of a dear friend whom gave me a sewing machine around Christmas time and the guiding hand of my grand mother, the love of quilts and crafts passed down from from generations gone by....I am now a sewing person. I have recently made my first piece work wall hanging. I have it all sewn together and am ready to quilt it. It will be a wall hanging with the picture pockets on it....dont know if ya'll have seen them or not but they are way cool. I dont have a pattern just a picture of one so I am going all on my own with no prior experience ............lol this should be a true test of my abilitites.........I HAVE LOVED IT SO FAR........If it turns out well (making it as a gift) I have another friend I need to make one for whom is moving into her own place...then on to bigger things....... I am happy to know I am amung great company in enjoying this dying art......... (if I need advice and help good to know where to turn lol....) I loved seeing the other wall hanging.....When I can give this gift to the new owner I will post a pic of it here....but in the meantime would LOVE to see other masterpeices...... |
Guys, I forget to check this forum....
Momma, I sent you an email/PM...about something else! There are so many ways you can learn to quilt...there are books, and DVD's...shoot I bet there is somewhere on the internet! And quilt shops and fabric stores have lessons! Go to a senior citizen center and have a little lady show you! I have been handquilting more lately and it really does make me feel good! And I've been working on two quilted stockings, which honest to goodness I should have completed by now, but my interest wanes faster now adays! Like a ADD kid sometimes!!! |

DW & I are a team in many of our hobbies—quilting being one. I design (EQ 7)—she quilts (constructs). We're currently exploring crazy quilts; working with velvet presents some new/different/unique challenges. So many ideas—so little time... Doc |
I don't know if anyone will see this or not, but I am making my first quilt, a rag quilt with flannel and denim. Here's a few pics to check out. This first one is showing the leopard flannel blocks, and denim blocks, as well as my second quilt project materials, the autism awareness puzzle fabric and royal blue will be for my son's rag quilt:
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...pse1bb9d31.jpg This is a digital preview i made in MS Paint of what I'm doing with the denim to make a design out of it all, the star pocketed jeans in the first photo will have the pocket's cut and put as the center blocks in both our quilts. http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps4b9e26cb.jpg Here is my test quilt panels I made into a cute tote bag with some leftover black denim I had on hand. Cool huh? http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps6b1042bc.jpg I'll be sure to share photos of both as I make them. :D |

Oh my goodness that sounds awesome!!! I don't have any way to embroider, but I really like seeing it done! I didn't wear any of these, except the dress with the bodice, it never stayed closed properly so it was destined to become quilt blocks....LOL!

Today I digitized some op-art (kind of like blackwork—but with the idea that the machine will do it if it can be fixed). Doc |
I don't know what those technical terms mean but I am guessing it has to do with the hand embroidery techniques. :D My quilt is going to have some embroidery on it, but nothing that I have done, it's flowers and vines from the dress I could never get to close properly. LOL!
|
They're just some of the older (and simpler) techniques suitable for handwork ('cuz that's all they had/could do). Some crossover with cross stitch.

Thank you Dr. Smith! I'll check those links out soon! I am so on edge waiting to hear about my machine....
|
I haven't posted in a long long time....I LOVE your blue jean bag! Very cute! I do want to see pictures when you make your quilt. I have been saving jeans with the intention of doing handbags and just haven't done them. Your bag is peaking my interest to actually DO something with all those jeans! :)

Anyway you measure it.... quilts are lots of work.
My friend hand sews all the squares, and borders. Then uses a machine for other tasks. She prefers to take the final piece to someone with a quilting arm...and have the quilting put in that way. She says in the shows, the hand stitches are part of the judging. Her stitches are truly amazing IMO. My right hand goes numb just looking at them! LOL |
