What did you learn from post card exchange?

I really have enjoyed swapping post cards with board peoples, but to make it even more interesting I've made sure that I've "looked up" each and every place that I've had a post card from. I've tried to make sure that I've learnt a little off the Internet about every state I received a card from.

Here are a few things that I have learnt....in "no particular order".......

Houston's climate is classified as humid subtropical, and is recognized worldwide for its energy industry — particularly oil and natural gasses . NASA's Lyndon B Johnson's Space centre is also located here.

This next part astounded me....over 90 languages are spoken in the city and Houston has among the youngest populations in the nation.....Wow!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Kentucky is an inland state and is located in the East Central part of the USA. Climate is humid sub-tropical, and is Abraham lincoln's birth place.
Apparently it has the world's longest cave system (I love caves....), and the highest per capita number of deer and turkey in the US, It's best known for it's thoroughbred horses and the Kentucky Derby!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~

Washington State is said to have the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the USA, and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River. Washington is a leading lumber producer and is rich in Douglas fir, hemlock, ponderosa and white pine, spruce, larch, and cedar. The state holds first place in apples, lentils, dry edible peas, hops, pears, red raspberries, spearmint oil, and sweet cherries, and ranks high in apricots, asparagus, grapes, peppermint oil, and potatoes. Other manufacturing industries in Washington include aircraft and missiles, shipbuilding and other transportation equipment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have posted and received cards to and from all over the USA, so these 3 states are only 3 of many that I've looked up.
What have you learned about other places that you didn't know before, because of the post card exchange ....? I don't want me to be the only contributer....so come on!
Wow Your waaayyyy more ambitious then me I am afraid.............
I did good to keep them all together and put them in a scrap book.....I have looked at them many times whime I am still making mine.....
I have some ready to mail out but I dont want anyone to get thiers before everyone else so I have to wait until I get them ALL ready.............
mine are home made......(and I am kinda slow)
CayoKay 02-19-2008 10:24 AM
I learned that Boston looks lovely from the air, and Utah has some gorgeous mountains, and incredible rock formations.
and that's there's a fabulous Mardi Gras in Shreveport...
and that Marblehead Lighthouse is the OLDEST lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes.
:D
now THAT's ambition!
luckily, I live near the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, and near many old Maya ruins, caves, waterfalls, etc.
and among some of the coolest critters in the world (except for the ol' wombats, Tasmanian Devils, koalas, kangaroos, and wallabys of you-know-who)
we have Agoutis, Jaguarundis, Coatimundis, Ocelots, Jaguars, Toucans, Iguanas, Jesus Lizards, Scarlet Macaws, Tapirs, geckos, Harpy Eagles, Parrots, and so many more.
so, it's easy to find postcards here... plus, if I tried to MAKE 'em, they'd never get done.
:D
AZjanie 02-19-2008 10:32 AM
I learned we have a lot of really fun people here....no wait; I already KNEW that!
I will keep looking at them again and again because they are all hugs and smiles across the miles!
:grouphug:
Vonn07 02-19-2008 10:43 AM
I learned ....
that we don't have to stop!! :)
FinLady 02-19-2008 10:50 AM
I've learned how hard it is to find postcards in my neck of the woods, LOL :D
Still on the hunt. :D
Hey that's cool! I didn't know that (about the languages) I should have guessed though...it's hard to find someone who speaks English around here sometimes! lol
I learned that no matter how many times I say I need to sit down and write out postcards I just can't seem to do it. I'm such a procrastinator! I promise to have the rest mailed out soon! :o I also learned how I can be so much like a kid when I go to the mailbox and find something just for me!
I think we need to keep this going!
Koala,
I see we sent you a person in the mail; Our President! I do hope he behaved himself and didn't act like a dork!!! I saw him on the news last night trying to dance a tribal dance....of which he looked stiff and like a real duffus :rolleyes:
I was happy to hear he brought nets for the children tho! Do you use one too? Malaria sounds like it is rampant there :(
sassy 02-19-2008 02:19 PM
I learned that people are so nice and that postcards don't mail themselves!
So, I need to get busy and get three mailed out!
CayoKay, thanks I got yours this weekend! Beautiful birds, didn't know they were on the endangered list. (Scarlet Macaw)
I'm afraid your president's visit didn't make our local news so I didn't even know he was here.:icon_redface:
Malaria in Australia? No GJ. There's no malaria in Australia, but I you can still find it in Papua & New Guinea........further north of us.
I don't know what nets you mean . If you mean the ones that enclose a bed to keep the bugs out, we don't use (or need) those either. I think they may be necessary in areas where the malaria carrying mosquito is rife though.
We tend to have more problems with Ross River Virus and such, that the mossie also carries.
KajunButterfly 02-19-2008 04:46 PM
I learned that I still have some postcards to mail out..YIKES...got sidetracked with the levelgame!
karousel 02-19-2008 07:46 PM
I learned that I like to get an exciting postcard in the mail but that it's more fun to send them!!
Koala77 02-19-2008 08:10 PM
Just so you know I didn't just check out 3 of the states..................
Indiana is a state in the north central mid west, USA, and is one of the leading industrial and agricultural states in the Union.
Most of Indiana has a humid continental climate, with cool winters and long, warm summers. The extreme southern part of the state is within the humid subtropical climate zone and has somewhat warmer temperatures and receives more precipitation.
There are about 1,000 small natural lakes in Indiana, chiefly in the northern part of the state, the largest being Lake Wawasee.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~

