another round.........

Okay so I went to the dr today and she put me on a trial run of a new med.
Its called ......
Meloxicam....or mobic........
I have never even heard of it.......any clues on how it works anyone?

It is an anti-inflammatory drug.....I hate using something when I have never heard of it or no clue what it does for folks.
It is for me to use in place of so much other otc stuff I use for pain.

I have that now its a once a day....if it works it has to be better then all the advil/tylonol/ibpu/excederin I use daily......

Wish me luck.........

also had elevated liver enzymes.....and sweeling in the joints in several places.....so..........
I am on another round of the stupid roids........
Hate um Hate um......

I am due to have some company next week and I will spend the whole time shoving munchies in my mouth........
Have to think of things to do away from home and from the pantry and fridge lol.......

But hopefully I will feel better and be rid of this dang pain and headaches I have everyday.........

Wish me luck and maybe mention my name in a prayer would yas?
Thanks,
(the munchie queen)
Kay

Hi Kay

I take Mobic. My understanding is its a Cox inhibitor like cellebrex so its helps with pain and more importantly inflammation

What else can I tell you?

Not sure if you can use this or not but milk thistle helps with liver cleansing.

Jules A 02-22-2008 07:27 PM

I've used it for several years in my dogs and more recently in cats also as an anti-imflammatory/pain reliever. We do routine blood work and have not had any abnormal labs for those on it. I hope it helps you feel better. Jules

SallyC 02-22-2008 07:55 PM

I've never heard of it either, Kay, but I will be very happy if it works for you. Good thoughts and vibes coming your way..

DAY1 02-22-2008 08:05 PM

I was afraid you were headed towards the roids. Hopefully it will make you feel better.

As for mobic. I've heard of it. Just don't know anything about it.

Wish I could help more, but alas, I cannot.

Feel better sweetie.

braingonebad 02-22-2008 08:47 PM

I tried mobic in there somewhere ... between bextra and lexapro, I think. There were so many. I am to meds as Emelda Marcos was to shoes.

:p

It didn't do me any good but didn't hurt either. it was about like taking a bunch of Tylenol. I think I still have 5 or 6 of em in the pill trunk.

yeahbut 02-22-2008 08:54 PM

I was also wondering if they were going to give you another round of roids... sorry to hear that. You want me to send you some almond joys? oreos?

DAY1 02-22-2008 10:33 PM

Look at it this way. You can eat an entire batch of brownies and blame it on the roids.

Man, now I'm hungry and I started my diet today:(

OH MAN!! A BROWNIE sounds sooooooooooooooo good right now.

Feel better girlfriend:hug:

Sorry to hear that you're back on the 'roids, and yes I think we all hate those "muchies" that go with them.

As for Mobic....... It's widely used in Australia and is a good anti-inflammatory & pain reliever used mostly here for arthritic pain. So far I haven't heard of any of those nasty side effects, as exhibited with other drugs like Voltaren & Celebrex.

Get well soon FFM.

Victorya 02-23-2008 12:15 AM

Sorry you're in a flair...I'm in one, too, so I can sympathize.

As for the mobic...my friend takes is daily for her back. She has a ... uh ... what do you call it when the thing between the vertebrae squishes out?

O.K....that sounds like a second grader just asked that question doesn't it?

It's on the tip of my tongue but I can't come up with it.... anyway, she might have to have the vertebrea fused together and she has a lot of pain and swelling so she takes mobic for pain.

Apparently, it works, but not nearly as good as...O.K., now I can't remember what it doesn't work as well as. There was a REALLY good drug, but it was taken off the market.

OOOH-OOOOH...I just remembered, the really good drug was celebrex...I think!

tkrik 02-23-2008 11:05 AM

FFM - Sorry about the flare. I hope you start feeling better soon.

I am not much help on the med. I do not have any experiences to share with you. Sorry.

As for the munchies, well, I never experienced that with the 'roids. The 'roids upset my stomach too much to eat. Not to mention they increase my fatigue and I end up like a blob on the couch and it is far too much work to get up and get something to eat. Therefore, DDs make me all sorts of smoothies - fruit ones, veggie ones, etc. so that I am at least taking in something. If I know that I will be going on IVSM, we will make them ahead of time so that I can just go to the freezer pull one out, let it thaw, and just drink that.

Let us know how you are doing.

Debbie D 02-23-2008 11:50 AM

FFM-
Sorry you're feeling poorly, my dear:hug:

I've been on Mobic (Meloxicam is the generic) for a couple of years-was put on it when Vioxx was pulled.
I have arthritis and degenerative joint disease in my back, knees, elbows and my left sacroiliac joint, which is the most painful of all the joints. OTC antiinflammatories weren't working anymore.
Mobic works great on the pain. I notice right away when I don't take it--my SI joint gets almost unbearable.
Try it for a while and see if it decreases the pain.

