Screen names
Part of relating to other human beings, is of course, calling them by name...now a few of us, know each other by our 'real names'....most of us know each other by our screen names, and some times I just have to laugh...my husband asked me the other day, how I came up with the mis-spelled name of a Greek mythical monster. Then he said, 'Nevermind'. He better have been cracking a joke!
I ended up with a distorted spelling of Cyclops, not because I can't spell, altho lately that has gone to pot too, not because I am a giant, I can not reach the top shelf of my cabinetry, not because I have one eye, nor a bad disposition, (well, not most days anyway), nor because I enjoy dining on ancient Greek mariners (if one happened into my life, I would have better use for him than to eat him)....I got it from the fact that I used to spend my spare time on a bicycle, hence, Cycle and that I used to run, but now I lop. So I covered two thirds of what used to be my passion in life, doing sprint triatlons, by becoming a distorted, defunct, mythical creature that cycle-lops. (This is one of those 'adjusted down dreams') Kind of 'what is left from what was' concept. I am OK with it, because, as hubby points out, 'Hey, at least you did it'. It is truly, one of those things on my list of things to do in life, that we all should probably have....a few of those things got crossed off as just not practical anymore (kiteskiing), but, I got a fair amount of them done, at least once. There is a Dr. Seuss book about the places you'll go and the things you will see. I can't remember which little ditty that was in. Getting to grandmotherhood is one more thing I want to do, but, hey, I don't want to pressure my kids, and given only one is anywhere near marriage, this is a not just a goal I can set out to accomplish on my own....I guess my goal is hanging around long enough to get to know a few grandchildren, when ever they happen to arrive. This IS one of those things that keeps me 'plugging on' right now....as is the fact, that I will likely be able to ride my bike again, when the glaciers receed. I want to get to the point where my garden is no longer a 'starter patch', but reliably productive. I would even like to go back to work again, yeah, crazy I know....I have a few bodily function that would have to behave themselves first. I can clearly see how some people's screen names came to be, by knowing a bit about them personally, or by avatars posted....but if any one else wants to come out of the closet and share how they got their screen names, I would love to hear about it. Of course, don't disclose identity or say anything you'll regret. The thought processes that go into what we 'christen' or ritually name ourselves by whatever belief system we have, is, no doubt interesting and may be, for those comfortable enough to share, kind of fun to disclose. Any one game?? |
mrsD is from mrsdoubtfyre
I wanted my ID here spelled mrsD ...but I was out of town, and had my son
make it for me (so someone else would not take it) and he forgot to capitalize the "D". mrsdoubtfyre comes from the movie...very loosely. I really liked that movie and felt that the character by Robin Williams really accomplished quite a bit as an alter identity. I really didn't pay that much attention to the cross dressing, as it didn't interest me in the way some people react to it. I am fairly open minded. And besides, men have been playing women on stage since Shakespeare.. Well, so then the first time I ever used a screen name on the net and I just was flamed endlessly. Especially by men. I was just naive and didn't understand how aggressive and mean the internet can be. All the trolls and people who lie typically reacted negatively, so it became a barometer of sorts for me to highlight who to IGNORE... :p So I used to say: I am a woman and not a man in drag! LOL that usually shut them up. But I occasionally get spam in my emails directed towards men...male enhancement stuff. Then as the years passed (since Jan 2000) people started to call me mrsD. So I changed to that for here. I have mrsdoubtfyre in my signature if you look closely, so that anyone who searches my old name on an engine will find me here. It has remained fairly unique on the net, all these years, much to my surprise. I changed the spelling to not infringe on any trademark, and keep lower case because I don't care much for ego-type things. At one time I would have changed it if I could, when the flaming was terrible. But over time, I have begun to like it now, sort of like an old comfy pair of shoes! :p Since I like to shake things up now and then and get people to start thinking...the name has taken on a new cast for me lately. I sort of like to instill some doubt-ful thinking where I feel we have been bamboozled by the media, and medical community. Often the truth, can be found to be very different from what we expected! In the movie...Robin Williams makes the name up by reading the paper, while applying for the nanny position. I sort of liked that, since my mother named me from the paper when I was born...a little girl surviving a fire. So my real name came that way. |
A Dahlek is
A 'creature' from the longest running science fiction TV show Dr Who. It was originally spelled 'dahlek' - of late it's been changed to 'dalek'....As Mrsd implied, you cannot imagine the spam I tend to get.
I chose it because w/my PN I wanted a name that was perversely positive. Dahleks scream hysterically to 'EXTERMINATE! OBEY!' and the like, and that's how I've felt about my PN. Here are some pics from the 'official' Who website. And NO I bear no resemblance at all! None whatsoever. http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/galle...ks/index.shtml I'm not that short, stodgy, cranky and I move faster! - j |
At the risk
of stating what may be obvious, "Alkymst" is a variant on the spelling of the old medieval "Alchemist". The monniker is most apropos since I am or was a chemist who spent ~40+years in various hoods trying to convince Mother Nature that I really knew what I was doing - She never caught on, not only was I on the wrong page in the wrong book but my book was in a completely different language, hence, I never did find the philospophers stone to transmute lead into gold but I certainly transmuted many an organic compound over the years, some more successfully than others.
I don't look as much the part since unlike Merlin and other Fantasia-like wizzards my beard resembles steel wool once it gets long, not the free flowing "wizzardly" image that most people think of. |
I have no clue why I chose this name. When I joined I was in the midst of vicodin worthy pain and sort of lost. I want to change it because you guys are like family but don't want anyone confused. When I get a pm I tell people my real name which is Gina. I always thought if I would have a child which I don't want now I would name it after my gram either Daniella or Daniel so maybe why I chose that. Anyhow I am Gina nice to re meet you all.