Florida has the longest marine coastline of all the states after Alaska. It's climate has been called the state’s most valuable natural resource. Most of the state has a humid subtropical type of climate, but the southern tip of the peninsula has a more tropical climate. The climate attracts millions of tourists and permanent residents who seek sunshine and warmth all year, but particularly in winter. It is also important to growers of crops that are easily damaged by frost, such as citrus fruit and sugarcane.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~
Louisiana is a state in the southern United States, on the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River. It's richly endowed with minerals, oil, natural gas, sulfur, and salt. In addition to mining, the state has flourishing agricultural, lumbering, and fishing industries. Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana. New Orleans is the largest city.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~

There you go, and although I have more information, I'll not burden you with any more. I have had heaps of fun learning about the different places every one lives in though, but I have to agree with those who said just finding mail in their mail box that wasn't junk or a bill has been a big plus! :D

I've also had such a lot of pleasure sending cards! I'm one of those people who get most their happiness out of being the "giver", so if any one hasn't sent me their address yet, I only have 10 cards left........................:)

I've also learned there are a lot of beautiful people on this site, not that I wasn't already suspecting this. I've also made another lovely friend, and that is always a wonderful bonus.

thecatsmeow 02-19-2008 10:46 PM

I have learned that if you dare to reach out you can make a bunch of strangers with something in common become a bunch of friends which makes this even more special! :)

I've learned that I actually care about these people as much as any family member or 'in-person' friend.

So we've never met in person...
So what?

We still all know each other.

Here endeth the lesson.

I also spent time researching the places I didn't know much about. I wasn't sure exactly where Belize was or much about it. Now I know! And I know that it makes me very sad that due to man's fear of what he doesn't understand or know how to deal with with, we have animals who are extinct such as the Tasmanian Tiger. I learned that I don't want to stop sending and receiving cards because it brings a smile to my face when I find one that makes me think of someone on the board and it puts a smile on my face when I open the mailbox and pull one out that someone has sent to me when I'm not expecting it. This was a great thing to start and certainly doesn't have to end!!

I know my postcards are coming from Indiana, but I was actually born and raised in Tennessee, which is where I consider home. There are quite a few caves there too. Both of my children (grown now-28 and 29) lead a Scouting Venturing Crew who go caving a lot! This is a pic of them on one of their adventures!!

tkrik 02-21-2008 09:50 AM

I learned that . . .

I have a lot in common with many board buddies - procrastination. LOL.

I really need to rearrange my small apartment to accommodate my drafting table as my kitchen table, which is small, is not working and each evening I have to clean it all up only to pull everything out the next day.

Absolutely under no circumstances should I attempt to make the cards when my hand tremors are acting up as well as when I'm cogging. I get far too frustrated and can't be creative.

I need new Xacto blades and I can't cut in a straight line so I also need a T-square.

There are many go getters here as they got right on their postcards.

I have learned about other places in the country and that has been fun.

Twinkletoes 06-23-2008 04:02 PM

Hey, how come I just now discovered this thread??? :confused:

Oh yeah, Koala began it while I was on the cruise ship breaking my ankle, Lol!!!

This was fun to read, Anne. Thanks! :):):)

I've learned that good friends are not just those you can see and touch. They are those who live thousands of miles away and can still touch your heart and make you feel like you're special. :)
