Flour and Rice rations
Okay My MIL and Her sis have either flipped or I have missed something...
granted they are older ladies but..........they went to Aldi's yesterday and got 10 bags of flour and 5 huge bags of rice. They said they heard there was going to be a ration started on them....they are going to buy that same amount a week until it starts......okay I kinda freaked out..... Then my Sister whom lives here called me this am and said she saw it on tv and that wal-mart was saying they were going to put limits on the flour and rice they allowed a person to buy.....(shes kinda cook-coo) so I dont even know to believe her.....) So has anyone else heard of this???????? Should I join the Girls in the stashing mission or should I nip it now so they will stop the insanity?????? |
let me go find the link...we had a long discussion about this.
|
it was on stumble inn:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread44249.html some good links about it too. |
I'm not sure what Wal mart's deal was, but I heard it started at Sam's club. some restaurants were buying extra thinking the price was going to go up any second, and Sam's was running out.
so Sam's limited them to so many 80lb bags per day. Then Walmart started limiting too, because they would get their limit at Sam's and head to Wal mart and use up all their supply too. It was hoarding for the price by restaurants that started all this as I hear it. I don't like rice so I could not care less if there was none left on the planet. :p |
Hi ffm. Imust be going nuts as I read the title as rice relations. lol Must
be all the polictal threads going on..... I think this is just in the bulk/food clubs. not in the regular stores. I dont think there is cause for concern yet. But if I cant buy my crusty baguettes, LOOK OUT!:D  |
OMG, I thought this said flour and rice relations too! LMAO

R-O-F-L-M-A-O !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will ssssooooo do that lol lol lol lol lol............... |
one reason...
One reason for the rice problem is that Australia has that terrible drought.

Flour and rice relations + a couple of old raisins we could make pudding!
Seriously went to the comissary yesterday on base and bought just a box of white minute rice and all of the bags of rice were gone and a sign hung over it saying the distributor was rationing and holding off of the big bag of rice shipments..... Here's my question.....terrible economy...mortgage crisis....gas prices....rationing of rice and flour? Did I fall into the rabbit hole and go back to the Great Depression? Somebody needs to do something! |

I'm just curious. Exactly WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO BE DOING WITH ALL THIS RICE AND FLOUR, especially if they continue to buy this every week. I know that there are little bugs that creep into flour bags and rice bags. I'm just trying to picture these big bags of rice and flour, and doing this every week. Good Lord. lol |
Well, I can tell you this.....if I have to hoard something it's NOT gonna be rice and flour!! I'll stock up on Cheetos, chocolate and frozen pizza!!!
|
I believe
it is the restaurant owners going to the Sam's Club and Costco and buying 40
80 lb bags at a time! Also group homes, community shelters, etc. Then there are the survivalists... stocking up their shelters. I use two little bags of rice every 6 mos or so. I only put it in chicken soup. I don't even have flour in my house! |
I think I've had the same bag of flour for five years!! Think it's time for a new one???
I use Success Rice - I wouldn't know how to cook regular rice if my life depended on it!!! We don't eat that much of it - otherwise I guess I'd have to learn. Who on earth (besides restaurants) uses a 40 pound bag of rice?? I mean, where would you keep it? |
I'm so bug nuts, I won't have anything in my house that might harbor any infestations. So you know I don't have rice!!! or pasta. When Alan wants Pasta, I'll buy a box of Dreamfields, make the whole box, make up some tuna croquettes, and he'll eat them for 2 or 3 days. I'll freeze the left over pasta. No problem there.
What I have been making is Quinoa. It's really good. I make it lots of ways. I don't know why but the day after I had a small amount during dinner, well the next morning, my sugar was a bit higher than I would like. Haven't had it since. I make it for Alan. I'll try eating it again at another time. It has a nice nutty flavor (kind of like brown rice), but it's chock full of protein. And I buy the pre-rinsed kind. Don't even have to rinse the stuff. What a handy way to get protein. Oh, I made falafel last night. Bought a box, added the water, followed directions, put a bit of oil in a skillet. Browned them on all sides, served it to Alan. He almost choked. I tasted it. It was delicious. Boy do we have different taste buds or what?? I thought it was delicious. He said "don't ever serve this to me again. UGH!! " lol |
We eat white rice regularly. I buy the small bags of regular that you cook. I keep it in a glass jar. We also use flour to make bread, etc. I buy like a small bag or two and I keep the one I'm using in a container. The other one I freeze. They tell you to freeze it to kill any kind of bugs that might be there. (Actually, they would be what you can't see). Anyway, we use both regularly. Also, enjoy brown rice and wild rice; small bags. I keep them in glass jars as well.

