hyper from opiate based meds

Just wondering if anyone gets anxious or wired from the opiate family. I sure do. I'm wired currently from Ultracet/ Tramadol(generic).
I haven't heard of others with a hyper reaction out side my family. It has affected my mom, and cousin.... My Grandmother would go freaking nuts from Morphine during various hospital stays!!

If you look up the side effects of Ultracet/tramadol, nervousness and agitation are two of the common side effects, as well as inability to fall asleep or stay asleep.

You can click on the drugs link at the top of the page for info. ;)

I never could understand why they make pain meds that have side effects like loss of sleep. When I am in pain I'd rather sleep through it but so far every pain med they have tried has kept me wide awake and still in pain.

Jerry, I feel you. I wanted to post this survey to get an idea if people like you and I are the exception to the norm. But not many people have voted so my theory is still a mystery :?

Thursday,

Count me in! I always had plenty of nervous or excess energy when my doses of Vicodin were higher. Then for years I was at a very low dose and that didn't happen. But now I am on the Fentanyl patch 12mcg and have TONS of energy and nervousness. But the latter only lasts for about a day. I thought I was weird. You would think most people would feel sleepy or sedated but I don't EXCEPT for when I first put it on...then I will get sleepy. But whoa watch out for the second day...it is nervousness but not anxiety.

2 tabs of Vicodan i get wired, pain free but short tempered so i rarely do it unless pain is unbearable,I cant sleep either so I take a Lunesta 3mg..:)

Does anyone know WHY this is? I know the SE's and nervousness and anxiety are usually listed. But WHAT is happening and WHY? You would think you would be more sedated. But I never am...EXCEPT for when I take something new for the first time. But when I was taking Vicodin 4-6 a day after surgeries, I felt fine with all kinds of energy but not nervousness. On this Duragesic patch I feel extremely nervous.

opiates

affect other neurotransmitters in the brain. Research is just still looking at this issue.

For example, opiates increase stress responses.

and this article is about serotonin:

I have been taking oxycodone for pain and yes, they do give me energy. I have asked my friends who are also taking pain meds of the opiate family and they all agree.

I would vote yes on your poll but stupid me, I don't know how.

You're not stupid at all, it's closed now. Can't vote. ;)

As for the subject of the poll, I don't really feel like I have a lot of energy from the hydrocodone I take for pain, but then I tend to feel fatigued and tired but in much less pain with it in my system. A lot of that I believe was due to the lack of sleep I had due to untreated sleep apnea, which I now have a CPAP for and use nightly to help get the sleep I need. :)

I have always been wired and hyper on opiates. (I believe this is part of the reason they become addictive for some people.) But then, I get wired and hyper when I take Benadryl! I always thought I was just weird! They also make me very, very aggitated at higher doses but so does Phenergan. It is very strange how meds affect different people in different ways.
