Riverwild 03-25-2008 08:11 AM

Sorry! I worked all night, slept all day and only had ten minutes or so on here last night!

Not rubber boats, hard boats! Canoe Races, first of the season, they start Saturday. I'm not sure if I can make that one, I have to fix my canoe. Both my thwarts are split and even though it's good enough for lake boating, I want solid wood on the river.

I am going to do my best but I think I may end up doing one of the later ones.

I'll let you know when I know more!

FlyFishin Momma 03-25-2008 08:14 AM

uuummm her WHAT's are split?????

I am so impressed! Please, please, please give details when you know. I might have to take a trip up to Maine this weekend! I'll be the one starting the "wave" as you go by!:You-Rock:

Riverwild 03-25-2008 04:11 PM

OK guys!

I got up today and it was too late to go hunting thwarts, I will have to wait for Thursday after infusion to do that while I am in town. I think the most excellent Hamilton Marine may be able to help me out with what I need.

So today I tore open my closet and went through all my gear! I have it stuffed in an old duffle bag, and figured the best thing to do was go through each piece one by one and do a survey. I had put it all away three years ago, and haven't had anything out since.

The drysuit: I have a Kokatat dry suit, front entry. It has a waterproof zipper that goes diagonally across the chest. You step in and zip from left waist to right shoulder to close it...

Anyone know how to lose 30 lbs in three days? I looked like a big blue sausage :(. I stuffed the chest in far enough to close the zipper, but I think one is still supposed to be able to breathe when it's zipped! I tore the neck seal and I guess I forgot about that too, so before this woman can wear THAT drysuit, it's gotta be fixed and I gotta be fixed! I have an extra seal, just need to put in a few hours of time and work on it, but my end will take more than a few days...

Fortunately, the standby wetsuit still fits, but it's NOT pretty...

Found Gore Tex paddling pants that WILL work (thank you LL Bean!) so with some polarfleece (and if it's nice out) I will wear these instead of the wetsuit. I am not planning to be IN the water, rather just ON the water.

Lifejacket is in excellent shape, no nicks, rips or tears. All necessary equipment is still attached. Knife, whistle and 'biners are all there!

Throw line is in good shape, no breakdown on the rope! Always a good thing!

Found the polarfleece socks and the wetsuit booties. Still fit, don't smell. Bonus! Found polypro union suit, decided that old polypro IS supposed to die at some point. For those of you who know about old polypropylene, it used to pick up body odors after the first wearing, and keep it forever.

It's true  It's nasty. I threw them away.:winky:

The only thing I haven't found yet is my airbag for my canoe. It's a giant airbag that fills the middle section of the canoe to displace water if said boat gets filled with water. I have to go deeper into the closet for that, I think, and if it's not there, maybe the other closet or the garage...eek.

I am praying for good weather. We are having some snow tonight. The weather this a.m. also said something about snow/rain Saturday. This first of the races has been cancelled because of weather many times. No runoff, no race. WE need some actual above freezing weather for a few days to get the water running! I drove by the race start line over the weekend and it was slow, with ice on the banks and edges of the river.

We shall see!:winky: BTW, the drybag always ALWAYS has a roll of duct tape in it DM! (that and a ziplock with first aid supplies and a dry lighter and my cigarettes!)

KarenMarie 03-25-2008 05:47 PM

Glad you threw away the old poly - how much ice on the river - understand there is a LOT of snow at Moosehead - ice not great - anyway start digging through the garage and maybe you'll lose at least 10 !!

AfterMyNap 03-26-2008 11:28 AM

LOL, RW, I can help you drop 30# in about 2 minutes, but I think it's a felony and we'd need a lot of drop cloths!

tovaxin_lab_rat 03-26-2008 01:37 PM

Cutting her hair wouldn't help her get into her drysuit AMN!

:p:eek:;)

Yer soooo funny!!!:D
Shaving my legs DID help me get the drysuit on, just not enough!:p No one is cutting the hair on my head either! I braid it to get it outta the way when I paddle. I hate drowning because I choked on my own hair!

Just heard that the race is on, despite the snow we had last night and today. The weather report says it's gonna be warm out (40s) for the next two days, so maybe there will actually BE some runoff!

