GOOGLE Maps Feature

Today, my lovely wife showed me a feature on Google Maps that just absolutely floored me. We all know that you can get: aerial images, street maps, topographic maps and Google Earth 3-D images....but did you know that you can actually get an image of your own home....from the street view?

It is as if someone just stood in front of my house and took a picture of it!

Amazing!

It will be a great tool for my reports, but it is really odd to see your own home from the street. Heck, the image is only 6 months old!

The street view option is very cool! I love google earth!

Koala77 04-12-2008 11:56 PM

I must be doing something wrong. So far I've only been able to get the front of one house up. Every other address I've tried including our own house, just shows an arrow pointing to the house position in the street.

You have to actually download the Google Earth program onto your computer to do the street views.

It's kind of neat looking, but a bit creepy too. They have people that drive around in cars that take pictures from the street view. Scary that they've done such large sections of the planet so far.

Thanks Erin. I did see the download thing and thought maybe that's the reason why mine isn't working.

Creepy is right. It's not really a good feeling to know that some-one has driven past and photographed the house that is both personal and dear to you.

I will have another look at that download program later. Thank you.

Whoa...

This is wild to say the least. I have been playing since reading Vic's post! Sometimes technology blows my mind.

Besides making me dizzy, this is so cool, yet creepy as Koala said!

Thanks Vic!:)

oh you don't have to download it..

just go to "Google maps Street view"
and zoom in to a city and the extra Street view button should show up by the other buttons.

A little man icon will show up and if the streets are lined in blue then you can drop the icon in those places to look at the street view.
sometimes you have to double click for a new box to pop up also zoom in and zoom out
for moving around just grab and hold to drag it up / down/ side to side
click on the arrows to go forward or back

ahh found the help section-
[ Blue outlines show roads where street view is available.
This icon shows where you are on the map. The green arrow points in the direction you're looking. You can drag the icon to navigate to a different location. You can also just click on a blue outlined road to go there.
Drag the street view to look around 360°. Use the arrow buttons to navigate down the street. You can also use the arrow keys on the keyboard.

]
how they do it- special multi camera -

Not working for me! That's what I have been doing, but I can't see anywhere to get a "street view"!

I type in the address, and it shows up with the street and an arrow pointing to the house, but that's it. I do have an option for satellite, elevated terrain type stuff, but no street view :(

Oh well! I guess if I want to spy on other people I'll just have to download the goods.

:::::::::looks around:::::::::::: :Wave-Hello:I have had earth google on my pc for around two yrs, maybe longer.even found the house I grew up in as a child in the city before moving out. have found the great wall of china and stone hedge, the pyramids and naza (sp?) lines down in peru, i believe. eiffel tower, london tower, picadily circle, you can check out the grand canyon, hoover dam, mount rushmore, its pretty cool beat surfing the spam or leech highway, i mean the web

theres a new one unfortunately i was half out of it when i heard about the companies name that is doing same as goodle earth and the realtors are using these products to help sell houses and neighborhoods

pretty sure i found one for a surface of mars too just not sure lost a lot on our main system here a few months back a lot of links and pics,

Hi Anne,

It could also mean that they have not fully mapped your street yet with the street view cameras. They actually mount them on a truck and drive around neighborhoods. Must have taken them forever. The guys at google said the founder wanted someone to be able to see the route when mapping directions so they could actually see landmarks.

A friend of mine had a fire in his house. The exterior was pretty destroyed. They went to Google maps street view and downloaded the view and were able to reconstruct it.

I believe that if you are a business that you can block out the google maps feature if you want.

Anne,

One of my IT friends told me that Google is only 30% into the project. Many places have not yet been photographed. Additionally, Google has had difficulty in accessing gated communities and private property.

I entered my address last week, and it came up 4 houses down. Actually, I was glad to see that they were off on their addressing as anyone with my address could identify my house, even from Tasmania :D LOL!!!

The technical world we live in gets more amazing every day. They took the picture of my house just after a rain storm last fall and the sky is pink and beautiful and I'm glad I had mowed :p

I tried it with google earth but it's not the same Erin, at least not in Anchorage yet.

Just go to google search and enter your address. Thats it. Your house, or one close to it will show up :)

freeinhou 04-13-2008 01:06 PM

Yeah - creepy...

Obviously somebody stood at the entrance to our driveway and did a 360 degree panoramic shot...

I can almost make out the license plate number on my truck in the driveway...

I don't know if I like this yet

I think that is the one Google is getting sued over. THey had it on the news the other night. Talking about being able to see people in their yards, vehicle license #'s. If you had a pool in the backyard, you could see the people in the pool.

Major invasion of privacy.

Googles response was "gee, we can take you off it"
Guess it wasn't the right response, because they are being sued over it.

Your DW and my DH must be working together Tom~ :D

He showed me our house on that site before.

*I think AMN is working for them and taking the pics* :D

Is the imagery real-time?

Street View imagery is not real-time. Most of the images were taken in the past year by specialized vehicles driving on public streets.

Oh and here's a Microsoft version of a similar thing- still in the beginning stages

Come to think of it AMN did have a camera on her scooter. Are all the pics scooter height?:rolleyes:

We checked this out a few months ago, but the pic of our house was pretty old. We couldn't tell exactly, but it was before the new fence at least - and we put that up in 2000. This could be the same pic the realtor's used to list the house for all we can tell, lol.

If it were a better shot we'd know, because we painted shortly after we moved in.

What I found most peculiar was there were no cars in the driveway - I can't recall the last time that happened.

weegot5kiz 04-13-2008 09:44 PM

yeah their data bank is old a store my son works at the gas station isnt there and its been there for 5 or 6 yrs now, Like I said I use it to find places of nature all over the world, the pyramids were cool the sphinx, great wall of china and you can see some of the ring circles throughout england and the hills with the carvings on them, I really could care about the house i am nature history freak, thats were i have fun with it

sugarboo 04-14-2008 09:42 AM

Yeah Frank, I like to travel around Africa and look for villages and go to popular sites like the White House or Rome....I can spend hours on Google Earth...what a cool tool :D My house on Google Earth is just a space shot and my forest is still in my back yard...we have since cleared it. Wonder if they will ever update it?
