DocJohn...About the Chestnut?

Hi Doc.:)

I'm wondering if the Chestnut colour can be made the new default for our new NeuroTalk? Still keep the other as an option, but the Chestnut is great and better yet "New", and that's us..:D

Thanks for your consideration and a big thanks for "NeuroTalk". <applause>

Hi SallyC. I've been wondering if I knew you from another life? Anyway it is good to have you here.

Sally, I have cateracts and the chestnut is not helping me, but I would be happy just to have the blue to fall back on and I can keep the blue and you the chestnut. I like the chestnut, but can't read much with it.

I love your avatar. :) I also love our new name, NeuroTalk. Most of all I love having this forum. DocJohn is very kind and gracious to all of us. I'm glad we found him too!;) I'm easy, so whatever is decided I will work around it, ok?

my love, Jo

jccgf 10-18-2006 08:58 AM

I suppose so long as we can set the option individually, it doesn't matter a whole lot what the default is set to. While the idea of a distinguishing color change is a good idea, I have some visual problems that make the chestnut more difficult for me to read.

But, because we can set it ourselves... it doesn't really make too much difference to me, either.

Are there any other choices available?

Cara

lady_express_44 10-18-2006 09:44 AM

Ultimately, I'd like to see some other choices available too. I like that the color is distiguishable, but the chestnut is also hard for me to read.

Cherie

SallyC 10-18-2006 11:08 AM

I'm sorry :o , I thought I was the odd woman out, and had problems reading the chestnut at first. I didn't realize that others had the same problem.

I went to my PC and darkened my view, just a little and my problem was solved. Now I love it. Of course with cataracs, dimming your view wouldn't help.

Having the choice is fine with me too, I just thought, that since most people seemed to like it, that the chestnut could be our new default. But I wouldn't want to chase any newbys off with a new color.

Jo, I think I knew all of you, in another life.:D

kimmydawn 10-18-2006 11:16 AM

I like the chestnut, but when I switch to it the page goes off my screen and I have to use a horizontal scroll to view the rest of the page.

Is anyone else's chestnut doing that, or do I need to do some adjusting here on my puter?

Thanks!

KD

Julie 10-18-2006 11:18 AM

I really like it!

dadsgirl 10-18-2006 11:37 AM

KD ~

The same thing happens on my computer ~ the chesnut color widens my screen for some reason and I have to scroll across to read it.

I really like the chesnut color ~ but it's a pain to have to scroll to read!

Sue

redjpwranglergirl 10-18-2006 12:31 PM

The chestnut, on my computer, looks gray and washed out and is hard for me to read....What's up with that?! I'm a computer "idiot" for the most part:D so I'll probably leave mine on the default color.

Wittesea 10-18-2006 01:12 PM

On my PC the chestnut makes everything get narrow.

There was a similar conversation on on of the forums here (can't remember where now) and someone pointed out that the type of browser you use (IE, firefox, the Mac browser, etc...) is what causes the Chestnut to widen for some people and narrow for other people.

I think there was also mention of changing something in your browser options or in your PC options to make the narrow/wide problem better.... But I of course forget the details

mrsD 10-18-2006 04:38 PM

amazing...the differences

I have a narrow screen, with a white background, and lavender gray
side panels. The white background is much easier for me to read. The other colors (if you can call them that) are a warm gray
moving towards lavender. There is a cooler lt. blue on the area just around the reply window. These colors BTW are very similar to the new
Yahoo Beta email, that I recently converted to. I am an artist and am perhaps more sensitive to these colors.

I wonder how some of you get the wide screen effect? Is it my newest
Mozilla download? Which we just did to enable the Yahoo Beta? I haven't used IE for so long, it is sadly out of date.

Is it the monitors? You know various monitors age, and then certain colors,
no longer show up on them. This is why I changed my signature to lavender..it looks really nice to me. duh? I have a high definition flat screen, for my graphic work. So perhaps I see things that others don't ? (no comments please:p )

Snoopy 10-18-2006 06:04 PM

I like having color choices but chestnut is not one I would use - I can't see it too well.

lisag 10-18-2006 06:56 PM

Kimmydawn,
I too have a problem reading the post with the chestnut..it widens the posts as well on my computer..but as long as we have a choice to me it doesn't matter what the default is set on..Lisa

mrsD 10-18-2006 07:33 PM

according to my son....

I called my son, the computer techie...

And he had me change my pixel resolution to 800x 600 and yep...the
size changes, and there is a scroll bar and problems.

What I am at now is 1280x 1024 and it is smaller and narrow.

Go to Control Panel
Appearance/themes
and change the resolution to 1280x 1024 and it might be nicer for you.

