PTttttttt

:)

Started PT today. I have decided I need a job like that now. Although I will no longer get paid to make people scream, I can make them laugh hysterically when I show them just how they get there leg up THERE  and their foot over THERE :icon_eek: and bend like THIS :yikes:

I tell you, if I make it through this, someone better put me up for patient of the year. Did I say they get paid for this?

It BETTER work...:plain:

lburdockfriend 02-22-2008 11:29 PM

All I can say...

Riverwild is this:

GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK and please leave me out of it should they ask if ya know of anyelse who might want ta join ya. lol!!

Snoopy 02-22-2008 11:43 PM

Hope PT helps you :)

I had PT after I broke my ankle and could finally put weight on it. The PT wanted me on a balance board - I told her when she found something for me to hold onto THEN I would get on that board :p:rolleyes:

I had her trained pretty good - she wouldn't ask me to do something until I had something to hold onto :D

I was told by the PT my walking/ankle was as good as it was going to get

WTH - I don't think so! I went home ready to prove she was wrong. It took me awhile but I proved her wrong - Have I ever mentioned I'm a little bit stubborn :D

Back to work, RW - lift that leg, move that foot and bend.....

Koala77 02-23-2008 01:35 AM

I wish you well RW.

hey River, they had me doing strengthening stuff with giant rubber balls.

giggle city, 'cause I kept fallin' OFF!

good thing I bounce a bit, eh?

:D

HSPCraig 02-23-2008 12:49 PM

I'm convince "PT" stands for "Personal Torture."

The only thing lacking in their repertuar is waterboarding and bamboo up your fingernails. Of course, that may be coming in the near future. You never can tell with those people.

braingonebad 02-23-2008 05:13 PM

Maybe I'm a massochist. I enjoyed it. Not the bamboo, but the rest of it.

:p

Mmmm... electro stim! :D

Sorry RW. Mine must have been a LOT nicer than yours is.

Riverwild 02-23-2008 09:13 PM

Thanks for all the encouraging comments, folks! :)

I think the lady pegged me as an overacheiver or something. She was showing me this :Thats-Funneh: put my foot on the back of the chair behind me and "don't kneel on your kneecap" and sttttretch that leg by leaning back towards the heel of the foot on the back of the chair!!

I spazzed up so hard I couldn't even scream, just an open mouthed "Silent Scream" thing..LOL. The only good thing was the table beside me that I fell on, trying to unbend before I went through the ceiling. Repeat that about twenty times with different muscles and then tell me to try to do all of those exercises in sets of three, twice a day until next week. :yikes:

Funny Lady!

She puts me on the bike to do all over exercise of my legs. When I told her I couldn't feel resistance at the 5.0 setting on that bike, she cranked it up to 10.0. It was all uphill from there for TEN MINUTES! I jello'd off the seat and held on all the way to where my coat was hanging. It took me twenty minutes to be able to drive away.

I can already tell we are going to have fun. I am willing to give this the best I can to see just how far one can come back with the help of Tysabri. I want to be working back at my old job by spring!!!!

It better work. It already hurts.

SallyC 02-23-2008 09:46 PM

Sheesh, Are you sure you aren't overdoing it a bit? I don't want you to hurt yourself.

:hug::hug::hug:

the Bird 02-23-2008 10:51 PM

Your PT does know about MS right?

If so, have FUN!!!

I absolutely LOVE PT!!!

greta 02-25-2008 10:58 AM

I worked as an aide in a PT clinic and we were always extra careful with MS patients not to challenge them too much and to back off. No pain no gain does not apply to PT. The best way to make steps forward is to take little baby ones (that applies for everyone, not just those with MS). If your PT is more like Nurse Ratchet, it's probably time to find a new one.

Remember, there's no reason you can't change the resistance, lower the weight, or just stop the exercise. It won't/can't do you any good if it's out of your league.

DM 02-25-2008 11:22 AM

Poor lil RW! *patting RW's HAID*

Ya want me to come and wrap you up in bubble wrap?

take care woman!!!! PT is to get you better, not make you feel like your'e in a boxing ring!!! :D

Thats what my PT says too. If it hurts, I'm doing it wrong. He gets a bit excited when I announce that I'm hurting....he throws ice or heat on me depending on the situation....

Oh my gosh RW, I hope you get great results with the PT!

I'm not able to tolerate PT because they gave me "funny exercises" to do at home, and I thought I'd hurt myself further. That's why I was so slow to respond to you, I didn't want to be a bad influence just when you were starting out. :o

I have noticed though, that repetitive, easy exercise has been helping me to regain the strength in my legs. I got an elliptical machine that works wonders for me. I have to take it easy on it though because many parts of me are fragile now due to the MS, spasticity and age.

Keep up the good work! It sounds like you have a good one!

Riverwild 02-25-2008 05:54 PM

Thanks everyone!