I wish I had been more original like the rest of you. The name is my own name of course. However, the age has changed...oh, well. :) ;)

My screenname's derivation is fairly simple--
--inasmuch as Glenn is my real first name. (A lot of you know my last name as well--I'm one of those people who hides in plain sight on the Internet .)
The "taj" part takes a bit of explaining, though. It started when I was studying for my Bar Mitzvah (the Jewish "manhood" ceremony, which mostly involves eating and the parents of the boy in question doing everything they can to impress friends/relatives with ostentation). I had a hard time explaining to people how/why an agnostic was going to have such a ceremony, and I began telling people that I was still Jewish, at least in the abstract. Taj became an acronym for "the abstract Jew" and I have used it rather tongue-in-cheek for several decades. (There are several other stories surrounding the designation--some of them might even be faintly interesting--but that's the basics.) |
Hehe--need I explain darlindeb--Deb is my name, and of course, I am a darlin!!! Hey, heyjoe, you out there, I'm a darlin, aren't I?????:p Seriously, I originally, in MSN messinger, was debd25 and a man who was and still is very important to me, called me darlin, so soon, I became darlindeb. When I became a member of AOL, my sign-in name became, darlindeb25. As with many of us--one name is much easier for me to remember, so I use it in many forums!
In my celiac forum, many people from this area (Long Island) have asked how to get to my celiac support meetings, once there, they will walk up to me and say, "You're darlindeb, aren't you, I recognize you from your picture online!":D It's great meeting people that way! |
Got the nickname Moose in the Air Force.
Twisted into a dinosaur. Like a balloon animal.:D |
My screen-name comes from a beautiful valley where my in-laws live on their farm:-

Hi all! Velly intellesting reading your screen name origins.
Twinkletoes came about b/c my toes were numb when I was trying to think of a name. I think I remember a cartoon character with that name. Once I tried to find a picture, but never could. |

:Off-Topic: Hello fellow Aussie, but no! I haven't been there. Sounds like they live up in the Blue Mountains! Lived and married in Melbourne, and have done the touristy thing through most of Victoria. Somehow, we missed this spot. Have travelled and lived in lots of states, but recently settled in Tassie. |
Well..... mine came from one of my grandkids. I forget which one (of the 8)
but it was an earlier one, cuz I've been using it for a while. I was given a compliment for something I'd done, maybe it was sing a song or maybe it was after opening a present, but I was told "Zada.... that's 'nide' (meaning 'nice'). Maybe the toddler had a cold, maybe it was just 'toddler speak' I dunno. OH, BTW, "Zada" is Yiddish for grandfather. I just couldn't wrap my brain around being a grandpaw (and called 'grandad, or paw, paw, or 'gramps', etc) in my middle 40's, so I adopted the name that I called my maternal grandfather. It seemed to soften the blow, somehow. ;) It seems that 4 letters was too short for web sites and I had to have 6 characters or more, so the '44 is my birth year, 1944 - hence 'nide44'. It seems odd when others reply to my posts and call me 'nide' because I do sign all of them with my real name "Bob B.", and really prefer to be called Bob. |
Well, those were great stories, and made my day, today, which I really needed...I hope we get more stories, and more insight into the 'charcters' we really are at heart.

