I'd take a pool over a stair stepper anyday Frank! Sounds like a good way to go for you!!! Hope its a better week for you!!

Sold a snow machine this weekend....should pay a few more mortgages....oh dear....what a life!!!

Foggy Brain 02-25-2008 03:08 PM

Yes, Frank, I would strongly recommend using "water" as a form of exercise. Water allows "natural resistance" when exercising, one does not overheat (make sure pool water is not heated!), and is easier on the joints. I use water aerobics and swimming as a form of exercise . In fact, my local chapter is organizing an exercise group to encorage members to exercise together.

Here is a great resource that explains the benefits of water exercise:

Have fun!

I go to water aerobics class three times a week and I love it!!

I can walk forwards and backwards in the water and the water helps me keep my balance.

We have several ladies in our class who use walkers on land but you should see them in the water.

One 93 year old can really kick *****; oops; I meant so say she does very well!
:p

thanks jeannie, i also hope it goes smoothly this week, and hope your week is a good one also:hug:

Foggy thanks for the link, interesting waiting for doc to call back and write a script the local villages park dist will honor it and i can do it for free

as to 93 yr olds kicking a %$ sound like a new tv show in the making:eek:

Hey Frank,

I go to water therapy at our local rehab pool. It is just wonderful. I can do things in the water, that I couldn't dream about doing on land. It is a very diverse group (all shapes, ages and maladies). The pool is heated to 92 degrees, but that doesn't bother me at all. We have all kinds of exercise equipment to use, and can even do sit-ups and pull ups with the extra equipment in the deep end. I really recommend it, its easy on your joints, but you get a workout.I tried the classes, but like the free exercise times better. Good luck!

I just got a precription from neuro for water therapy for bad disc in lower back. I am thinking I might like this and continue after I am done since the therapy place lets you use the pool on your own time for a fee once you have done therapy there.

I've heard great things about water therapy with MS, but I can't handle the cold. The kiddie pool is ok, but there's always kids in it. :D

Hard to beat water as an exercise, low impact and as bad as I walk no fear of falling. We got an above ground pool shortly after I herniated a disc in 94 and it was a help. Also an easier place for me too move now with the MS.

My MIL moved into a new house with a pool last spring and I spent most of the summer in the pool. It was amazing how much I could do in the water and how much it helped me.

Frank, I did water aerobics through both pregnancies and absolutely LOVED it! You really don't overheat in the water, like you do on the land. I could not tolerate the "land" aerobics...if I got prescribed water therapy I know I'd be jumping for joy!

Another benefit of water aerobics/therapy is that there are no mirrors in front of you! And if you can't do an exercise too well, no one else knows (accept maybe your immediate neighbors!)

Good luck!

weegot5kiz 02-26-2008 02:54 PM

thank you all, I had read about this early on, with my DX, had just forgotten about it

bird odds are the neighbor who sees me fail probably also failed one or two of the exercises, so your right its no biggie

when I goof up I'll just confused them, I will go under water come back up and say I needed a breath of fresh air,

I would imagine after i do that I should have a lot more space to exercise,

see there is a method to my madness:eek:

Gazelle 02-26-2008 05:36 PM

I did it as part of my PT when I was recovering from a shoulder surgery. It was great and yep, you don't overheat! Used to do aqua-aerobics when I was in school and loved it. Not being Ms. Graceful any day, I was able to blend in with everyone and not look stupid. :D

Good luck with it!

Come on down, Lady. No kiddies in my pool. How warm do you like it?

I don't *go to therapy* but I'll be out there every nice day all summer. I never feel better than that. I can't do an hour of anything - but I can be in the water all afternoon.

My dogs even swim for exercise.

This article, recently written by one of our comrades who's on several of these forums (pen name used), might help motivate you:
