i have windows 98 on a computer and i want to do a duel boot with linux

how do i do it?

You have to partition the HD (hard drive) and don't do that until after you have saved to external media (external HD, zip or CD) important files and registry keys you want to keep.

To partition, if you don't know how to do it manually or on your own, I'd use an application, such as (but not necessarily) Partition Magic. (I don't want to give the appearance of endorsing it or any given product; I cited it as an example of an application that can provide you with the how-to info.)

P.S.: I forgot to ask do you have Linux ready to install? I have the Red Hat version, but haven't tried doing an install until I replace the drive on one of my 'puters. That way, as I see it, it's a clean slate and all the data I want retained would not risk being lost in the process. I know some have dual HDs - with a certain O/S or platform installed on one and, i.e., Linux on another. Because they were not tech. oriented and having dual drives created conflicts that had to be resolved, they ended up having to farm out their systems for the "fix."

I've not wanted to tinker with a system that works well. If it needs a revamp, I see it as: I'm out nothing even if I have to scratch everything a try again :).

I agree Partition Magic is the easiest way. I used to boot Redhat, 98, Win2k Server and XP all on the same hard drive with no problem. I partitioned the the drives the way I wanted to with PM and formatted the Redhat partition for ext2 from within PM.

Then loaded the redhat disc and OS. I remember I loaded boot magic (part of partition magic) but it wasn't required, because lilo boot loader worked fine. I'm sure new flavors of linux have better disc options for bootloading now. It's been awhile.

Dorry and I have offered ideas on how to create dual booting. Take or leave what we shared :). That's all we can do.

Cloudz, when I loaded redhat I followed recommendations for the boot loader on a separate partition. ie: I seem to recall it was like 500 mb or so. If you tell me which linux you want to load, I can look up the partition recommendations and see if all the partitioning, format and boot loader tools are available on the disc you want to use.

Are you going to download the iso and burn it, or are you buying a disc?

Just let me know which one you want to load and I'll try to help you. With 40 gigs you have plenty of room to set it up right the first time and avoid headaches.

cloudz -it looks like you can set it all up on your 40 gig partition from the Fedora installation CD. BE SURE TO BACK UP Win98.

Ok my question is-
my ubuntu & kubuntu aren't "seeing " my wireless internet {dsl} connection so I'm not able to go online with either one yet.

I am using both off of the DVD {live DVD} right now -but I do want to install both of them to my old spare hardrive- I do like kubuntu the best tho..

stil using XP for online and a few software pgms for now and future.
but want main online /internet to be thru the linux products soon.

I'll look at linux/kubuntu ect sites for help too.

if you have a laptop, searching ubuntu and the model of your laptop should produce better results from users that have written scripts to get it working.

My new laptop has linux support. Years ago my old desktop did not, so I bored pretty easy with the OS. I was more interested in the networking capability of linux and my card didn't support it.

I have 120gb HD on here, so I should really set it up for some OS fun. I'll give a shout to you, if I run into trouble loading it, since you dual boot fine.

I have the Dlink wireless card - looking at the info now.

making a partition with windows 98 boot disc is easy

when i put in fedora disc and boot up it gets into fda and fda * and stuff like mount point for the drive

cloudz- the kubuntu & ubuntu DVDs both asked me and gave an assorted ways to partition my drives- is was pretty easy. but I don't know how different the fedora version is...

now when my machine boots it goes to a screeen that gives a list of the 3 OS systems Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Win XP - and I pick the one I want.

and I plugged in a cable to my network card and the linux OS are online thru that for now- til my son has time to config the wireless.

Did you look at the fedora /linux website /forums for info on specific settings?

I tried to find Linux books at the libraries around here but they are all cleaned out, might have to buy one for myself.
