Got a dental appt today
Well, I finally broke down two weeks ago and after taking the full week to build up the courage, I called an made a dental appt for cleaning, x-rays, and an estimate.
You see, I'm a major dental phobic! I'v actually been experiencing sensitivity in my left upper side since Nov and it has gotten worse to the point today that it is majorly cold sensitive and my teeth are shifting so my bite is off. I do take care of my teeth but I drink coffee and smoke so they are not white or any shade there of. I know this guy is going to look in my mouth and go, "Holy s**t! How have you gone this long without seeing a dentist?" I won't even tell you the last time I saw a dentist but surfice it to say NO IN THIS CENTURY! I'm off now. I have to get there early so I can build up the confidence to suck it up and walk in the front door by my appt time. Wish me luck. |
Good luck, I'm sure it will go better than you think it will. :Good-Luck:
You don't want to know how long it's been for me. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2.../12baghead.gif |
I'm with you, Craig. I'm totally dental phobic and it's been way too long for me, too. I've been trying for a year (yes a year) to pick up the phone and do what you did. Now that I know the steroids have done a number on my bones, I assume my teeth aren't that happy, either. It's time, I know. I just have to get the courage. I wonder if they can rx anti anxiety pills for this???

Good luck Craig! I'm probably one of the few who is not Dental phobic. I used to work for a dentist yrs ago, so got used to what goes on in the chair.
I go every 6 months and even then, I had a $350 filling replacement last month. One stinkin filling!!!! Hwy robbery, but thank goodness ins picked up 75% of it. No passing out Craig!!! |
Good Luck!
I totally understand. If I need major work done, my dentist makes an appointment to do it and gives me a prescription for valium. LOL. Not scared of them at all, am I? :D |
My Brother went about 35 years not seening a dentist! Not since he chipped a tooth and had a 'temporary' put in...also a tooth pulled. Finally, last year he went in and then said 'gee, don't know what took so long, it wasn't that bad!". I hope this happens for you too :)
His teeth look great now!! |
Of course you are getting these messages after the fact, but believe me you aren't the only one he'll see this week like that! I have a friend who did the same thing you did....it turned out ok! Course the dentist wanted to do some extra work, that didn't fly!

I'm back from the dentist. Ironically I had all green lights on the way there. Too bad.
I expected him to look in my mouth and say, "You need to contact the Extreme Makeover people!" Instead, after having a bunch of x-rays and a good cleaning with a (new to me) instrument that vibrates and rinses while cleaning your teeth rather than the old pick and scrape method I'm used to. The dentist came in and checked everything out and said, "Well, no cavities and your teeth are in great shape." I had to make sure he was talking to ME. I went ahead and scheduled another cleaning for August. I have plenty of time to build up that courage for the next appt. Glad THAT'S over with! |
That's GREAT Craig! http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2.../goodvibes.gif

"Look, Ma, no Cavities!!!!" :D
Congrats, Craig. |
I finally got up the courage to find me a new dentist last december.
I hadnt seen a dentist since 2003. The dentist that I'd been seeing since childhood had a hissy fit one day. He was going to fix a bad filling, and I have really atypical reactions to novocaine (it takes forever to work, and doesnt last very long for me) He kept wanting to start drilling before it had kicked in, and got ****** when I told him I wasnt numb yet and to wait a few minutes. He got mad, tossed the drill, and the little mirror thing across the room into the wall, started cussing and told me to reschedule the %$#&ing appointment and come back. I looked at the dental tech, she looked at me, and I said %$#& that! and said that I'd never be coming back to that office as a patient. I actually got my mom to switch dentists last month to my new dentist. The old dentist ignored my mom when she said she had something wrong with one of her teeth. He took xrays, said there wasnt anything wrong and sent her home. I took her to my new dentist and they found a raging infection in her tooth. She had to have a root canal. I need to get a root canal or two done, just need to make the appointment for that. (big dentalphone here too!) My new dentist said she's going to take all my amalgams out since they're old, cracked and have "high mercury content" according to her. The amalgams are actually making my teeth split, so they do need to be replaced soon. I just have so many metal fillings in my teeth, that it's going to be a big job...and she wants to do it all in one day so that she can get the amalgam out all at once and not subject me to the possibility of mercury exposure for very long. After all that work is done, I'm going to get some porcelain veneers put on because I was born with soft teeth and all the pretty white stuff has either been scraped off by an overeager dentist or it just wore off on it's own. My teeth are icky looking. I would like to have the pretty white teeth at least once in my life. Oh, and I'll probably get my lower front teeth straightened with Invisalign (kind of like clear braces) The rest of my teeth are perfectly straight (the one good thing about my teeth) I just have to get up to courage to sit thru all of that dental work. I hate dentists, and it's all because my very first dentist was a quack. I can remember that putz tying me down to the dentist chair to work on me. (parents never went into the room with me) He also put metal bite guards in my mouth to keep my mouth open. I dont remember being a squirmy, biting child back then. I get the feeling he did that to all four year olds. I'm pretty sure that dentist is the reason that I'm terrified of going to the dentist. |
CRAIG I am so happy that all went well for you. I felt the same as you.
didn't go to the dentist is years, until I had no choice the pain made me go. 1 root canal and crown later I was shocked at the modern equip. that they have today. So now I go every six months for a cleaning and check-up. Jappy |
craig,
glad the appt went so well, but what was the problem with your tooth? |
Wow Craig, that's great news! :D

All that worry about a big cavity or even a cracked tooth and requiring a crown all for nothing. As usual, the fear outweighed the reality. |
