General feelings about our world
Big subject huh? I was just listening to the pastor of Barack Obama's church ranting and raving and generally just being so awful. It got me thinking of our lives and interactions with each other.
Do you think things are better or worse...let's say over the past 25 yrs. Doesn't it seem like there are so many people who break laws, use drugs, drink too much, treat animals with cruelty, damage property, join gangs???? Now, having said that is it because we just hear more about these things or what. I'm sure there has always been crime, but I do remember a time when you almost never heard of people harming the elderly, children or women. Now it's in our faces all the time. What's your feeling on this? Tootsie |
"What's your feeling on this?"
I hate mean people! I've pondered this as well; has it gotten worse, or are we just hearing about it more. I think it's gotten worse in relation to our lack of moral judgement. I also think it has alot to do with "I'm okay, You're okay"....everything is right and okay to do, as long as you don't get caught. I'll leave it at that :D |
I don't "hate" people; but I do find them
obnoxious, ignorant, rude, intolerable, and so on - and it's either usually because they were reared in this manner or developed this attitude. But basically from my years of being a ordained minister and pastor, primarily I've found that this problematic issue was mostly due to folks being insecure. They were trying to be someone that they are not... And the other issue was low-self esteem, which they attempt to hide it by covering it up by being a hot-shot, swelled egos, superiority, and so on. Very few of them were a result of being from dysfunctional families or abuse and were a result of being defensive mode. Working with them step-by-step to resolve the issue, like the 12 steps used in Alcoholics Anonymous often resolved it, but if I determined and discerned that the individual had a severe psychological or psychiatric problem; I would find out who their Doctor was and consult with him/her privately so they may deal with their patient one-on-one. Many times Physicians have informed me that they have tried to tell such person that they needed help, then I would state I would then make my attempts to try to work with them to get them to seek help, because such is a sensitive issue and must be deal with in a special way. Many times the individual complied after a progressive and slow counseling, but a few were resistant and balked to it and it was without much avail. Neither their own Doctor or the Pastoral Care could do much for such individuals. It happens. The individual would want to want help, no one can force them unless they are a threat or danger to themselves or others or if they were suicidal, then force could be used, but other than that; there was nothing else - except trying via the family members ... but many times their own family members didn't want to be bothered. No, I don't hate people - I care for them, regardless of how they might be towards me. |
The word 'Hate' was meant as a stomping of feet on floor, knee jerk response, like ha ha....Sorry you took it THAT way.....I should have added an appropriate smiley ;) I was trying to keep things semi-light.
There are low-life, disgusting human beings in this world who prey on the general population...I wouldn't hesitate to give them a peice of my mind or support justice in their demise...but I wouldn't waste my preciouse energy on such people with feelings of hate. Leave them for the law to deal with. Some people cannot be helped. Pedophiles are at the top of that list, but I could elaborate. Lock em' up and throw away the key. Even God can't help some of these people until the day they stand before him. Therapists and ministers can only do so much with such individules, and it will never be enough. Further, until one has experienced true horror's and lived it personally, I don't think they have a full understanding of what they are dealing with. |
Quote:
make the decision; no one else but YOU and YOU alone. You have the decision of wanting to move forward and desiring to seek treatment or resist it. There have been what Medical Personnel have deemed 'impossible' or 'complex', but it was all because the individual wanted to be changed and took up the challenged to receive the treatment and be helped and the end result was positive. It's all in the mindset of the individual. It's true that the older you are, the more tendencies you become "set in your ways" and more "programmed" to what you think, do, et cetera. So that it's easier to treat a younger individual than it is for an older individual, because the younger individual's minds are still fresh and opened. However; the major key is - if one keeps themselves from being "set in their ways" they have a chance. And you can change, this includes habits, breaking the cycle(s) of defeat in your lifestyle (things that grabs hold of, or holds you down), and while the old adage of "You can't teach a old dog new tricks" - I don't buy it. I believe you can; I've seen it done repetitiously, not just in others, but in my own life as well. As long as we keep APATHY out of our lifestyle and keep making changes; and often from permitting that mind set from setting into our system, we all have a chance. It also keeps us in a more positive