Boring Name!
A friend once had napkins printed for me with all my assorted "nicknames" from over the years - "spits (water fights) - grace (lack thereof) - fats (hair) - moose (had a run in with such a critter at Yellowstone once I wont forget) - trouble (kinda obvious, if not causing it, in it) " - but I went with the most boring thing of all - initials!!!!!!! I rely on the net so much and my tiny little brain to remember all the passwords etc... that I figured heck - why make this one difficult!!!!!!!!
Boring eh?????? |
Yorkiemom
What else could I be with a passel of Yorkies running under foot?
Originally a crew of 6, now sadly down to a crew of 3. BUT, Miss Minnie, my beloved miracle dog, is still continually wowing the vet with her ability to rise above the problems associated with kidney failure... There is one other person on this board, who is well acquainted with this breed and the special love they bring to their owners... Actually, you don't own these dogs; they own you... Perhaps he will post here. A clue? He lives across the big water... :) I wish I had one to send him, in hopes it would help him feel better. My real name is Cathie and I live in the suburbs of Dallas... Cathie |
Oh how I wish I could stick my dogs in a coffee cup! Unfortunately, I have to nag for every one in the house to keep the toilet seat down. A Labrador is a wonderful dog for a 24 year old marathoner. I must admit, they are awfully smart....but the big one's head barely fits in the toilet and one of these days I expect him to be wearing the seat as a collar. Lord, what did I do to my life!!??:o
I have to laugh, one of my old names was Buzzard (for buzzing sensations) and also 8crow, for having stuck my foot in my mouth. I have had a few more complimentary screen names, but I hate to give away too much, LOL... These are great, keep them coming! |
My brother Gary Richard was 18 months older then I,could not say my
first name..So when I came home from the hospital,I became to all family members, the neighbors, teachers and so on as Shiney sue, that brother always got his way..my first day of school and since the teacher ask to see a copy of my birth certificate, my dad told the annoyed women wnen they unpacked it she would be the first to see it..She stopped asking and until I was married i was Shiney Sue.. |
What a fun question! Thanks.
My wife and I are ardent birders. We're not into lists and fancy binoculars and camaras, but are into the beauty, liveliness, intelligence, alertness, freedom, diversity, and especially the breathtaking flight of these amazing living dinosaurs. As part of our "birding", we have six bird feeders* in our back yard, and have planted a bird and butterfly friendly garden.
I guess Wings is a wish and goal, to be metaphorically like the birds we so admire. It turns out that Wings is a fairly common Username throughout the web, so I needed to add something to use this same ID on many websites. 42 is the year I was born. Ebay even had another Wings42, so in that case I used Wings + my zip code. Wing42 (no "s") was a typo that the moderators couldn't or wouldn't fix for me. Adding the "s" isn't worth setting up a new account. * Two tube grain feeders, one platform feeder, 1 goldfinch niger seed feeder, and 2 liter-sized hummingbird feeders. The tube and platform feeders attract a few rodents. We enjoy watching the two species of mice, two of rats, and one type of ground squirrel like any other wildlife as long as they stay outside of the house. |
not original and misleading...
I'm afraid I gave everyone the opinion I was a silver lady or a real old one with gray hair. By now you all know I make jewelry and use a lot of silver (gad! the price now!). And I'm not gray I'm a firey redhead. And Silverlady sounded like someone Sir Galahad would rescue and I wanted rescuing from the pain of this stuff. .....where are you Sir Galahad!!!!!:p