MSCherokee 02-23-2008 12:25 PM

FFM,

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well and doing another round of 'roids. :( I've not heard of Mobic myself but I sure hope it gives you some pain relief quick.

MSacorn 02-23-2008 11:27 PM

Hey Kay
Sad to hear you are on the steroids. They are nasty stuff. I hope they make you feel better soon.

Good Luck with the Mobic. I've sent healing thoughts and prayers your way.

Koala77 02-23-2008 11:48 PM

Hugs . :grouphug: . Victorya as well. Hope you feel better soon as well.

tante 02-24-2008 09:17 AM

I hope Mobic works for you, it apparently does for some people.
It was prescribed for me when Vioxx was pulled off the market and it (Mobic) did nothing for me.

I know I'm a "stranger" but can I send :hug:s too?
I'm sorry you're not doing too well.

kebsa 02-24-2008 09:35 AM

Sorry to hear you are having a flare at the moment, i too can sympathise as i have had multiple flares since october and have had 12 or 13 admissions to hospital ( i have been in more than i have been at home!) and 5 courses of IV steroids and some bursts of oral steroids- i will be so glad when it stops

As for the mobic, as the others have said, it has been around for quite a while, it is a cox inhibitor and from what i have witnessed in my days on the wards, it is generally well tolerated

I really hope you start to feel a bit better soon!

DM 02-24-2008 01:31 PM

Let us know how the Mobic works, will ya Kay? I am very interested as am having the worst back pain right now. The Tramadol is like taking a baby aspirin. It's just not cutting it.

Is Mobic considered a narcotic? What drug classification is it under?

Sorry for all the ???'s, I'm just in need of something to settle this back down. I'm having an MRI next wk.... Hope you feel better..

No it's not a narcotic DM. It's an anti-inflammatory like Ibrufen.

Bannet 02-25-2008 08:09 AM

Hi Kay. Sorry you are not feeling well:hug: Hopefully the roids will kick in fast and the swelling will go down.

Like other people have already said, Mobic is a anti-inflammatory. Everyone is different though.

It may help you where with others it doesn't. Let us know how its working for you.

Hope you are better by the time company comes.

babs954 02-25-2008 01:38 PM

Kay,
Sorry you are not feeling well. You wouldn't by any chance be on Rebif would you?
I just had a very similar appt. with my PCP. The swollen joints are so painful........some joints are very swollen, like painful lumps everywhere!!
I can't help but think the injections are the cause. I have been on Rebif for almost five years and I really think it is time for a change. In all this time I have only had one really bad relapse, however I have had some progression and now some disability.
My liver enzymes are okay (this time), however my thyroid is acting up and it never has before. I am having bloodwork repeated this week and will making my decision about treatment in the next couple weeks.
Hope you feel better soon and enjoy your company ........Barb

Sorry to hear you still are feeling so puny! I hope something helps you out of this flare!

Take care, rest, and pamper yourself.

lady_express_44 02-27-2008 01:24 PM

This is from wikopedia, which isn't always 100% accurate but I like the simplicity of the information:

"Meloxicam is an NSAID and belongs to the class of drugs called enolic acid group, structurally related to piroxicam. Meloxicam significantly decreased symptoms of pain, function, and stiffness in patients, with a low incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. In models, it exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities. Its mechanism of action may be related to prostaglandin synthetase (cyclooxygenase) (COX) inhibition.

Meloxicam has been shown, especially at its low therapeutic dose, to selectively inhibit COX-2 over COX-1.

A primary advantage of the Oxicam family of drugs is their long half-life which permits once-day dosing.

Adverse effects
Meloxicam use can result in gastrointestinal toxicity and bleeding, tinnitus, headache, rash, very dark or black stool (sign of intestinal bleeding). The risk of adverse side effects is lower than with piroxicam, diclofenac, or naproxen. Although meloxicam does inhibit thromboxane A, it does not appear to do so at levels that would interfere with platelet function.

In rare situations, it could cause serious liver disease. If there is a sensation of fatigue and/or liver pain, intake must be ceased."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meloxicam

When my spinal lesions are acting up, all I use is Naproxen (which is a similar drug). I personally do feel it helps with the inflammation that occurs with this disease, and it also helps take the "edge" off the pain if used regularly. I take 1500 mg the first day, and then 1000 mg a day (usually for a few weeks), when necessary.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Cherie