attitude, motivation and determination becomes as easy as blinking your eyes, and depression doesn't have much room because your mind set is so busy on other issues. I find that people who are in apathy and set in their ways are very high and more prone to depression and sickness to every little thing that comes by (this is not to imply to those who have illness, diseases, disorders, and such the like; for I have neurological and cardiac issues myself, but rather - I'm referring to individuals who are 100% healthy and having NO HEALTH problems), and they are highly negative in their thought process, attitude, and everything around them. You listen to them for 3 minutes - negative, negative and more negativism. Not one positive word is uttered. When you observe their lifestyle: Set in their ways, same old, same old. It never changes, always predictable. You can almost time everything according to them and not need a watch - ever! That's a good side is, they're never late, they're never early, always on time. However, the bad side is - they tend to put the cart before the horse. Their mindset is so perverted and frequently distorted, they move under presumption and assumption. They often assume or presume that someone is in reference to them (when they are not). They are easily hurt, offended, and believes the world is up against them. Thus, it begins to harbor resentment towards people, then grows to bitterness, then strife, discord, hostility, hate, and even violence if it gets that extreme. It's a process and it doesn't happen overnight, it grows, just like you plant a seed in the ground, eventually, it will bear fruit and manifest itself. They end up being loners and keep much to themselves. Many of them often end up one trouble after another with the Law, because they do not know how to do anything, all because their mindset isn't clarified and programmed (a terminology I like to use) properly. It can be done whether via counseling: Clergy/Rabbi, Psychologist/Psychiatrist - or via Hospitalization. But it all goes back to square one: The individual will want to want help. Compliance and Cooperation from the individual is needed. You can't have an individual who is haphazardly half in and half out; either you're all in or you're all out. 100% Compliance and Coopera- tion is an absolute, or otherwise its not going to be productive for that individual's own well being overall. |
sometimes i hate life and society
or i hate going outside, or downtown the woods are ok america is one lost country i think either because we eat wrong or the goverment is addicted to craeting more laws and prisons and wars usa is a dumbed down nation but some people are good like those that do voluteer work for the poor etc so all isnt bad i feel we live in ninevah or sodom or some wicked culture half the time-not that i hate gays but the greed and sins of what sodom was -bible says they didnt help poor actually and were rich scum i think god will bring judgement soon |

Some men like men, and you can't change that. Some women like women, can't change that either. Some people like both....and flip flop between the two regulary. Some try to 'overcome' this, but inevitably they can't stop their desires. Pedophiles like little children. Nothing will change that. I've never seen one of these people change. They get out of jail, and re-offend. Go back, get out, do it again. They get more dangerouse every time. I did see a man once who had his testicles removed to prevent himself from being able to act upon his sexual desire. But his desire for children did not change. He is still a sick individule. All the intervention in the world has not changed the hearts and minds of these sick (mostly) men. Cloudz...I agree that God will bring judgement soon. Anyone who has studied the bible (if this is your belief system, and actually most religions) will have to acknowledge that prophacy is unfolding before our eyes. Sure, many generations thought this too, but its more true today than it ever was. As for 'Good people' in this world, I've often thought that 'yeah, you just don't see what they are doing behind closed doors'. Anything from cheating on spouses, beating their children, stealing when no one looks, coveting, addictions and pride....we are all sinners in the sight of God. None of us can escape it. God sees all sin the same. People don't. Someone who comits murder is seen the same in his eyes as someone who commits adultry. Also, pride goes before the fall...referring to pride being sinful. God has the authority to forgive, God has the power to heal. He also gave authority to evil to run amuk during this time, and we are all victims to it at some point in our lives. I don't think age has anything to do with it. In fact, I think after years of experience, we learn self control and exercise it better than we did when we were young. Further, older people begin to turn to the God that they turned their back on in their youth. Some become bitter, granted, and refuse to change.... We have become comfortably numb as a nation, hiding in our homes, watching TV and talking on the computer....who even knows their neighbors name anymore... Alright tootsie...you started this...come on in :D |
I don`t go to church, just not a believer. Last time I went, like 20 years ago was to a father and son banquet with my FIL to humor my wife.