Kitt,
I also use flour and rice on a reg basis...also store in either jars or air tight plastic containers. My MIL is putting the flour in seal-a-meal vac sealed bags and freezing it. I tried to talk to them today about it. They said they have been down this road before and they are going to be ready. Flour I would miss if I didnt have it....but rice...not so much.....as for DH and DD they dont care about the rice either. I just hope thier local tv station gives a updated report soon so they will stop the insanity......(accourding to her opinion the news station tells only the gospel) her money, her deep freeze, her gas wasted on the trips to the store, and her energy used to bag up the stuff...... oh well.......... Thanks for your input everyone......... |
Hi FlyFishin Momma, Thank you for your response. Interesting. Actually, we would miss both flour and rice. But, I'm certainly not going to hoard it:icon_rolleyes: Just me but I wouldn't be going to all the trouble of putting the flour in a seal-a-meal vac bag. I don't even have one. Thanks again:)

call her local news station. tell them there is a crazy rice and flour hoarder in town. :p |
I just learned something today!!!
YOU CAN FREEZE FLOUR!!!!! Never would have known that. Now here's a question. Does it become frozen (like when you freeze a steak). Absolutely fascinating. I wonder if you can freeze rice??? I remember YEARS AGO, when we had a hamster in the house. We bought all the toys , the wheeley stuff, the sawdust, and the hamster food. No one told me to freeze it first. Never knew anything about hamster food. So I bought some food in a bag and put it underneath my cupboard. And I put some of the food in the hamster cup along side the cage. I noticed that there was flies flying around. Couldn't figure it out. Then I told someone I had a hamster. And they said "YOU DO PUT THE FOOD IN THE FREEZER FIRST DON'T YOU??" and I replied "why on earth would I put hamster food in the freezer?" and they went on to explain about the bug eggs, etc etc. From that day on, I froze all hamster food for 24 hours before sealing it up in bags. And now I hear you can freeze flour!!! wow!! |
Melody,
NO.....It doesnt freeze solid lol lol lol.....You can also freeze coffee....I do that often also..... and I didnt know about the hamster food either so we ALL learned something new today lol lol!!! |

Hey Mel... you can freeze rice... it doesn't hurt it one bit. Abbie |
Wow, freezing rice, hamster food, and flour!!!
Want to hear something funny? Many MANY years ago, my son brought home a little frog in a little plastic container that he won in some bazaar. Having never had a frog before, we didn't know what to feed it. We never told my husband that he had the frog. So we go to the pet store and we are told the frog eats some kind of worms. They came in this small round container. The guy says "you have to keep this in the refrigerator". (Don't ask what my stomach did, but we do what we do for our kids sometimes). So we get home, I put the little worm container in the fridge. Alan comes home, my son and I go "look at the cute frog". Alan goes absolutely ballistic over this one inch frog. I have never seen a man lose it over a one inch ANYTHING. He says "what does he eat?" I said 'oh you have to see this. (I hadn't told him where the worms were). I go and get a worm, and put it in the glass container, and in front of ALL of us, this long TONGUE jets out and grabs the worm and Alan goes "oh my god, did you see that'. I thought things were going really well at that point. I said "oh, he eats worms, but we have to refrigerate them". Alan marches over to the fridge, opens it up and there's the little container of worms. Now I had previously looked into the container (it was all closed by the way). What I saw made me cringe. All Alan saw was this container of worms that were next to his milk. WELL, DON'T ASK WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. We should have been on Candid Camera, with the scene this man made in the living room. We had to go and get Frank's friend Steven and he came and got the frog. There has never been a frog in our house to this day. Who knew they ate worms?? |
What I found was pretty much like I posted. Brown rice can be stored for 6 months under average conditions. That's because of the essential fatty acids in brown rice. Those oils go rancid quickly as they oxidize. It will store longer if refrigerated, but I don't. I just put it in a clean glass jar with a good lid and store it in a dark place.
On the other hand, white rice has the outer shell removed along with those fats. So, white rice isn't nearly as good for you:D but will store longer. Well, I love it too anyway:D If white rice is sealed in the absence of oxygen, you can store it for 8-10 years at a stable temperature of 70 degrees F. - oh my:eek: If brown rice is stored in the absence of oxygen, it will last 1-2 years. You need to keep it as cool as possible when storing it. At say 60 degrees F. it will last probably 2-4 years. And, as posted, flour will not freeze. When you take it out of the freezer though, you should let it come to room temperature before using it. Coffee is another thing. I just heard the other day that if you store it in the refrigerator or the freezer (in the freezer unopened and I was going to do that), it will get moisture in it regardless and you do not want moisture in the coffee grounds before it's brewed. I just keep it in a cool dark place. Anyway, that's what I've learned over time for what it's worth:ROTFLMAO::Excited: |
I keep my flour and cornmeal in the fridge. I used to keep my cigs there too, keeps them fresh.
|
I forgot to mention that yes you can freeze regular rice. But, it's after it is cooked and then you just thaw it out and put it in the microwave or whatever. I have not read anything that says anything about freezing raw rice. There perhaps is no need for that. You can't freeze the cooked minute rice type as when thawed and fixed, it gets gummy.
Another thought on the coffee. I guess if you aren't a connoissueur of coffee - I'm sure not:D - it wouldn't matter much if you keep it in the fridge or the freezer. Just my thoughts:winky: |

Never thought about keeping cornmeal in the fridge but that's probably a good idea. Mine is in a container that has a good lid on it and in a cool, dark place. I know people who keep their cigs in the fridge as I understand it does keep them fresh. I don't smoke :winky: but thanks. |
Bugs in your flour or rice just means you can cut down on your meat purchases, your getting free protein!
Prices have doubled or more and expected to rise, one way to beat price increases that may drive away business was to stockpile these items. Drought in Australia also an effect on it, a booming world population and conversion of food to fuel all a factor. The USA was one of the worlds largest exporters of food, if we are going to attempt to turn it to fuel? |
