Time to make the Donuts
No it isn't 3 am but I am up had my two cups of coffee and now am heading to TRY to make donuts. Next Saturday the company I work for is sponsoring a Bake Sale & Auction to benefit the local Fuel Assistance Program to help raise some money for them. We have got donations from local business's from anything from car washes to vehicles to auction off - even a $200 pearl necklas from the local jewlery store and an autographed Steven King novel! (He is great to the people of Maine!)
But, at the bake sale we are going to have coffee, muffins, biscuits, breads and of course donuts to sell for breakfast.... and I got suckered (is that I am calling it) into trying to make donuts so I am going to try them today to see if I can do it. So if anyone has any tips on making Glazed Raised Donuts let me know!!!!!! |
Tip #1) Have FFM make them for you, she's an old pro.
Tip #2) Buy them instead Tip #3) Check fire extinguisher's charge date Tip #4) Buy them, they're cheap, done right, and come in a nifty portable box. Tip #5) Just buy them, save yourself for your own life! |

Tip #4) Crap should of asked AMN before mixing the dough.... no box to put them in  Tip #5) AMN should know that Char is stubborn and can't buy them... has to try to fry them first! but Char is smart enough to know that Dunkin' Donuts in on the way to work just in case....:D Dough is all made - WOW to easy:eek: and they are raising just like the recipe said! Got oil ready to turn on in 20 minutes to start the frying process! 10 a.m. should have nice warm glazed donuts to eat.... yum yum (I hope) :p |
Ummmm Donuts
I have made them in the past. We were based in Michigan and during the winter every Sunday was baking & laundry day.Lots of work, the donuts, but well worth the work & wait!!
I could not find any lard to fry them in but I think I used good old fashioned white clumps of Crisco. I never attempted to glaze them just used powdered sugar sprinkled over them. [OK, I drowned them in 10X sugar!];);) Despite what my Gram used to say, warm donuts drowning in powered sugar, do NOT give you a bellyache!! My Gram used to make donuts on Faschnact Day , the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and sell dozens to almost everyone in town. Guess who was the delivery person?? We used to have donuts rising on EVERY flat surface in the house, fold out couch covered with clean sheet absolutely covered with donuts!!! A child's dream come true!! I'm sure your donuts will be a big seller, store bought donuts cannot possibly taste the same. Good Luck and enjoy those warm donuts and the holes also!! Oh gosh, now I am craving donuts, I'll bring the coffee and cold milk see you in a few hours!! |
That is a wonderful memory Risby thanks for sharing..... My mom used to fry donuts on Saturday morning when we were kids - I remember she used to tell me and my 3 older brother to make sure we leave some for Daddy when he got home at 9:00 for his break but there were times Daddy only got one or two! he of course always made a fuss with us but always had a big smile on his face and I got a tickle when he was done......
almost time to put them in the grease! I am getting excited! |
Do what I do - just get your own container from home, line it with waxed paper, stop by Dunkin Donuts on the way to work, transfer goodies from their container to yours (don't forget to chunk the DD container into the trash before arriving at work) and waalaa! Goodies from "home". :o
**hey, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do** |
I had the grease to hot for the first few but, after I turned it down and burnt the first two :p I think I did pretty well.... and so does DD.
Didn't burn the house or myself either - BONUS. |
Good girl, Char! So, how many of those cannonballs did you put away? And do you need a little barfbag yet?;)
|
Nnnnnoooooooooo...............
*flash Back* Aaaahhhhhhh......... ffm running from room hiding under bed I NEVER WANNA GO BACK TO THOSE DAYS.......... What ya'll tryin to do to me....... Hey I do LOVE to eat them though......... ffm+yeast=gas..... Congrats Char...job well done....and all lived to tell about it (and sample them) you the man....errrrr I mean you the girl!!!!!!!!!!!!! my mom didnt cook them but when Pops would work third shift he would stop at DD and bring them home to us on the weekends.... he was a great daddy! |
Next time, just offer to buy a bunch of Krispy Kremes. Easier, and people will go nuts over them. You could have the Krispy Kreme truck deliver them and you can sell them by the dozen for $6 a box.

Good girl Char! I love donuts!
When we were kids, we used to take a can of cheap biscuits in the tube. Use the vanilla bottle lid to punch a hole out and then drop them into hot oil in a pan... Put them on paper towels and roll in sugar. We thought those were the best tasting donuts we ever had. Think those tube biscuits used to be about 10 cents a can. Great memory. |
MaryAnn..........I will make those in a pinch now days too......
when its just me and sis home and we want a snack, I make those.... we call them whopping can donuts.....cuz ya gotta whopp the can on the side of the fridge to get them open lol....... I make a powder sugar glaze or cinn/sugar to roll them in....so even a creamcheese/powder sugar spread.........we can eat a whole can between the 2 of us.(thats 5 apiece lol) |

You AIN'T lived till you had those homemade ones. I'm not kiddin ya, AMN~~ they are delish.I even remember making them for my kids. And ya got to eat the holes too!
|
Ohhh yumm I wanna try that! Just the regular biscuits or buttermilk?
Joyce |
I aint kiddin a bit...........
Dont knock it till ya try it........I dont make them anymore..or havent in a long time ... were tryin to cut down.....(lol yeah I know.....yeah right?) I just used whatever was on sale..... find something bout the right size.....a water bottle lid or something works fine....poke out your holes....cook them too.......I even would twist some of mine .......... and deep fry....flip them over to cook both sides...... I used a wooden spoon to flip and then use the handle to take the donuts out.....kinda thread them on the handle and let the grease soak off on paper towels..... Then while still very hot dip in glaze.....thread them back on a wooden spoon handle and allow it to rest cross ways on top of your glaze bowl so the excess glaze drips off....... I make a powder sugar/vanillia/or lil orange juice glaze.....also sometimes add cho. cocoa, or pinch of cimmimon to it as well.....or simply roll in cin and sugar or powder sugar..... Try it....YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
My Mom used to make the biscuit kind of donuts, too. Not very often, though, so they were definitely a treat. The neighbors dog loved them!! We'd save a couple for him and take them over!!
During the holidays she would add the red and green sprinkles to the glaze or powdered sugar topping and they were so pretty. |

Char....are you going to get up at 3 am on that day and make them fresh or are ya going to make them he night before??????
I couldnt get up and do ANYTHING @ 3 am nowdays..... I do good to make it to the bathroom in the dark with my eyes closed at 3 am lol...... thinkin I might go make some whoppin donuts right now.....hee hee home alone and could eat the whole lot of them .......my coffee seems lonely all of a sudden. |
Didja make 'um? they sound good and Sissy's monkey bread is soooo good too!
NO, I am not getting up at 3am to make them - I will make them Friday night. So far the ones I made yesterday are a hit - David ate 3! |
Jappy~~ Like Kay said, just use any cheap biscuits. I was lazier than Kay tho and just rolled mine in either powdered sugar or reg sugar.
I also just used a pan on the stove and you just need enough oil for the donuts to float cuz ya flip em over anyway. They only take a min or two and make sure the oil is HOT.. You can use a deep fryer if you want to. YUMMO~ Hey Char ... see what your thread started? |
