My First Memory Was...
... standing in the bedroom doorway watching my mama change my baby sister's diaper. Maybe I was jealous, curious,.... don't know why that is my earliest memory. But in my mind it seems like only yesterday. Baby sister was tiny, so I wouldn't have been more than 1 1/2 years old. :icecream:
I am always amazed with people's first memories......what is yours???? |
Ice Capades
My first memory is:
Sitting on my uncles lap at the Ice Capades... I was 2. I can remember it very clearly.... We were sitting way up in the arena in an aisle seat. I cherish that memory... My uncle died a few months later in a vehicle fire. I was born on my uncle's birthday... we had a special bond. Thank you for taking me back... ahhh...memories. Abbie |
Your uncle sounds to you like my grandpa was to me!
I can still smell his bib overalls when I sat on his lap... here his laugh and see the twinkle in his eyes.... I could live in memory lane for the rest of my life! At least take long dreamy walks.
Thank you! |
Climbing the stairs and going into my sisters' room in the attic. I don't know how old I was.
|
The next memory I have is around that same age...
My uncle---different one---owned an Italian restaurant and bar... I used to crawl under the swinging bar door. then crawl around behind the bar and sit there until he noticed me... he'd then pick me up and sit me on the bar. I remember him telling all of his patrons to look at me. He would let me sit there as long as I wanted... feeding me breadsticks and playing with me. Memory lane... what a fun stroll... :) |
Riding in my grandma's shiny red convertible and playing on her rooftop across from Wrigley Field. I couldn't have been more than two.
|
The first memory I can truly pinpoint is watching Star Wars at the drive - in movie theater. It was the summer it had come out. We were loaded for bear with blankets, ice chests of food and drink, etc in the dodge ram van my parents had. I was 3 and my bro was 8.
LOL, probably the reason I became a sci fi fan. :D |
first memory is of my 3rd birthday party...
I got a one piece lemon yellow bathing suit with bright blue duckies on it, and a matching yellow swim cap, with a blue duck on one side. our family was at Jones Gulch Camp in La Honda, California, in 1960. in the big mess hall after dinner, the lights suddenly went out, and a cake with three brightly-burning candles appeared, like magic. all the other campers sang "Happy Birthday to You!" and I opened the white box with my new bathing suit... http://www.campjonesgulch.org/sitedi...sideIII_tm.jpg |

1960??? OMG!! I was at school then!! My 1st real memory was when I was about 3 1/2 or 4 years old.....NO! I am NOT telling you what year! :D . But I was in hospital to have my tonsils removed. I remember a female person holding an anaesthetic mask over my face before I went under. It was such a scary experience I had nightmares for years. I do "remember" other things from when I was even younger, but I'm not sure now whether I really remember, or whether I remember because my parents mentioned these things when I was older. |
mine was not a good one, and when i mentioned it to my mom she says I was about 18 months old, when this happened cause she left my abusive father right after it happened, he drank too much.
|
I was about 2.5 or three and my family was moving into our new house. It was two story. The stairs were definately my favorite part of the house. I was soooo excited I kept going UP the stairs...and DOWN the stairs...and UP the stairs...and DOWN the stairs.
Yup, you guessed it. I tripped. My grandfather caught me in a box mid-tumble, halfway down the stairs. The stairs weren't my favorite part of the house after that. |
I was three years old and put my hand on the pretty red burner on the stove!
My long term memory is great but short term...short circuits! |

I'm with you Janie! I can remember from 4-20 years old, but ask me what I had for dinner last night......and I'm lost! |
Wow, first off I am so glad to see this thread! DH thinks I'm strange because I can remember things from very early childhood!
My first memory is actually my grandmother's funeral when I was around 2. Believe it or not, it's the only thing I remember about her. :( I can actually see the funeral home, the casket, my grandmother and the dress she was wearing, my mom, the minister, etc. |
First Memory
I was almost two years old, and my Mom had just come home with my new baby brother. My Grandmother had come to stay with us to "help" and she would not let me go into the bedroom to see Mom and the new baby. I remember thinking, "but,I'm the baby". Anyway, when Grandmother's back was turned, I sneaked into the room anyway. The light was out and it was dark, but I could hear unusual little noises and Mom murmuring to the new baby boy and She eventually heard me sneaking up and gave me a reassuring hug. :winky:

Hmmm, first memory.
I remember seeing my mom lying on the pull-out couch she and Dad used for a bed, and my sister was about to walk our dog. I was about 3 yrs old. Not a very remarkable memory, but it stuck. |