Not like the cross-dresser that my name connotes! LOLOLOLOL :yikes: |
Oh, no one associated Silverlady with gray hair! Your avatar says it all....besides, Anderson Cooper has gray hair, and he is pretty cute, at least in my book.:p Yes, I know he is younger....I can dream. Some one will pop my bubble and tell me he isn't 'my type'. (For being sick, there are still some parts of me that work, I'll be darned! Wonders never cease.)
LOL, he is probably gonna read this, as they have all those internet reporters who just sit and watch the net all day squeal on me for saying this....hey--THAT is the job I need...and I could move to a warm climate! I wonder what HIS screen names are.:D Maybe it is Sir Galahad? Robinhood? Sir Lancelot---oh forget that one, it sounds too painful. |
Silverlady to you sell your jewlery. My friend sells hers on the net. I am wondering who Anderson Cooper is?I like this lifter post.

I do sell my jewelry. I've sold almost everything I've made. I make it for a high price boutique, a large beauty shop, and this week when I took my watch in to my local small jewelrystore to have it repaired, they asked me if I'd be able to do some work for them. I stay behind at all of the locations because sitting is painful and darn...you gotta sit to make jewelry. My husband bought me a photo cube and camera for Christmas and Kmeb was so sweet..she sent me a tripod because I needed one. Seems she had an extra. The light here hasn't been strong enough since I got everything to be able to use it. I did make a few photo's and will try to figure out how to post them someday. It all keeps me a little bit sane. (notice...a little bit) Some day I'll make my own website and sell from my studio. But getting out to take the jewelry to the places I sell it gives me my only social contact and it is very enjoyable. I climbed the stairs today twice and the pain in my sit down is excruciating tonight. I'm beginning to think it is all connected to soft tissue in the knee and groin area. My knee (replaced knee) has a spot on it that has turned purpley red. Really weird. Like a vein broke. But it does it repeatedly in the same spot. Anyway back to subject...I am really as Glenn says ..verbose...tonight. Thanks Mrs. D for thinking I'm classy. Cyclops....dream on girl!! I've enjoyed this thread so much. Billye |
The Bionic Woman
OK, my name Jaime S, is shortened from Jaime Sommers, the Bionic Woman!
She was my childhood hero, and these days I like to dream that I'm a "strong" woman like her, when I'm far from strong in reality! I've used this name for a few years now. Oh, I wish I could get replacement body parts, (don't we all!) and having added strength would be a nice bonus too! lol :p ~Jaime~ (Jan) |
Anderson Cooper is a reporter on CNN, who is 'prematurely gray or white haired'. He is a young man, and I think very nice looking.
|
Billye - Cycl.
Unfortunately poor Silverlady's avatar made me guess two years ago what her hobby was - and after an IVIG nurse brought beads one day to entertain us both during the infusion - I relentlessly asked her a multitutde of questions about her hobby - and shes a great teacher - its a creative outlet shes given me back and I'm loving it and Silverlady - from the pix I've seen - is awesome at making her creations!:)
And yes C - Anderson Cooper is welcome in my house any time!!!!!!! |
:D Eh, I see that not all parts of you are broken either,:o:p:D

Monica is actually my name de Lara is a lastname in Mexico, it's not my real last name though, but i use it everytime i don't want to say my real last time.
I use it because i would go to a beauty salon for years. For some reason, they used to call me Monica de Lara, i corrected them at the beginning but then i realized i actually liked "de Lara", so i was always Monica de Lara for them. |
Well nothing interesting here, my screen name is my real name, i guess i have no imagination like the rest of you :D.
Brian :) really :D |
Sorry C
Besides Tony ,I am mad for Anderson Cooper..Do you every watch cnn,
on channel 32 in Mo. Larry King has his show on cnn. Just letting C know what I think and what a wonderful job. Ok i think Lou Dobbs looks like a Teddy Bear a very independent one. Wing you were born in 42, I would of guessed that was your age,I love Birds as well, what a wonderful sight. Glenn I became Jewish,so my children would be raised in that faith,it was not easy..For me,much easier for the children, but it made my in-laws happy. This has been interesting thanks again. C Tony you could of been anything and you turned out to be handsome...:) |
I wasn't very imaginative either.
As a fellow Aussie, my screen name is some-what self expanatory! |