She told me to start out slow, since it's been so long. I know all about NOT pushing through the pain, work it easy and only do as much as I can.

I had to talk to her about the whole spazz thing, she'd heard of Baclofen pumps but not pills , and I explained that I DO the stretches they have on the NMSS site every day before I get out of bed, but I still have problems walking until things get loosened up.

If I sit for any amount of time, it all gets stiff again and I have to go through the whole stretch and go slow just to MOVE. So I just don't sit for very long, which makes me more fatigued and then I get stuck again...

I feel like the Tin Man, needing my oil can. I hate feeling like this and I have to be able to move to work. Even getting out of a car takes me 10 minutes! I am watching my calories and since all the chocolate in the house is gone now, that helps...:D

I am back to swimming too. I got a pass for the HS pool, lap swim starts at 6:00 a.m. and I just change at work and go straight there. The pool is freezing at that time of day and the cold affects me worse than heat does, so I have to stretch before I go and then take it slow once I am in the water. The derned kid keeps putting up the "Slow Lane" sign at the end of my lane and THAT is discouraging! As someone who used to swim a mile or better a day, I am ashamed of myself.

I want it all to work NOW...LOL!

I've never been good at waiting and taking it slow just frustates me. I don't want to hear age and weight and MS!! I want to be healthy, elastic Rivergoddess!
( picture me stomping my feet here like DM's avatar)

The only good thing is when I get home from swim, I am so tired that I fall asleep immediately! I slept today for 8 hours for the first time in AGES!

Rant over...:p

CayoKay 02-25-2008 06:44 PM

pssssssst, River?

methinks you should, mayhap, send our dear Empathy Man to PT?

:D

Hi RW -

Oh my - Tinkerbell with a little tantrum type pigtailed whatever !!

I just started PT today - maybe it's because I'm my age - but the guy started me out slowly - trying to get my hips, legs and feet to do what they're supposed to do - when they're supposed to do it - can't wait until we get to balance - it's always fun to fall in public - he put me on a machine that you push treadles sort of like a recumbent bike - that was fun - I know from past experience with PT that you can train new groups of muscles to do the work of the ones that have failed - keep at it you'll be back in a kayack in no time - maybe run down Socatean for practice !

Yep ... YOU sent it to me for Christmas, RW!! LOL

right now - the lake is frozen ... but my neighbor has one of those 'treadle' paddle-boats ... I may use it this summer - but, I'm afraid that I'll get out to the middle of the lake and not have the energy to peddle back to shore ..

BUT - last summer, I went on a couple canoe rides ... and let my arms do the work - I felt like a million bucks when we got in ... I didn't have to stress out my legs ... and just the walk back home was enough for me! I want a canoe for my birthday! LOL

I know you're knee deep in snow for awhile yet ... maybe one of those treadle-paddle boats would be a fun exercise to work into your routine! ;)

Risby 02-26-2008 07:08 AM

PT

Like you Riverwild I just started PT last week.
So far so good.

I spent most of the time between the parallel bars trying to stand and walk without doing my weeble imitation.
The exercises to strengthen my left arm actually felt good.

I was a little sore the next day, but not too bad.

Unfortunately, the therapist and I have decided that I must give up my dreams of becoming a prima ballerina.

I wish I could find a water exercise program.
I really would enjoy that.
Best of Luck to you and hope the therapy helps.

Just walking to the car is enough for me right about now! It's the ICE! We have one of those paddle boats, it's a double and it ain't easy to do by yourself! My side keeps sinking!:p

Risby, The ballerina comment just cracked me up! Gotta warn me to swallow the coffee first when you do that!

I am glad to hear I am not the only one in this! Keep posting your successes and rants! I'm right there with you all!!

KarenMarie 03-08-2008 09:28 PM

Now I screwed up my shoulder trying to reach to the back seat from the front with seat belt on - dumb move - 2 months of PT for that combined with more PT for walking - at the end maybe I'll be able to walk without kicking myself and raise my arm over my head -what a wonderful way to end this endless winter !! Snow up there Riverwild ???

tkrik 03-08-2008 10:18 PM

RW - you have convinced me that I need cognitive PT. I had the worst time picturing what the heck she had you do. I imagined myself doing this in PT and all I saw was blue; blue carpet and things crashing down all around me as I am sure my foot would have caught on something causing a huge chain reaction.

My once athletic & coordinated body has become a walking catastrophe.:D

Despite the weird things they try to make us do, in the long run it does work. Just take it slow and don't over do it. You'll get there. Heck, I am really impressed with all that you ARE doing. That's awesome!

Seatbelts are mandatory here in Maine for all you flatlanders...

Sorry to hear you are being tortured along with us all Karen! P.S. NO Snow!!! It has done a bit of raining here though...:p I went to the store at 4:00 and I was lucky I made it, some deeeeep puddles out there! Good thing it's still frozen ground or I woukd be doing the mud shuffle! I hope it's a slow thaw here. I prefer the lake at least 5 feet from my door!!

