DH's surgery Monday & my mom (long)
Another eventful week in my household  .
This is a long and possibly disgusting to some, type of post. You have been warned :). My husband has to have rectal surgery TOMORROW, a sphincterectomy and a fissurotomy. Go ahead and laugh:D, it's ok, he did and I did! He has had hemorrhoids for years. They haven't usually bothered him much. For the past couple of months he has been having more than his usual pain. He went to see the pcp about 3 weeks ago who did an exam and said that Tim "probably" has a rectal fissure along with his 'roids. The meds the pcp put him on did not help so he referred Tim to a gastro doc. We went to that appointment on Thursday. The gastro doc could not even touch my husband's "problem area" because he was in so much pain. He was literally sweating from it:(. The doc prescribed dilaudid for the pain along with a lidocaine compound ointment. Tim said that this hurt more than when he dislocated his elbow!! The gastro called a rectal surgeon right then and there so that the surgeon would see Tim the very next day. The surgeon didn't even have office hours on Friday but came in to see my dh. On Friday, the surgeon examined my dh and I was there. I am not squeamish and my dh is not modest . Tim had a gigantic fissure. I could see it clearly from across the room! The doc scheduled Tim for surgery on Monday, 3/24 because the pain is just unbearable. Neither doctor could even address his hemorrhoid issue at this point. Well, NOW Tim has a fever! I took his temp last night and it was 100.7. I am afraid that they will have to cancel his surgery due to infection:(. I will be calling the doctor this morning after dh wakes up. It's Easter. Why do these things always happen on weekends and holidays:confused:? My mom was readmitted to the hospital on Wednesday. She was feeling horrible and has been completely out of it 90% of the time. She is having dimentia-like symptoms. The doctors have deduced that it is from a combination of all of the meds she is on. Her brain MRI came back clear :D! Thank God. Her sodium levels were low and she was a tiny bit dehydrated. She declined her radiation treatments 2 days in a row. It is so hard being a 1000 miles away from my family at this time.:( She was released yesterday. My dad is going to force her to go to radiation Monday. This is just what we have to do since she is not herself right now. She really wanted the radiation treatments when she had her thoughts together. I really wanted to get back to Pittsburgh soon but now with Tim having surgery soon, I will definitely being staying in Florida until we get this straightened out. I feel like I am being ripped in two. ARGH!!!!! Just wanted to vent and update. Thanks in advance guys:). |
My thoughts and prayers are with your DH, Mom and of course you!!! I hope your DH's temp goes does down and please keep us posted when you can!
 |
:hug::hug: Joelle :hug::hug:
I laughed (again).....sorry! :D:D You just tell it so funny!! I know poor Tim isn't laughing right now, though. I hope things are better and you can get his temp under control. He really needs this surgery and will feel much better after it's all said and done. When it rains it pours (it seems) - and you're where you need to be right now. Your sister and brother can hold down the fort in PA and you know your Mom's in good hands medically speaking. Take care of your DH now so when you do go back to PA you won't be worried about him. Call me anytime you need to "vent" - you had me in hysterics Saturday morning and I felt bad but knowing Tim has a sense of humor about it made me not feel quite so guilty! |
Okay, I'm taking long, slow, deep breaths. NOW dh has broken out in a rash on his torso that he neglectd to mention to me yesterday!!! Called the on call doc who said no more Dilaudid!! Gave Tim 50 mgs of Benadryl and 1 of MY Lorcet per doctor's instructions. If he gets worse, I see a trip to the er for Easter. Side note to God: please, please cut us some slack. This is sooo not funny anymore. I love ya but this is getting ridiculous. :)
|
 Prayers being said for Tim (and you, too). Sounds like he had an allergic reaction - is he itchy?
You've had your share of difficulties - and it's time for a break. I'm praying for ya'll and I hope the rest of the day is uneventful. Does he still have the fever? I hope he can have the surgery tomorrow and get some relief. Call me if you need to talk - wish I wasn't so darn far away so I could help you. :( |
Hoping and praying they'll both do well, J.
|
Sheesh, you definitely have caught more than your share of the load of late, and your poor hubby...hope that fever isn't due to an infection in the fissure itself, but maybe just to a passing "bug."
Thoughts and prayers will be with you and all of your family. |
Tim's temp is down. I'm pretty sure that the acetaminophen in the Lorcet is helping. The doc said the fever is probably part of the allergic reaction. His rash is improving from the Benadryl :). The surgery is still on for tomorrow as long as things don't worsen. Thanks for listening everyone :).