You can also right click on desk top and pick properties,
hit settings, and change there the same way. Lower resolution will change
the width.

Give this a try before you give up on Chestnut.;)

MrsD, I had just now remembered that and came here to post. Not every monitor can handle the higher resolution, but if it can't, Windows will immeditately revert to a lower resolution.

When you do this, all the icons and fonts appear smaller and the scroll bar narrower (and I keep on "falling off" and opening up webpages where I don't want to go! ). But you can correct this situation relatively easily.

Like MsD said above,
Go to Control Panel
Appearance/themes
and change the resolution to 1280x 1024 and it might be nicer for you.
OR
You can also right click on desk top and pick properties,
hit settings, and change there the same way.

Keep clicking and right-clicking to see what is there, then go to town. If you are worried that you will change something and not like the result, then quickly jot down what the first value is... then try it out ("Apply", then check it out).

Also, I just remembered something else, that at OBT, after the initial move, JL took a bit of time adjusting the font to a larger easier to read one. That can be done, and will take away the reading difficulty some are having.

Happiness, all! ;)

SallyC 10-18-2006 08:57 PM

I have a Dell laptop with XP and I use IE. I'm not having the problems with resolution, that some of you are having.

You would be suprised what adjustment you can make to make your browsing more to your liking.

Change your resolution.
Ignore Internet Font and Colors, and pick your own.
Increase the Test Size.
Make your view brighter or duller.

I'm learning as I go along.

Go to The computer forum and ask Zombieslayer or JoJo or some of the other PC Gurus. They usually have the answer.

DocJohn 10-19-2006 12:27 PM

Thanks for the suggestion(s)...

We'll be adding additional themes as well. Stay tuned! :)

loisba 10-19-2006 02:32 PM

Oh, goody!!! More colors! :D

kimmydawn 10-19-2006 03:37 PM

More colors is great!!!

I hope that we can figure out why changing to the chestnut for some is causing an issue with the page going off the screen so that we won't have the issue with the new ones. I might find one I just HAVE to have and get obsessed with making it work. ;) I've done that before and stayed up all night...LOL.

I don't think it's the settings in my computer because I've never had that happen before. It's only happening with the chestnut. Now, even though it might not be IN my computer, I would still be satisfied to adjust it within my computer if I learn how. :)

Yeah, changing the resolution didn't help me either. I used all three of my browers...mozilla firefox, IE and Opera...same with each.

WOW if you go to the vb 3.6 styles section you can see all that they are creating there.

one called tulips is pretty - but a bit too much pinky for me

and if you scroll to the bottom of the tulip page - more styles/themes to sample...

it's pretty

kimmydawn 10-19-2006 06:42 PM

Oh, wow!!! I'm getting VERY excited about these! I did read in the first link where others were having trouble with the chestnut being too wide as well.

Thanks!

KD

Ellie 10-19-2006 07:15 PM

I'd personally love several options mainly because my vision varies per day depending on seizure activity. I frequently favor a darker background with lighter text colors, and sometimes it's the opposite. But if it is dark background with dark text, or light on light - it's really a task for me to be able to read. Having options like this makes it so easy for me to change it depending on my brains mood. :D

SallyC 10-19-2006 08:07 PM

The designer said this:

Quote:

I absolutely love this skin. Is there anyway to make it so narrower instead of wider? Thank's so much.

Yes, use stylevar in option to style.

mrsD 10-19-2006 11:02 PM

Hmmm...puzzling....

Well, thanks Lara for that link. It is very interesting.

My screen at highest resolution (which my monitor recommends) is like that
screenshot you mention. (the upper left).

I like the narrower format...because reading long lines, in long posts, sort
of mixes up my trifocals. Shorter lengths (lines) are easier for me to read.

I think this must be a monitor issue. Monitors can be very different, in
color representation, and expression. My husband reminded me that our monitor
came with a ton of "instructions" which we have not even explored yet! :p
My son just set it to the highest resolution, because he knows what a color
fussbudget I can be.:o

When I called my son yesterday, he viewed it in Safari, and Firefox...as he
has a Mac. Both showed like mine and Lara's. We have Firefox here, the newest download. This skin as I mentioned before is very similar to the
new Yahoo Beta email. Only that fills the whole screen, and is not narrow
down the middle--but the colors are very similar. Both my son and we here, have flat screens. I couldn't get much help from him, otherwise. When I did change my resolution, I did get a full screen version with a scroll bar. It also enlarged the font size.