FIL is a Baptist, his minister no sooner started talking to the group and started knocking people that weren`t of his belief or particular brand of so called religion. I don`t need to hear it, if that`s the stuff they are preaching who needs their god? I just view it as another from of mind control, you don`t need a god to be a good person. LOL I don`t have problems with any one, except morons, some people don`t know how to act and don`t seem particularly interested in learning, even from their own mistakes. I learned at the school of hard knocks, a rough way to learn, I encourage my kids and their friends to act right to avoid the knocks. My wife and I have had kids with troubled homes stay with us, some for extended periods, one here now. I tell it like it is, the past is past, straight up, walk right or I will boot you out. Show a little respect! I caught Barrack`s ministers spiel, dude sounds like Hitler? Can`t change the world spewing trash like that, and unfortunately he is probably not the only one doing so. Are you a black? a white? whatever? leave the junk at home and become an AMERICAN! Show some respect! Don`t expect a free ride! If it`s not yours don`t mess with it. |
ever seen this movie?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sterile_Cuckoo Pookie (Minnelli) is an oddball, quirky teenager who meets Jerry Payne (Burton) on a bus heading to their colleges, which are nearby each other, where they have enrolled as freshmen. Jerry is straitlaced and stiff, and their different personality types conflict as they achieve a relationship. Pookie comes from a dysfunctional family, and is needy. She also has an attitude of contempt toward the outside world. To Pookie, most people are "weirdos." This repells Jerry, but he is attracted to her and they become boyfriend and girlfriend. The film traces the ups and downs of their relationship during their first year of college. |
My general feelings about our world....
IT'S MESSED UP!!!! Everyone's to blame and No one's to blame.... I still believe that kids on the playground could run our world better than any adult anywhere. Peace all!! http://www.yahooka.com/forum/images/smilies/peace.gif Abbie |
LOL Abbie! Ya you do have to wonder. Government bails out the smart thinkers, wall street bankers that got themselves in a jam by being dumb. The people selling the bad loans, the people with little or no knowledge of a good financial decision are left to hang.
We might be a third world nation sooner than expected. The bigger you are the harder you fall? |
people look so hostile to me
i feel usa is a brat nation and a nation with no soul am i wrong or am i just menatlly ill? people look so hostile its a wonder i dont see 50 fist fights a day eveywehre i go i feel people dont like me because ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; or because of other reasons |
It feels like our government cares more for the welfare and survival of big business than it does it's people. They encourage us to buy things we don't need and consume mass quantities in order to keep the business thriving - even if we can't afford the products. We don't take only what we need, we're encouraged to take all we can get. We're brainwashed into worshipping money and material goods, as if it's the key to happiness.
There's too much greed and corruption in both government and big business for it to have any positive effect on the people of this nation. Nothing trickles down. :( The problem is the people in government and big business are our leaders and supposed role models of the American way. The crime you see on the streets nowadays is the example they've shown us. They've taught us to do whatever it takes to get what we want and not take "no" for an answer. They've taught us to "shoot first and ask questions later." They've taught us the key to safety is pre-emptive strikes against your neighbor. They've taught us to use "shock and awe" in order to gain respect. - they claim by instilling fear in others, it will keep them peaceful. They claim war is good for the economy, therefore it's supposedly good for us. They've taught us to only care about ourselves. :( Parents used to be role models, but they can no longer spend quality time with their children because so many have become slaves to big business. Even worse, they are so stressed out they can't function properly when they are with their families. What makes all this so confusing to me is so many claim this to be a Christian nation. None of the above sounds very Christ-like to me. :( |

I realize Obama's minister may have sounded "awful" to you, but I was very upset by the harsh condemnation he received. It made me feel like no one cares about poor people of color in this nation - or has no understanding of the struggles they face in their daily lives. :( What he said may have been shocking to some, but the anger he was reflecting was the anger of people who've been treated very poorly and denied the "American Dream." His church doesn't turn away "miscreants." They are valued as much as the wealthy professionals who attend, and he acknowledges their pain. Personally, I think it's a good idea - maybe someone in the congregation with strong moral fiber can also reach them and show them the way to success in a clean way. My son has a friend who was wrongfully convicted of rape/murder, along with a few of his friends. They were teenagers at the time, but were tried as adults and sentenced to death. They spent 15 YEARS isolated on death row until some law students started looking into their case and set them free. They won a civil lawsuit, but these innocent teenagers had to spend their most formative years locked up with REAL criminals. The friend of mine I spoke of who was fighting for his life on a ventilator survived his ordeal, despite being beaten into a coma and run over by a squad car. Once he was released from the hospital, he was charged with "resisting arrest." The police deemed his treatment as using acceptable force. Oh really - tire tracks on his legs are acceptable? He was the most mild mannered man I knew. The whole ordeal traumatized and infuriated his wife - it also placed a tremendous financial burden on the family as he was the breadwinner and they had young children. Wouldn't you be angry if things like this happened to you, your child or your friends on a regular basis? Wouldn't you understand if these people felt an urge to curse those in charge? I don't condone the cursing either, but geesh, a person sometimes has to vent their anger and pain. In this country of free speech, a person should be allowed to do so. Then maybe we can start on healing these wounds. We can't ignore them forever. If we do, we'll only continue to repeat our mistakes. The people I know who hold this bitter anger/pain are well aware "war" or "fighting fire with fire" isn't the answer. The only way to heal this pain is to find a way to come together without having to amputate any limbs. We need each other. As they say, "united we stand, divided we fall." :( |
I wanted to post that the best society, the most de-stressed society, is the AMISH PEOPLE.