Tomorrow and Friday are repair days, and if all goes well, maybe a pre- race paddle on the river to check it out. I am always up for the advantage paddle, especially if it's nice out! I have to take the man to show him where the take out is anyway.

I feel the excitement building, just to GET out there! When I talked to Char last night, we figured out that the last time I worked on the river was 2003. The last time I paddled whitewater was 2004, so it's been a LONG time. I used to get soooo excited at this time of year, knowing it would all be starting up soon. Now I am just excited to even be planning!
It's someplace I thought I wouldn't BE again in my life.

What it looks like out my window today...not looking good for fair weather boaters. I got the thwarts, just have to cut them to size and screw them onto the boat. I'm just not sure whether I want to go out and freeze my rolls off tomorrow! :( I'm trying to psych myself up for it, telling myself that when I get out there it WILL be fun, once I get past the cold and spazzing legs! More to come after I dig out the saw and the drill...

I love that pic! I just love the snow...especially when it is somewhere else that I don't have to shovel! It reminds me of my snowmobile trip!

Good luck if you do get out tomorrow! If not, let us know when the next one is.

AfterMyNap 03-28-2008 11:50 AM

You at my house? We got the living whitemare here, too. We're all sick up and fed with it and we're not gonna take it anymore. I nominate RW to do something about this right now!!!!!!!

Git yer leetle butt out there and go down that river, dangit! We need our vicarious high and you're it!!!!!!!!

Riverwild 03-28-2008 12:35 PM

Still snowing... Still looking for any saw..even an old logging saw at this point...we have at least ten saws...where ARE they???

SallyC 03-28-2008 12:42 PM

Joyce must have borrowed them all to make that dang drawbridge over our "river serene"..:D

Riverwild 03-28-2008 08:47 PM

Ok...I am calling it off.

It's still snowing, and here's the National Weather Service bulletin from tonight:

.TONIGHT...MOSTLY CLOUDY. A CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS IN THE EVENING...
THEN SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY OVERNIGHT. SNOW ACCUMULATION OF AN INCH
OR TWO POSSIBLE. LOWS IN THE LOWER 20S. NORTH WINDS AROUND 10 MPH.
CHANCE OF SNOW 60 PERCENT.

.SATURDAY...PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE LOWER 30S. NORTHWEST WINDS
15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH.

I really wanted to do this. I am not willing to suffer hypothermia just to prove that I can still do it. There were a few brave souls at the bridge when I went to look at the water level. They were there for the same thing. We all discussed the whole situation and were mostly of the mind that if it wasn't called off, it should be.

I vote for warmer weather. I'm either getting smarter or I'm old. :Sigh:

Koala77 03-28-2008 08:58 PM

Wise move RW. I hope you're not too disappointed, but when I looked at that picture with so much snow around, I thought it was pretty, but far too cold for what you have in mind.

The weather forecast clinched it. Much too dangerous right now, but I'm sure there'll be another chance when the weather warms up a bit.

Thanks for keeping us up to date.

AfterMyNap 03-28-2008 09:06 PM

It's the right thing to do.

As much as I want you to participate I am glad to hear you are waiting. I got worried last night when you didn't answer...... now I can go to my auction and not worry about my River Queen! ;)

There are plenty of races all spring and you will get there - we know you can still do it!

Thanks Char!

I didn't get your message until this mornng. The man took me out for a snack wrap last night for a consolation prize and we did grocery/drug shopping instead.

I think I overdid trying to get the boat in shape, my hands are tingling and keep cramping up, but the boat is ready for the next time!

I'm actually sitting here soaking the hands in paraffin baths! I have two of those hot wax bath machines and I have one for each hand today! I think if I had paddled, my hands would have locked on the paddle shaft and would have had to have been pried off at the end of the race.

We went down to watch the brave souls launch this morning and it was a snowy, icy, muddy mess at the launch site. People and boats sliding down the bank out of control, people falling into the water...

I didn't miss that!:p

KarenMarie 03-29-2008 01:47 PM

Thought it would be pretty messy up your way - I still say wait for summer and do something shorter - like Socatean !