Thanks my thriftysistah :p

Yesterday I had to ask her to close the door when I did the new lessons. One was the angry cat/dying cow or some yoga name...the guy outside the door fell off the bike machine thingy after about three rises and falls of me on the table on my hands and knees arching my back while sitting on my heels and then dropping my back and body into a reverse arch... It'll serve me well at some point...

"We've" discovered that I don't or won't bend at the hips like I am supposed to anymore. She studied up...I did the research part where I don't...

It was a workout, I have ten new stretches I have to add this week. Hopefully there will be a Gumby contest at the end.:D

On the good side? A licensed therapist opened a new "relaxation pool" with aquatherapy added 30 miles away. It's a 94 degree saline pool and aromatherapy might even be included...just from looking at the paisley ad...right up my alley!! The PT was interested and she is checking to see if we can get it prescribed as part of PT :p. Of course she would have to be with me to make sure the therapy was what she recommended...LOL

We're going on the "cold makes me spazz" deal...since the High School pool is at 85 when I get in at 6 am... I get warmed up and my hour is over.

Hope all our other PT buddies are doing ok...chime in here!

Riverwild...

I STILL want'cha to send our dear sweet Empathy Man to PT.

OOOOOOOPS!

he fell off the TABLE, poor guy!

I went to a MS PT. DH and I refered to her as the Nazi. I still walk funny but I am PPMS.

RW they say EVERYONE has a twin.....:D

I am glad to hear that you might of found a new pool to use - is the 30 minutes North - I could meet you........

I have started going to the local Holiday Inn to use the gym and pool after work - I haven't gone since my trip but tomorrow I am starting again.

Good Luck my friend!

MSacorn 03-09-2008 08:51 PM

I'm doing PT twice a week for this ankle sprain. I have to admit it feels good to be moving again, even when it hurts. I hope it gets me in some kind of shape (not round). So when Dad gets the basement gym set up (any day now), and starts bootcamp, I won't die. :thud:

tkrik 03-11-2008 05:11 PM

Hey Gumby, how are doing with PT? Well, maybe you are not Gumby yet. LOL.

I did my yoga moves this morning and thought of you. I still would not be able to safely do what that woman asked of you.:p

Nope Yabbit...Rockland or Rockport, right on the line. I will know this week what's up with it all! Glad to hear you have something local to help you out!

I can't remember where the song comes from, a kids show from long ago..."Bend and Strettttttch...Reach for the skyyyy, Stand on tippy toes, wayyyyy up high!!!"

Imma bending and a-stretching. I'm so glad that the man is away this week so I don't have an audience while I do this...

(My name is not grace ...or gumby yet, but I AM trying!!!) :D

Risby 03-12-2008 08:33 AM

Continuing on the PT theme

Been doing PT 3 times a week for a little over a month now and Golly Gee .....it actually has helped!!

I saw the neuro yesterday and he feel I can stop going to the PT center and do the exercises.....except for the balance stuff at home.:D

I actually seem to have some endurance now and can definitely walk somewhat better than before PT:holysheep:

The doctor had ordered a C-Spine and T-spine MRI where he discovered a lovely herniated disc at C 6-7.

Thankfully this has caused me no problems what so ever but now I get to play the referral game with the PCM and an orthopod.

Still looking for a water exercise program.
Hope everyone is doing OK

Riverwild 03-12-2008 04:14 PM

Thanks for checking in everyone!

I have been trying to fit in at least one set of all the stretches she gave me, but I hafta tell you, my schedule doesn't LIKE it!

I work a ten hour overnight shift, I have a 1/2 hour drive each way, I get home, get wood, load the woodstove, toss in laundry, try to at least scoop the cat box(I am catsitting this week:mad: P-U!) shower and bed. I get up, make coffee, dry the laundry, yell at said cats for destroying the house (like they listen to me), get MORE wood, load the woodstove again and get ready for work again.

I was hoping that while the main character was away visiting his mother I could at least get some cleaning done here. Nope. I just want to catch up on my sleep!:p

I'm trying to be disciplined but I just feel as if there isn't enough time in the day for ANYTHING lately, nevermind what I SHOULD be doing!

( mini rant over!)

Tell me how YOU find the time to fit PT in your life daily please?

Hope it's going a little better for everyone else!:)

Oh, we are supposed to do the exercises at home? :Scratch-Head:

I was wondering why I got these papers with drawings showing what we do in PT, and these stretchy bands. :D

My life is not nearly as busy as yours and I intend to do them everyday, but alas I don't. Sorry I can't be more help?

DM 03-12-2008 09:00 PM

Geez RW~ I don't like your schedule. That's a rough one.

I don't work and I told the Dr I didn't want to do PT, so am doing it at home.

You are the WOMAN!!!! ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