But then, look what happened to them last year. A crazy gunmen came and killed their children. Can you imagine, these peaceful people who don't bother anyone, and (and I really think if they had a phone in the place), kids would NOT have died. Did they learn from this experience? Did they put a phone in the new school they built?? No they did not. They put one down the road. ????? But does the world stink more now than before?? Probably, but the world always had its bad apples. You have good and evil in this world. Good is SUPPOSED to triumph over evil, but that is not always the case. I am not religious. I'm rather what you call spiritual. I would rather help someone because it makes me feel good and I truly believe it's the right thing to do, rather than because I'll go to hell or something like that. I have my own moral compass. As I matured, well, my moral compass matured. We learn as we grow, we experience life. (Trying telling that to a 15 year old). But I see more kids going to prison because they think it's perfect fine to bop some old person over the head and steal her bag, it's easier to do this, then for them to go and look for a part time job. Why?? Because they want to either buy drugs, buy the latest techno gizmo (ipod, iphone). The techno stuff is very addictive, and these kids WANT WHAT THEY WANT, and to heck with anyone else's feelings. I often am amazed when I talk to various 20 year olds. The difference in their way of thinking is absolutely mind boggling. Just when I gave up, and said "oh, they are ALL no good", Alan and I go to the physical therapy place and there are two young phys therapists there. One is 18 and one is 20. They both hold 2 to 3 jobs, go to school and are the nicest young men you ever met. One actually went on youtube to see Alan's videos. He had us hysterical yesterday. Only when I speak to these young men, do I have a taste of what young people can achieve (WHEN THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE IT). I know we are supposed to have hope for the future of mankind. But it's not looking so good from where I sit. I'm placing all my hopes on only 2 young men. Can they make a difference?? Anyone can make a difference. We just have to try. |
A fractured society with the charge being lead by big business, divide and conquer. We have gone from "we the people" to me the person, in part fueled by corporate greed, in part by the common attitude of most Americans "it doesn`t affect me".
