Grays Anatomy - TOS on TV

Does anyone here watch the TV show Grays Anatomy?

If you watch it, what do you think about how the show is handling the injury that Dr. Preston Burke suffered to his Brachial Plexus?

For those who don't watch, Dr. Burke is a surgeon, a top surgeon in his field (he's a cardio-thoracic surgeon I think), so he needs his hands/arms to work properly to be able to return to surgery. The injury to the brachial plexus was caused by complications from a gunshot wound and the surgery to repair the gunshot wound.

Personally, I loved the mini-fight that Dr Burke had with Dr. Yang about the recovery time and necessary PT after surgery... how he said progress is measured in months and years not weeks and days... he also said something about how success is measured (I forget exactly what he said but it was good).

So what do you all think? The injury, the surgery, the complications, the physical therapy, the tremor he currently has, etc...

Has anyone else sat there silently cheering at the TV because you realize that a friend or family member is watching the show and they might finally "get it" by watchng Dr Burke go through something similar to what you went through???

I would love to hear what everyone else thinks.... and if you haven't watched the show you might want to start watching :)

I didn't see it! Rats

There's a website for injuries like this - TBPI's. Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries. Most are from motocycle accidents, also gunshots. As long as the nerve root is still attached to the spine, a lot of these have (but not all) have good outcomes, because they do surgery immediately if there is an open wound, instead of waiting months or years like we have to do. And if part of the nerve is badly damaged they will often replace it with a nerve graft.

There are also OBPI, Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Injuries, these are the newborns that Drs pull from the mother's womb by the shoulder, sometimes breaking the collarbone. These repair surgeries aren't always as successful, they have to wait months for the baby to be big enough to go under general anesthesia - since it's not life-threatening. And sometimes the nerve roots are abrupted. Even skin grafts aren't always successful because of the amount of time that has passed. The baby's arm sometimes never works, just hangs at his/her side, or has clawed fingers - so very sad :(

Dr Nath does both types of surgery, but more children than adults I think.

Now what's that web address? www.ubpi.org I think!
United Brachial Plexus Injury Organization - is that right??
be sure and tell me if that's not right, ok? :D

IT'S WRONG :O www.ubpn.org N, for Network, silly!

It's as if because they say we should hop and and be normal now, that we should be!!All on their time table!!
I thought the writers did excellent with this topic!!!
I cant wait each week for this show to come on..:D

That's one of the things I love about it all -- that Dr Yang is the doubter, the pusher, the disbeliever, the one who says the stuff we have all heard from our own family and friends.... and dr burke does what most of us do, hides the real pain and the real problems and puts on the smile most of the time and then occasionally his facade cracks and then he blurts out a whole bunch of truth and the truth shocks dr yang so much she finally shuts up.

It's so similar to the way things happen in real life.

I just love the show and feel they indeed present the medical conditions/treatments with crediibility!

HOWEVER

my painfree, non-TOS family and friends also watch House. They commented that Dr. Burke should be sent to Dr. House and his trio of super-hero doctors who would find a quick, effective treatment even if they had to break into Burke's house to find a hidden cause for the lingering malady. LOL

But...back to Gray's Anatomy....what do you think Dennie's occupation could have been that enabled him to have an inheritance check of 8 million bucks sent to izzie???AND

Who is you favorite character?? Mine is Izzie.

(Thanks for helping take my mind of my TOS)

A "G's A" fan...Carly

Hi there Carly. Hmmmm favorite character????:p Yes, I love the show coming from a medical family.

I started watching G/A last year when a friend and then my son called to tell me that my double was on TV. Chandra Wilson...:D Apparently, I act and sound just like her.....Oh well...only difference she is getting paid and I'm not..:) Yes, she is by far my favorite. She runs a tight ship. :)

gibbrn 10-18-2006 06:56 PM

oh yeah baby...hmmmm MC Dreamy....not

I LOVE Grey's Anatomy......House and ER of course but can't watch any of them without my box of tissues....ok I am a cancer and do tend to be emotional can I blame the zanaflex??? or the diazepam....??? perhaps the lyrica, I take enough of it!!!!