ok, that one spawned an old memory. I was ~ 3 when I just had to put my hand on the incinerator. And no, butter does NOT stop the burning... I remember lots of wierd stuff - walking down the street unscrewing people's x-mas lite bulbs and throwing them down on the sidewalk to hear them "pop", kissing Sheila Moore on the cheek and running away fast, etc. Strange. It's like I'm looking in on a little boy than actually remembering the events... Tom |
My first Memory
Interesting topic!!
I clearly remember my mom lying on the sofa and I couldn't lay down with her. She had just returned from the hospital after having abdominal surgery. I was 18 months old. I don't remember her being away [we lived with my grandmother so I guess she kept me entertained] but remember Mom lying on the sofa when she came home. Later on we were talking about it and Mom doubted I could have remembered this, until I told her exactly what she was wearing, which quilt was covering her etc. My DH can top this....he remembers going on the 'potty' at 11 months of age!! I find it interesting what people do remember and how young they were. Have to ask my kids what their first 'memory' is. |
I can't believe so many of you can remember things when they were very young.
My 1st memory was when I was 5, me and my dad were sitting in the living room floor watching TV. And than my next memory wasn't until I was 6 after my mom and me moved out (don't remember the move even). :( I can remember bits and pieces from 6 to 30 and than I don't have much of a memory for the past 4 years and flat out don't remember yesterday! :p |
I can remember back to when I was about three. My parents had taken me to a store called Ellman's - it was sort of like a Service Merchandise type store. I can remember the brick steps outside and even the iron railing that separated the two sides of the steps.
It was Christmas time and they were picking up a gift for someone. I saw a Santa Claus doll in the window and wanted that thing SO bad! I kept wondering off to look at it and my Dad came to find me - I was out of his sight and he was panicking! There was a security guard standing at the door (I can even remember his grey hat). When my Dad found me and before he could even scold me I said "you buy this for Kelly?" The security guard looked at him and said "how can you say no?". Needless to say - I got the doll!! My Dad used to love to tell that story - and even told a nurse about it while he was in hospice (it was right after Christmas). |
I know you'll all think I'm crazy, but..... I can remember my mom taking my picture when I was about 6 weeks old. They had me laid on the bed, stuffing me into pretty clothes, all these huge faces looming over me, then a really bright flash!! When I was older, I thought it must have been something I dreamed, but then I saw the picture they took. My mom and sisters said there's no way I could have remembered that, but everything I remember about the incident is from the perspective of an infant, blurry and out of focus.
I also remember, when I was about 3, having to go to the storm cellar in the middle of the night because of tornado. The funnel cloud lifted up and went over our house, and my dad opened the cellar door and let me look up into it. It was like a big hole in the clouds, and I could see the stars through it. |
I remember my Aunt Katie holding my new cousin Ralphie in our kitchen. He had his newborn hat on his tiny head, and he was wrappe in a blue blanket. I asked if I could hold him. Aunt Katie said, "Uh, no." LOL. I was 2.
I loved that kid at first sight. He was more like my lil brother than my cousin. Still is. The little meatball. :D |
My first memories are not good...to personal to share. But I did see a picture of me recently, sitting on Santa's lap. I must have been about 2...those memories came flooding back, remembering how shy I was to approach Santa. Thankfully, I now have a good 'first' memory.

I don't know how old I was but I remember asking my mom not to wash the flannel pajamas my grandmom had made me because then they wouldn't smell like grandmom.
Grandpa and Grandmom had a wood stove and everything smelled like the wood burning. I can't smell that smell to this day without thinking of her. |
This is a bittersweet thread...very interesting....
my very first memory is when I'm 5. All my memories from 5-7 are school related..... kind of odd to me.... |
It's amazing how smells can bring such strong memories and feelings! To this day I associate the smell of kerosene with the safety and togetherness of being in the storm cellar (from the kerosene lamp). And one of my early boyfriends always wore British Sterling....

That is what is bizarre. We can remember stuff from so long ago, but can't remember what we walked into the next room to get... or which room we were headed for! Thanks! |

Good idea about asking your kids what their first memory was! I'll have to try that! Thanks! |
I believe you!

Whenever I smell lilac blooming outside I am immediately in the backyard of the house I grew up in. My mother had lilac everywhere and I could smell it through my open bedroom window. Such a simple thing yet everytime I get a whiff of it I'm right back "home" again. I long for that simpler time. . . . . |
My first Memory, at barely 3, is a bad bad bad memory.:( It has nothing to do with my Family. I had a wonderful Childhood and most of my memories are great ones.
My early years were in the 40s and my life was very much like the movie, "A Christmas Story" w/Darren McGavin..LOL! I watch it every year and so, relate to it. |
My first memory is actually a smell.
When I was one, my father was stationed in Iran. I don't remember anything other than a smell that reminds me of Iranian bread. Back in the states whenever (before all the emissions testing) a big truck would pass by there was a smell that always reminded me of the bread. My mother says it's probably the smell of sulfur since that's what they used to cook with. I don't remember what the bread actually looks or tastes like but that smell always reminds me of it. |
I was probably around the age of 1 or 1 1/2. (my sister thinks I was younger tho)
I woke up in my crib, and no one was around to come get me. I cried for a bit, hoping my mom would come get me, but she didnt. So, I started climbing over the railing. I was hanging there, holding onto the rails and trying to climb down when my sister (2 yrs older than me) came into the room. I was just starting to fall when she caught me. I whacked the back of my head on her mouth. I dont know if I knocked her front teeth out, but we do have some pictures of her missing her front teeth at around the age she would have been then. I do have the very clear memory of looking back at her just before I fell and I can remember feeling her catching me and the incredible pain in the back of my head from hitting it on her mouth. Another early memory...probably the first memory that I have where I know what I was actively thinking. (probably 2 1/2 or 3yrs old) I was in the living room, standing on my head in one of the armchairs. The memory of it feels kind of like that's when my concious and logical thinking must have just kicked in, since the memory is so clear and I can remember going out the front door after that, and looking at the bright red and yellow tulips that grew in our front yard. So, it must have been early spring. I can also remember dropping a baby bottle behind the toilet in our basement. The toilet was on a platform next to the furnace. (no bathroom sink there, just a toilet...wasnt even a door there) My baby bottle landed under the furnace. I think my parents found the bottle several days later...still half full of milk. (Ewwww!) |
All of your memories make me smile! :grouphug: I really needed that tonight!