Now it is starting to affect everyone, and favors are being called in, political contributions, past favors, the perks of office. How are we or our children going to have a better life than our parents? Isn`t that the American dream? A global economy? Our politicians are supposed to put American`s best interests as job one, maybe they will wait until everyone is fighting for one job? Does a global economy mean we ship the jobs to slave labor countries? Just to benefit the corporate exec? The loss of good paying manufacturing jobs in this country also means a decrease in the revenue stream to the fed, at some point it is inevitable taxes will have to go up. We have taken the country from a position that a father could support his family to a point were a father and mother both working are in trouble. Families have less time to spend together, constant movement to "follow the job, or work force" causing further fracture of the family network. A nation of unthinking robots too busy to take the time to do anything about it. Our lives revolve around the latest reality program and the latest "gotta have it commercial". Words do matter and unfortunately most of us only hear what we want to hear. No problems with Barrack or Hillary, not my candidate of choice but acceptable in the absense. We can`t fix America if we concentrate on things happening outside our borders, money defies gravity, it all floats to the top. |

It is about respect isn't it! The thing that bothers me about Obama is that when he responded to what the minister said (and subsequently why he still attended that church) he danced around the subject and never directly addressed the issues. I personally prefer straight talk. He should have specifically addressed the issues. I love my country; I feel very fortunate to live here. I truly hate to see people disparage this country and if they don't like it I really feel they should explore going elsewhere. I also feel it isn't my business whether people are gay or straight...whatever they are is not by choice. People do have control over their actions though and that's where we can make a difference. Our attitudes make a huge difference also. I just loved what you said about Morons. Tootsie |

I didn't see any dancing. :( His "buddies" aren't running for office. Just because he knows these people, doesn't mean he carries the same beliefs. The beliefs Obama carries shows in the way he's lived his life and the speeches he gives at the podium. Have you ever heard anything that resembles the "colorful" speeches from his minister - or anything resembling Farrakhan? No. If Obama hated America and its people, he wouldn't have pursued a career that would lead him to run for president. If he hated this country, he wouldn't WANT to be president. :o I have friends who hate white people. I have friends who hate blacks. I have friends who hate Jews. I have friends who hate Mexicans. I have friends who hate American Indians. I have friends who hate Muslims/Christians. I have friends who hate homosexuals. The list goes on. I admit, they have all inspired me - in other areas, of course (minus their hatred). Their views have also made me angry at times. Do you think I should cut off ties with these people altogether? Which one of these people do you think speaks for me? :winky: Don't you have people in your life you care for who hold differing views of the world? Would you turn your back on people in your community simply because they carry this different view based on their experiences in life? |
i think obama is just part of the new world order as bush is too he wants war too here and there
liberals want to take the guns from law abiding people and give the cops all the power for a police state liberals vote for liberal politicians and then complain social securtiy doesnt even pay the cost of living increases -they are only paying half and they are ripping off the people while they help illegal aliens and send money overseas "the government" ? why dont more people run for congress and chaneg things? the people are the government in a way and we seem to get the govermnet we deserve i sometimes think |
i cant stand listening to that obama pastor and turn him off
i think he and the american news makes my phn neuralgia worse and causes stress i cant say here on this forum what i think of him |

I have the same kind of acquaintances and friends. A variety of people. I am me, they are who they are. I like people as a whole, not interested in color and their beliefs are their beliefs to do with what they will. If what they believe in is illegal or abhorant than I'm sure we would not remain friends. I do find though that in the long run we all usually congregate with those who share our beliefs, so if someone is very bigoted I am not interested in a friendship. I make it clear I am not a racist; if they want to still be friends fine, but I don't participate in their racist rancor. I had a good neighbor in Birmingham, Alabama. She and I had much in common and spent lots of time together. I was shocked one day that when she saw a black man at her gas station she would not pump gas till he left!!! This really did change my feelings toward her...I felt sorry for her that her heart/head was so filled with hate. I did tell her (at the time) that it was senseless not to get out of the car and pump her gas. I don't think she appreciated that much. Her DH actually had his son go over to a neighbors and put a watermelon on his porch (he was only 6 yrs. old!). Imagine that. We had moved when the later incident occured. Another neighbor that I kept in touch with related the incident. Other than their terrible affliction regarding race these were nice people (if you were the right color) but we did not remain friends. Sometimes you know that a friendship is not going to work in the long run. I also believe that most people attend a church that reflects most closely their beliefs. It is impossible that Obama could not have heard of the tapes that are sold by the church with the Pastors rantings on them. I have never heard a word from Obama that counters the beliefs of those in his church. He never directly addresses them. I just know he is not for me. I think that he would find more ways to regulate and socialize our country. In the end I know that there is no perfect candidate. I expect we will just have to adjust as always. Tootsie |
those black people in ann lamotts "traveling mercies" book didnt seem like lunuitibc church people but some black woman called on some talk show yetsreday and she said she stopped going to church because they said all that stuff , not that they all are negative

Though I get what you are saying I think kids just are reflections of whatever their upbringing is .... so I think it is up to us as adults to show them the way and make it a point to take the high road. Anyway, the World has really not changed all that much. There was never a perfect time in the world. It is always a challenge. I actually think the world is closer to being a good world than a bad one. Opportunities abound. Tootsie:winky: |

I was just giving my answer/opinion to the question of what my general feeling of the world was... everyone is entitled to their opinions and I respect that.