Prefer House to mc dreamy but grey's is so goooood too and as a nurse I can see they are doing a good job to keep things real .....as we can all see with Burke's injury!!!

k that's my 2 cents.......:p

HI LISA! :)

Thought you might be interested in today's Rachael Ray show on WOLF TV

Actress Chandra Wilson (``Grey's Anatomy'') prepares a soul-food menu; Rachael helps to prepare a couple's 50th-anniversary party.

Hope you and your family are well...I sure do miss our days in the chat room! Laugh...what great therapy that was!

So sad that JL closed down that chat room. That chat room was better than Apple Pie.:p

I just got home from giving a pint of blood for more heart tests:( and on to the Handicap sticker place and just getting home to read your post. I just turned on Rachel Ray's show today. ...THANKS so much for telling me about Chandra. She is orginally from Houston.

Carly, you are in my prayer wheel that you will see some relief soon. You are tooo nice.

Yes, family is doing fine. Hubby is travelling more but what the heck. Lil one is in kindergarten on paper but in reality 'fifth grade' ;)

mcsteamy gets my vote :D

nidia74 10-19-2006 07:57 PM

love mcdreamy...mcsteamy is not too shabby either

i love, love grey's anatomy and also have the seasons dvds and soundtracks.
crazy thing is, i actually worked with izzie on a disney movie..."wish upon a star"...about ten years ago. it was right after she did "my father the hero".

i really like how burke has had to more realistically battle his symptoms. his comments to christina last week really hit home...
the only problem i see with anyone identifying brachial plexus and correlating it to our lives is remembering the name of the body area that is affecting us...as in i thought you have something wrong with your thoracic outlet? but hopefully will give someone some insight and help them to "get" it.
nidia

gibbrn 10-19-2006 11:17 PM

ok after tonights episope......

Mc Steamy not nice at all......
Mc Dreamy needs kick to backside
thank God Burke stood up for himself with Izzy
I think I may like George the best......not for looks.....he's all round the best....looks as we all know last a few months unless with a really good package (not the one you are all thinking of.....lol) I mean the whole thing.....nice and good looking...lol

hmmmm George..poor guy needs some tlc anyhoooooo....

Curious 10-19-2006 11:25 PM

am i supposed to turn the sound on? :p i was enjoying the eye candy. :D

Jomar 10-19-2006 11:50 PM

Oh you guys!
I feel so out of the loop on this - I had to look up the show online to see who you are talking about. LOL

I guess we are usually watching PBS or CSI or ?? at that time.

HopeLivesHere 10-20-2006 03:23 PM

Me too!

I'm with you Jo.
First time I watched last night, and I have to say I was a little shocked.
I'm no prude, but somebody needed money badly to play that part!

Sorry, I missed it if Burke said anything about the brachial plexus.
Can't wait to see it again next week.

This is like the show House, where the doctor has RSD.

I hope shows like this continue to get the word out there.
Hope

Curious 10-20-2006 03:52 PM

i'm a csi freak. :D i tape grey's and watch during insomnia hours.

~KELLWANTSANSWERS~ 10-20-2006 06:09 PM

Sittin here trying to think of who's my favorite on the show..heehee
I love em all sooo much!!!!
I dont miss an episode!!!!
If i havta pick.I guess it would beeeee Izzy.
They sure have given her a big part these last few episodes.
Yeah i was wondering what in the world Denny did for a living to get that much money too?LOL
Thought maybe i missed something....
Something will happen to that big ole check..You mark my words..LOL

LisaL-TOS 10-20-2006 07:22 PM

~more OT~

I think Izzie will give the money to the hospital and have a wing named for Denny and Heart Transplants. Just my quess. I rarely watch TV in the evenings but cannot miss G/A or Dancing with the Stars. I love Emmit and Mario. I loved "raymond" and was so sad when that left.

Didn't the news today say that George came out of the closet or do I now need a hearing aid!~!:p

Gromlily 10-21-2006 03:15 PM

Haa!

This has been a fun thread to read through!! Gibbrn and Curious... you two are wayy too funny!!