When I come back and view as a guest (I log out each time), I get the blue
default, and have to change it back. Now that I use this Chestnut more,
the old default is quite a "shock" :p

Oh, well, the techno crunch gets worse each year for us old timers.
We are struggling with a new backup hard-drive..tricky. And...
We are going to get a new laptop, with wireless card, etc. for Xmas. That is a huge
jump for us...to update the old Win 98 on our old old Vaio...upstairs. And my
cell contract is over, so we are looking to a new carrier... sheesssh.
I am getting too old for all this I guess! And this Dell is almost 2 yrs old now..a real clunker!

kimmydawn 10-19-2006 11:30 PM

OK. I changed my resolution and changed to the chestnut and I LOVE IT.

It's different and I'll have to get used to it (the font is smaller), but I get so much more on a page for less scrolling and it looks so neat and clean. Right now, though, the change is making me a bit light-headed...LOL.

Overall, I really like it and think I'll keep it this way. Even if we get new skins, I like this neat, clean, centered look that came from changing the resolution.

thanks!

KD

trekker 10-19-2006 11:56 PM

Oh please, can "Pink Butterflies" be an option? Please please please please please.....please?

Pretty please?

mrsD 10-19-2006 11:57 PM

Well...

Kimmy... glad to see you did get some changes going!

The longer you use the Chestnut... I think you will find the older version--
the default... harder to use. But that is only my opinion..And I don't think you are as OLD as dirt, like I am. LOL At least your piccy suggests otherwise! :p

kimmydawn 10-20-2006 12:02 AM

Just turned 43 the 2nd of this month, so it doesn't look as old to me as it did in my teens. ;)

Yes, I'm really liking it and adjusting now.

I really like the pulsating arrow to the left of the forum...pulsating warmly to show new posts in the forum.

Thank you!

KD

mrsD 10-20-2006 12:06 AM

pulsating arrow?

My gosh... I don't have that at all!

But I do have blinking boxes...very small boxes, on the posts that are new.

Hey, I want an pulsating ARROW!

How confusing it all is... and I am really spent from a long night at work..
I will have to contemplate the pulsating arrow! LOL

Silly quesstion for you about the chestnut.
when I look at the tan color to the right of peoples avatars I see a couple of marks that are white(without color)...one looks kindo of like a star or a short cross and the other one looks like a kite of some sort or a box with tails.
Do other folks see this? or am I just hallucinating...lol
bizi

Curious 10-23-2006 09:40 PM

dang...and here i thought i made a good batch of hot ovaltine. :p

they sure look pretty tho. :D

~scrabble 10-23-2006 09:56 PM

Bizi,

I had to change back to the Chestnut to have a look ... and I think all of the white marks beside the avatars are stars. Little dots and larger, twinkling stars.

Now I'll change back to the old blue because then I can see if anyone is in the chatrooms.

(((Bizi))) :)

bizi 10-23-2006 10:35 PM

So they are stars!!!!
nice and subtle....

southernlady 10-23-2006 11:45 PM

Actually the chestnut is set for 850 (I can decifer the css and went to view source)
Quote:

table width="850"
which means if your montitor resolution is less than 800 wide, you WILL scroll. MOST monitors these days are set at 1024x768 and at that resolution, you will not scroll.

The default is set for 100% which means that regardless of how little or big your screen is, it makes itself fit.

Btw, MOST of the GOOD themes are at www.vbulletin.org Do you recognise the designer's name?????? :) Liz

Mrs D,

You can see the pulsating arrows when you look at the Index page:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/index.php

They are the big ones that are out beside each individual forum's name. They will "pulse" when the forum as any new posts since the last time you visited.

Off of that topic, no matter what I do, I can't get the Chestnut Skin to fit my monitor screen. I have tried everything everyone has suggested? I don't use firefox (someone asked if maybe it was affecting only users of that), my browser is IE. The only way I have gotten the thing to fit on the screen, I wound up with font so small that there was no way that I would have been able to read it for very long without getting a major headache...and everything else on my screen shrunk too (like One More Time said it would. LOL, I had tired it first, before she posted that, though. *Sigh). So, I wanted you to know that your age doesn't have anything to do with it; I am 37. ;) LOL

Hope that you have a good day, and that you found your pulsating arrows now!:D

Take Care,
Joselita

mrsD 10-24-2006 11:23 AM

DUH? Joselita...

Thank you!... I never noticed them!:o I use forums home alot to view for
new posts etc..it is a quick way to catch up. But they pulse so slowly, that I scroll right past them... and I look mostly to the right, and not the left.

Thanks for pointing them out...trifocals are a bummer, I cannot read thru
the distance part, and the reading portion is only an inch wide. I don't have the variable type, as they make me dizzy. So the arrows are in my blur zone!

Oh, well, I am used to stuff like this! Thanks for being patient with me!
