Koala77 05-02-2008 11:05 PM

Thanks for that Jo.

My DH loves the Derby, being a horse racing man at heart......but....

Because Oz is a day ahead of Kentucky, I suppose you all want me to tell you the name of the horse that won.....:D

Jomar 05-02-2008 11:45 PM

Hmmm
-how would that work?
The race is tomorrow in the USA and shown on TV live here??

Wouldn't it mean that it would be shown on your TV or News on Sunday then??
The time zone things confuse me sometimes:confused:
or are you funnin me LOL

I am joking Jo!

Today is Saturday here in OZ, but obviously we won't see the Derby until tomorrow, same as every one else.

Didn't mean to tease. Sorry.

watsonsh 05-02-2008 11:56 PM

Hey Anne, can you get me tomorrow's winning lottery numbers too? :D

tamiloo 05-02-2008 11:57 PM

Jo...I think she was trying to play a blonde one on you...I kinda fell for it...until I talked to my Olhipie who lived down under for two years...a long time ago...

I do love the derby...but I like everything building up to the actual race...too fun!!

Jomar 05-03-2008 12:07 AM

Ok - my brain took awhile to catch on LOL:D

My hubby teases me because by the end of the races I'm riding the coffee table and keep turning the sound up on the TV..
I pull the coffee table right in front of the TV - and sit on it- then as they come down to the wire I'm riding too...

I had a pony and then a really awesome horse.
I was a true hose crazy girl, rode mostly bareback racing thru woods and fields taking log jumps, running thru ponds and puddles, riding along the country roads with neighbors and cousins.
The boys had minibikes and then motorcycles- so i got to ride those too.

I raced my horse against my brothers motorcycles in a harvested field for a quarter mile { he was qtr horse/Tennessee walker mix}
the motorcycle speedometer said he was running 45 miles per hr:D
It was like like sitting on a smooth muscled train..

Anyway whenever I watch the races i relive that feeling of riding my horse back then.

Jomar 05-03-2008 12:16 AM

Oh I just want to add that I hope it is a safe race and no one gets injured.

I think it was 2 yrs ago?? that the horse shattered his rear foot and eventually had to be put down - I think he would have been a major super horse if that didn't happen..
Barbaro-
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/hor...ory?id=2747087

I cried watching the slow motion replays of his foot flopping around - and he was still wanting to race - the jockey had to really work to stop him .

Koala77 05-03-2008 12:21 AM

I'm so sorry Jo. I didn't realize that you wouldn't know that I was joshing with you.

I would never do or say anything ever that would ridicule or hurt anybody, so please accept my most humble apologies.

That'll teach me not to be facecious again!

Jomar 05-03-2008 12:28 AM

oh no don't worry at all.:D
umm -:o actually I was drinking some wine while I was reading/posting tonite :p
it slows my brain down- that's my excuse and I'm stickin to it.:grouphug: LOL

AZjanie 05-03-2008 10:04 AM

Beware; if you are soft-hearted like me.

I love horses but horse racing has a really ugly side too. :(

I watched a documentary a few months ago about what hapens when the horses are too old (usually 5 years) and broken down to race.

Having being ridden so young while their bones are still developing cripples so many. They WILL run on broken legs because they are so hot blooded and only know how to run.

The ones not fortunate enough to use as breeding stock go to auction where some end up in slaughter houses in Mexico and Canada for human comsumption in other parts of the world since it is not allowed in the US.

Fortunately there are groups who adopt horses and these horses can spend their "golden years" enjoying life as they should. I believe Senator Warner (Liz Taylors ex) was involved with this?

I am trying to find out more information so I can be a part of saving these noble animals from such a horrible fate.