And I had to laugh about the idea of sending Burke over to the" House " Dr.'s cuz that's my favorite show. Do you suppose that says something about our age differences here on the forum??

Like Hope, I turned in to Gray's for the first time after seeing the thread's post and I obviously need to see more episodes to get the full picture. I didn't see Burk do anything that looked like he had TOS, no real "body language"; for example, he was walking in a hall way with his arms crossed behind his back talking to another DR. I couldn't see that being realistic. I can't get my hands behind my back like that, much less walk that way, can you guys?? Or I saw him leaning on his elbows... I can't do that.

Obviously, one episode isn't going to tell the whole story, and I will keep watching because he did talk about his B.P. injury, so I am intrigued!!

Plus, you guys are having wayyyy to much fun in this thread and I don't want to miss out !! :D

G~ :)

Jomar 10-21-2006 11:57 PM

I can do those moves- I use the behind the back for a pec stretch.

Is he {burke} on pain meds??
maybe he has functional TOS/BP inj??

i still haven't caught the show.

Wittesea 10-22-2006 12:07 AM

I think Burke had his hands behind his back to hide the tremor he has in the injured arm.

As for Denny's money - I think I remember that in the episode where he was first introduced that there was something about him being a "second generation rich white guy" - in other words, the money is family money and Denny had a trust fund (which would also explain why his father handed Izzy the check instead of a lawyer).

gibbrn 10-23-2006 12:54 PM

oh dear

Is it thursday yet????????????????????????????/

dawn3063 10-23-2006 02:04 PM

Yep, It's still on Thursdays..:D It follows Ugly Betty...

JAMY 10-23-2006 02:33 PM

Hummmm - never really got into Gray's Anatomy...more an ER and House girl myself...maybe I outta tune in some time

gibbrn 10-23-2006 11:54 PM

ok you better watch

hey Jamy,
you NEED to watch to get into the show it is soooooooooooo good never mind mc steamy or mc dreamy.......need mc sleazy.....lol but show is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth watching as good as er maybe even better when you get into it. very character driven...medical good but not the main part of the story...people are.....so is good that way...we can all learn a lesson from Grey's Anatomy.....and for all you non medical people out there, there is a textbook written by grey......hence the name is a pun if you get tht grey wrote the book on anatomy.....or rather drew the pics....!!!!

nidia

nidia,
guess the doc is using the correct terminology for the syndrome...
I Had Doc Togut correct me early on that it is correct doctor talk, Brachial Plexus entrapment..the TOS is what we get labled I guess. The brachial bundle nerves C5/6/7/8 & t/1 are the bundle, they travel across the traps to the arm and brach off. They lay behind the collar bone and in front of the first rib in a tiny space they travel along with the vascular bundle.
THUS the thoracic "inlet". Out to the arm they become the radial, ulnar, and medial nerve.

Doc T says that TOS is the common term, not the proper term.
When he wrote the diagx , I keptthe tablet paper he wrote it on, "Brachial Plexus Entrapment" so sticks with me.

The Brachial bundle- branch from the cervical spine all the way to the finger tips about three feet long. Anywhere a "hinge" like the shoulder-elbow-wriste can bend and compress can develope symptoms. That is why so often there is DeQuirvians (sp), carpal tunnel, or ulnar tunnel, even bursitis as diagx...
Makes one want to slam their upper arm in a mamography machine full force and say is that bursitis?

Bursitis is local to that bursi area...does not travel, if they lift your arm and the pain travels, flares, numbs, pins, etc...it is TOS not bursitis.
Been to some real jerks with De and some really sympathetic....

(Not that most of us do not know this, I just put all this for any new folks that may find this post some day in a search)

But what ever term we use, it sucks....how about going to an ER in a flare and have them go oh you have bursitis! In a major flare. LOL! At least when my Ortho saw De, he took an xray, saw the bursitis, was shocked as he thought it was the TOS, but gave a shot in the bursi and IT DID calm down.

I am rattling, time for bed, lack of sleep during vacation and off to a confernce tomorrow to Saturday.
Di