I guess I should have clarified "kids" with an age group. I'm mostly around 4, 5, and 6 yr olds. So that would be the "kids" I was speaking of.... I see way more good between kids than bad.... Yes, there is the occassional pushing, shoving, and name calling. Just like there was when I was a kid many years ago.... truly no more no less. I also see how well they come together to work out problems and disagreements. I see far less arguing between kids as compared to adults. I believe that young kids are truly innocent... they are influenced by adults be it good or bad. I believe it is up to adults to be positive role models. I know not all adults are postive role models. I see children who are growing up in the worst possible conditions becoming some of the best citizens because of one positive role model in their life... that may be a teacher, someone at church, or just a caring neighbor. I believe this world is messed up... it could be better... it could be worse... everyone's to blame and no one's to blame... Abbie |
i knew what you meant and still agree with you
if every day u do something positive some thing simple something small, something all through jumior college and senior college every day going into class i picked up at least one piece of litter every day, nothing else it makes you feel better i still to this day will walk out of my way and pick up a piece of garbage come from cub scout days of cleaning out the chicago river here i go again thinking out loud The Trilogy @ By Frank Michael Williams !997 'The entrance' So as I walk a cool crisp autumns path A squirrel passes stops looks and he laughs I smile at him and wander on by The solitude leaving me feeling so high I love walking out here any season at all Winter, spring, summer, and yes fall The autumn leaves and the colors that shine upon us Realize that in nature, upon man there must bee some form of trust To be able to come out escape and get away Enjoying all of nature's beauty as they make my heart sway So as I walk this cool crisp autumns path I know why that squirrel back there stopped looked and laughed. 'The Exit' So as I leave the forest, path and everything behind I have to go back to reality and except it in my mind The last few steps out of this forest are the hardest ones I know Never wanting to leave natures beauty, never wanting to go I exit with the bright sunlight shinning upon my face Ahhhh Sometimes I never want to leave this place The beauty of trees, the colors and the songs of the birds Natures beauty I will never be able to put down in words Its nice to get away, leave your troubles behind But with reality, you must always keep it in your mind 'The Return' So I drive back and jump into the traffic and hustle Back to the world of sometimes too many troubles Still I drive home, yet wanting to go back to that place The place where natures beauty puts a smile on my face It is nice to get away and leave your troubles behind Yet as I drive my two children, enter my mind I care for my children a love I hold true As I drive home, I become too eager to be with both of you So as I return from natures beauty to this place I still hold the smile of autumn on my face Knowing natures truest beauty lies down this street Returning to my two children, make me feel so neat. |

Hi Abby,
I understood your meaning :) If we could take the innocence of children and add maturity...well....we can dream. It's good to imagine.... I agree with you. The world is a mess. Anyone who seriousely takes note of what is going on, not just in their back yard, but throughout the world knows we are in a world of hurt. The reality of it is overwhelming at times. There are signs all around us and anyone who dosen't recognize it should step back and pay attention. This is not said to draw fear, but to take stock. Your opinion is right on...and I bet this thread could go on and on....pick one topic...and it will draw another, and another.... This subject is SO BIG....bigger than all of us, and no one really has an answer. Who could possibly say things are okay? We are all suffering in some form or another...victims from our own design. Lets all scream! On the count of 3! 3 2 1 ARRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!! EDIT: PS: THANKS FRANK!! AS ALWAYS :D |

The news said, speaking of the world we live in, that dogs drop 60,000 pounds of poo a DAY in Anchorage. Doing my part :D EDIT: LOL!!! I'm in a swirl of smoke and listening to the blues on Public Radio....with Americas Most Wanted in the back ground LOL!! |

My Mom used to say that the world doesn't really change much. She came to America as a war bride from WWII & when she heard something bad on the news, she would shake her head & say, "The same type of people who participated in the Holocaust are now sadistic prison guards". I think she meant that there will always be bad people around. But, you never really knew with my Mother. LOL
If you look back at the world's history, it's true. Life always been a struggle & there has always been good & what I consider anyway, evil. But, I also believe we are in a different era today. I heard a psychologist on TV a few weeks ago & he said that with the world being so virtual now - internet, blackberries, cell phones, text massaging, etc., we are loosing the intimate connections that humans need to keep us in check. Kind of makes sense to me. |