Oh Joelle, this is not good. I can understand your frustration. I myself have asked God to please not add anymore until I digest what the current issues are. I am praying for you and hoping things get better. DH must be a wreck huh? I hope he feels better and no trip to the ER today. I am praying for your mom too.
I am home all day and not doing anything except cooking for the boys. Call me if you need to vent, scream, whatever. I'll even put you on the speaker so all the family can vent and scream with you OK? :D:D:D:D |
Gosh Joellee~ That's alot to deal with! I know that your DH will feel so much better having the surgery. Pain in "that" area is awful. My DS had a pilonidal cyst surgically removed last yr *in and around the same area* and he was so relieved when it was fixed.
I know your DH will do fine. I am so sorry that your dear Mother continues to have problems. She is probably doing the best that she can right now. It's hard work coming back from the surgery that she had. Please know that I am here if you need to vent. I know how hard it is for you being so far away. But, you have to cut yourself some slack. You are also doing the best that you can. Sending up prayers for your DH and Mom. take care of yourself, too! |
Sending up prayers for all three of You..Take a Deep breath...:hug::hug:
|
I hope all goes well.....
|
No fun at all, Joelle!
I spent most of last week in the hospital with my daughter. She had a tonsilectomy and so much pain. They gave her Dilaudid and she was itching so bad within a few minutes she almost tore her needle out. I guess many people have that reaction.. My thoughts are with you. Being pulled in so many directions is not a good place to be in. Just focus on where you're at right now, and take one thing at a time. Easier said than done, I know, but we're all pullin' for you! |
Oh, Joelle, You have so much going on right now. Why does everything seem to happen at once. I will keep Tim and your mom in my prayers.
|
Oh Joelle - I am so sorry for you, your mom and DH. Sending prayers and hugs your way.
|
Good luck today with Tim's surgery - will they be able to do it today? Is the temp gone? Once he's back home tonight and it's all over with he'll feel so much better. I know your boys will help you - take as much help as anyone will offer to you....don't try to do it all. It'll kick your butt later as we all know. I'll be thinking of ya'll today and praying that all goes well and Tim is on the road to recovery. You know where to find me if you need to scream!! :D

I hope everything goes smoothly today, and that the Dr. is able to do the surgery.
|
Good luck today Joelle! I can't believe what you have been given. I know God will only give us what we can handle. I am thinking you are at your limit! I will be praying for you and Tim and your Mom.
Keep us updated! |
Prayers being sent. Hope things work out ok.
|
wishing you the best.

Wow joellelee2000. Like Polar said, just focus on where you are right now with your husband. I'm so sorry your Easter was like this. I hope your DH's surgery goes well.
Here's a site with people who have problems with their digestive tract and that area. If you have questions someone has probably already 'been there, done that'. http://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=33  Kim |
Sending prayers up for hubby and for you Joelle.
|
Joelle,
Hope everything went well today. Thinking about you... |
So how did things go yesterday? Is Tim feeling any better?
|
Tim's surgery went off without a hitch!! :) He had two fissures instead of just one like the doc intially thought.
He was in ALOT of pain overnight but is doing better today. No BM yet. I am going to hide outside when he finally does ;). I'm sure the neighbors will hear him screaming:eek::eek:. Thanks again everyone :):):hug:!! |
Thanks for the update!
|
Wow! I missed this one somehow. Sounds like time you caught a break. Glad his surgery went well.
How's your mom? |

I'm so relieved for you and Tim that this is over and all went well. |
Glad you checked in Joelle~ I was wondering how things went. Your poor DH; I'm cringing at the thought of his poor derrierre. Take care of yourself too and still keeping your Mother in my prayers.
|
What's the word today, J.?
|
Yeah, did everything come out OK Joelle? ;)
*silently snickering and hiding behind Joelle outside* Seriously, hope hubby and mom are doing better. . |
It's been quite hectic here lately. Tim had a temperature of 100.5 and he has the torso rash again! He stopped taking the dilaudid on Sunday because the doc thought that he was having a reaction to it. Obviously, that isn't what the problem is. I gave him benadryl again. He doesn't want me to call the doctor !
If he isn't better today, I'm calling regardless of what dh says. He's still in quite a bit of pain too. My mom is back in the hospital again. There is so much happening with her that I don't think I can post it all right now. I'm trying to get back to Pittsburgh but until things with Tim are squared away, I have to stay here. I'm also having a hard time getting my Tysabri infusions switched to a Pittsburgh location, bureaucratic bs. I really wish--I just typed that and I'm not sure what I really wish:):). Thanks again everyone! |
:hug::hug: Joelle :hug::hug:
My gosh, sweetie, you just need to catch a break with all of this. I'd call the doctor regardless of what Tim says - if it's something that needs to be treated with antibiotics the sooner he gets on them the better. I'm so sorry to hear that your Mom is back in the hospital. You know I'm here if you need to talk - I won't call you 'cause you might be taking a nap or something but when you feel like talking just give me a call. I'm saying a prayer for you, Tim, your Mom and your whole family. I hate it that you're going through so much right now. Wish there was more I could do to help you out. |
You know I'm keeping you ALL in my prayers, Joellee~ I wish there was something I could say to make things better. It's such a tough situation for you. Just know that your Mom is where she needs to be right now, so she can get the care and attn she needs.
I DO understand how painful this is for you. Keep us posted and you KNOW that I really am praying hard for you all. Please don't be hard on yourself over this  |
Ditto on what Kitty said Joelle.

Take care of yourself and call the dr. I know how dh can be stubborn he will be grateful later. Jappy  |
Another eventful day here:rolleyes::eek:! Tim's surgery is infected ARGH!!! He saw the surgeon today and was prescribed some heavy duty antibiotics.
He won't be going back to work until he's done with the meds. He can hardly walk, he looks like he is severely bow-legged :)! Tehe. I know, I know it's not funny. BUTT it is :). He is taking his pain meds and not feeling nearly as bad as before, thank goodness. I feel like I can have a little laugh at his expense. I've been the BUTT of many jokes in my house.:D Now it's my turn, LOL.;) Can you tell I'm a little loopy today?? I haven't had a good night's sleep for a while. |
Butt its not funny :D My lips are pursed :p:eek:;)
Hope you get a nights rest tonight darlin' |
