Do You Like Butterflies?

Have I got the trip for you!!

We were just watching something on PBS about the Montreal Botanical Garden. They have a special event in the insectarium "Butterflies Go Free", open now through April 27. Thousands and thousands of exotic butterflies from all over the world, floating all around, landing on your hair. Wowee.

Bob and I sat here going "Look at that! Look at that one!" like bug-eyed little kids.

If you live anywhere near Montreal, you should do this!! Check out the website, and you will want to go!!!

That is so cool, B2. You can really learn a lot about them in a very short period of time! Cool pictures! Thanks!!!

I have been to the one in Victoria, BC. Our Horticulture Class went there on our class trip to see Butchart Gardens. This place was fantastic.

Here's the link...turn on your sound! We spent about 5 hours there listening to the curators tell us all about butterflies and their life cycle. We got some great photos.

They are a fascinating species!

They're so cool, aren't they? We have one here in town and I've also been to the one in Branson, MO. They even sell little butterfly garden kits now, my niece (6) got one from her grandpa (via me) for Christmas. She lives in FL and is having a ball with it.

Oh I wish I lived close by. I would love to go to that. How beautiful it would be to see all the different colors and designs floating around! I've been several times to the butterfly center here in Houston and love it, except it's in a rainforest setting and it gets so hot I have to leave for a little while then go back in. Here's a link to it... http://www.hmns.org/see_do/butterfly_center.asp

There's a small butterfly garden in Waterville OH I went to - not as extensive as either of those - but still, really cool.

I learned a lot about gardening to attract butterflies from my visit and try to add more plants for them every year.

I get tons of Monarchs of course, and lots of Buckeyes, but I grab the camera when I see the tiger swallowtails. I just love those.

:D

I went into a Butterfly house here in Aussie land a while back, and they flew around me and landed on my hands and head. They are so-o-o-o beautiful!

Thanks for that B2U.

HAPPY EASTER.

one of the many reasons I moved to Belize is that it made me feel the wonder of a child.

Blue Morpho Butterfly - Belize

butterflies are often hatching here in my yard, and I get to see them fluttering in little clusters, it's just magical.

and there are seeral butterfly farms nearby:

Chaa Creek Butterfly Farm:

Green Hills Butterfly Ranch:

there's even one right down the road from my house, The Trek Stop's Tropical Wings Nature Center:

here's two of my (non-professional-grade, sorry, lol!) photos at my house:

Okay, you'll think I am crazy for this and so did my mom until she decided to see if it was true:

It was late summer. I went to my neighborhood Lowe's to check out their "end-of-the-season" perennials. As I ventured into the shrub/bush/tree area, I was greeted with dozens upon dozens of Monarch butterflies. They were landing all over me. I could hardly see through the sea of orange.

Here, just a few feet away, were three large tables of butterfly bushes!! I just laughed as I had always been skeptical of their ability to attract Monarchs! I remember thinking that Lowes could not have paid for a better promotion than this free one from nature.

It truly was magical. I felt like a child.

I have never had much success in getting DH to take me to the aviary/butterfly house in Pittsburgh but I felt this had to run a close second!

I bought three bushes -- I dare them not to show at my house this year!!

My mom did the same thing the next day!

I used to SNATCH them just before they spun
into their cocoons... It was awesome watching
them spring forth to a new life!

They are just so beautiful and fragile, and as
soon as they hatched, and crawled on my
fingers (I was a teen) - I would then take
them outside and they would then try their
wings. Sometimes I would end up with as
many as 7 to 11 of them all hatching at once.
*laughs*

And they flew away free to a flower that
attracted them.

Its sad that they have such a short life span!

:(

I wished they could live forever and have
no known predators!

MelodyL 03-24-2008 09:19 AM

What's their life span?

I am constantly amazed at how the colors form. I mean, the various shades of blues and different hues, well, they are truly the most colorful (insect??) in nature.

Chemar 03-24-2008 04:54 PM

I have been enjoying this thread as i am a big butterfly fan .....

I have a section of my garden designed to attract them ...lots of color and fragrance, and I keep the herb garden there too for added attraction
:)

my son once bought this Butterfly Alphabet poster at a school bookfair...the guy spent years photographing butterfly wings to get all the letters and the numbers too :)

That's incredible!!!!!! The garden is lovely too, but the wings are amazing!

I have a porch that is three sides in windows w/screens. I jokingly call it my glass house, but I think I might make it a butterfly garden if we ever see another summer in MI. That would be so cool. Do butterflies poo very much?

MelodyL 03-24-2008 07:04 PM

Chemar, that's the most amazing poster I have ever seen. Do you mean, the letters are actually butterfly wings??

That is astounding.

Chemar 03-24-2008 07:29 PM

Hi Mel
yes, the letters are found in the markings on the wings. My son got the book with the poster and that has the photos of the whole butterfly so one sees the wings fully in context as opposed to just the enlargements that make up the poster.

cool isnt it!:p

and here I thought the patterns I was seeing were all in mah poor HAID ??

now, can I ask you a favor, Chemar?

can you look in your son's book, and tell me...

if you can find MY flutterby?

the thingies on its lower wings look like the #3, maybe? or a W ??

and on the upper wings, sorta like a #9, or a #6 ??

don't they?

Burntmarshmallow 03-24-2008 10:51 PM

Cayokay...I think maybe that picture is of a moth and not a butterfly and here is why I think its a moth and some fun facts too..... :)

The Difference Between Butterflies and Moths
Although butterflies and moths are very similar, they have many differences. Most butterflies fly during the day, and most moths fly during the night. The best way to identify a butterfly from a moth is to look at its antenna. A butterfly's antenna have knobs at the ends of their feelers, and the ends of the moth's antenna is either feather like or plain. Most butterflies rest with their wings held up above their bodies and most moths rest with their wings spread out flat. Typically butterflies have brightly colored wings and moths have dull colored wings. Most butterflies have slender, hairless bodies, while most moths have a fat abdomen and furry bodies. Butterflies form a chrysalis during the pupa stage of their lives. In moths, the chrysalis is normally contained inside a cocoon. Most moths have tiny hook or bristle hooking the forewings and hind wings together. Butterflies do not have this hook. Moths have existed about 100 million years longer than butterflies. So although butterflies and moths appear very much alike, there are quite a number of differences.
