Do you listen to music and does it help?

Hi,

I can't listen to music because it reminds me of something. Even instrumental music does this. I don't keep up with new groups, because even new stuff can make me depressed.

I do remember listening to Melissa Etheridge when she was doing her loud angry albums. I used to listen to her when I was anxious and upset after work. Eventually I would relax and fall asleep on the couch before she was even finished with her first song.

In the car, to help me focus on driving, I listen to oldies -- stuff from the 70s.

When in doubt... MOTOWN!

I don't have bipolar, so please don't think I'm being a wise guy.
Part of what music does is attach memories and feelings to itself. A big part of enriching our lives.

Yep. Even this man-mountain/unhinged gorrilla named "Moose" can't listen to some music. Brings back too many memories. And even tears. But sometimes I need that. Just to let it out.:(

Then I throw on some industrial and euro dance tunes and I'm fine.:)

i listen to music twenty four hours a day.....I was on a gordon lightfoot streak for months and now i am on a tom petty streak...they don't remind me of anything so I am safe there. There are also the two Italians Bocelli and Zucchero and of course I don't understand Italian so there is no trigger there.
right now i can't listen to classical music and can't listen to Sting but for a while I was listening to him. Supposedly he suffers from depression.

My hubby is a classical guitarist.
So I hear a lot of his practicing which is very comforting.
I am easily distracted with back ground noise...can't stand to have the tv on unless I am watching it...same goes true for my work.
If I am in someones home I can't talk to them with the tv on...it is too distracting and I want to focus on them.
I guess it is kind of like multitasking...am not good at that.
It is hard for me to carry on conversations with the radio on in the car as well.

Hi,
That is great that some of you have found music that you enjoy.

I seriously studied classical music and jazz sax until I was about 20 and found out I stunk. I haven't played since.

I generally like the idea of music and like to go to an occassionally concert at my school or listen to the one of their choirs at an event and enjoy them.

When I have bought/ downloaded music for myself I end up not listening to it.

Sometimes it makes me anxious. And makes my brain feel addled and jumpy.
Don't know why.

I wish it could be a comfort and part of healing like it used to be in the past.

I listen to music a lot and it does help lift my mood, of course it's mostly Def Leppard, but I find their music uplifting most of the time. ;)

I got a little MP3 player for my birthday last December and granted I don't use it constantly, but I definitely find myself using it daily for an hour or two. :D

Def Leppard is cool -- but I don't know them very well.
Generally I do like rock from the 70s and early-ish 80s.

I am wondering if Gordon Lightfoot would have the same effect on you he has on me. Gord's Gold is wonderful. He doesn't get on my nerves and most of the time I fine him soothing. He has magic. You can get his cds on http://www.half.com so you wouldn't be investing much money.
I know music is personal but he has an impersonal quality to him sort of. He doesnt bring back memories to me.

Okay minus the song "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" I agree about Gordon Lightfoot. At work I listen to a classical music station so I don't go too nutty. In the car I listen to a local rock station. That way if I have any frustrations I can sing them out in the car.:D

I know our dau, who is the person who brought me to this forum, loves to listen to music. She has an unusually large cd collection and will play songs on the internet when whe wants to refresh her memory (lyrics, etc.).

I also like music, particularly when I exercise.

If the music makes me feel like dancing, it works great!!!!!!!

Yikes, I love that music.

Here's a song I thought of today

This song is sad and moving but I don't have strong memories that go with it because I first heard it on a TV show a few years ago (West Wing).

I heard Jeff Buckley do a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." When I hear it, I try not to listen to the words or what they might mean. The music is enough and it is lovely.

I choose to recognize the song as some kind of attempt at reconciliation of love and maybe forgiveness:

Quote:

I heard there was a secret chord
that david played and it pleased the lord
but you don't really care for music, do you
well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah

Quote:

well there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

well, maybe there's a god above
but all i've ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
it's not a cry that you hear at night
it's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah...