I am one huge fan of the kentucky derby. Me and Jo would get along great as i too have all the speakers playing inside house and outside and the further they go the louder... the more my thumb hits the volum up. i just jump up and down and do a happy dance if one i picked places or shows but if it wins i gloat for weeks.
Florida has allot of horse farms and most times a derby horse was born or resides in Floida weather they win is another question. My eyes on the big screen from 4 p.m. on :p. cook out too
go run go safe fast racing!!!!
Peace
BMW

Yes the sad side of any sport I think...:(- starting focused heavy training and competitions before the body had matured.

Horses {all modes of the industry}, Greyhounds, kids {the extremely focused sports training}

for horses & dogs it's because they want to see & prove that the animal is good early on so they can get more for the stud fees after the racing days are done.

watsonsh 05-03-2008 12:00 PM

Been to the derby a couple of times through work. One of DH's clients was a sponsor. And I had a purty pink hat :p.

Its a blast but those mint juleps...blech! Just gimme a margarita :D

Burntmarshmallow 05-03-2008 12:03 PM

I've never been a fan of gambling, but I've always been a horse lover. I know these horses love to run and I enjoy watching them run, so it's all good to me.

I fell in love with Secretariat as a kid, and I still have a photo of "Big Red" on my wall. I used to ride a thoroughbred who was a cousin to Secretariat. A woman I knew bought him from the race track here and retrained him for jumping and dressage.

The last race I watched was with Barbarro. I fell in love with that horse because he reminded me so much of Dandy Man, the horse I used to ride (same markings, same personality). I was absolutely horrified when Barbarro's leg shattered shortly after coming out of the gate. WE did that to him in our quest for "bigger, faster, more - never satisfied with enough."

Good luck to all you betting on the horses today - and good luck to all the horses. I hope it's a safe and fun race. :)

Enjoy the mint juleps!

Twenty Seven years ago, I was newly pregnant, and Alan took me out to breakfast. It was right next door to OTB and everybody was milling about, all excited over the upcoming race. THE KENTUCKY DERBY.

(I know nothing about horseracing).

So I picked up my head and looked at Alan and said (and I kid you not).

Where is the Kentucky Derby??

He just looked at me with a mouthful of scrambled eggs.

I said 'what??? Where is the Kentucky Derby??

He just stared at me.

He then swallowed and said: "Do you have any idea what you just asked me??" and I said "Of course I know what I asked you, I don't see what's so hard about this, WHERE IS THE KENTUCKY DERBY??"

He FINALLY understood that I really was clueless (both at my own question, and how foolish I was sounding).

He politely took my hand and said: "Melody, the Kentucky Derby is held in KENTUCKY"!!!!

I never laughed so hard in my life.

Burntmarshmallow 05-03-2008 03:37 PM

lol do ya know where the Daytona 500 is? ha your silly thanks for the laugh Melody!!!! :D

watsonsh 05-03-2008 03:39 PM

Or the Indianapolis 500. :p

Thanks for the chuckle Mel!

watsonsh 05-03-2008 05:24 PM

So sad they had to euthanize 8 Bells after the race. Broke both front ankles. :(:(

Burntmarshmallow 05-03-2008 05:27 PM

now that was just down right sad. They had to put 8 belles down due to breaking 2 ankles. :( :( :(.The only filly in the race. SAD!:(

watsonsh 05-03-2008 05:30 PM

Just watched the replay.

They said she broke em after the race. She came in second and looked fine even right after the finish line :(

Curious 05-03-2008 05:34 PM

:Sob:

very sad. :(

KathyM 05-03-2008 05:53 PM

I swore off watching that race when Barbarro broke his leg, but I couldn't resist watching today. I didn't want to pick a favorite, just in case. :o I toggled between 8 Bells and Return to Glory. My husband pushed me, so I chose Return to Glory. We laughed when Return to Glory threw his jockey prior to entering the gate - figures. :D Phew - okay, the jockey may have a bruised ego, but no one was hurt.

It took my breath away when they announced 8 Bells had to be put down due to two broken ankles. :( It was hard to watch the celebration of Big Brown's win afterward. :(

That's it. I'm never going to watch racing again. They are breeding those horses TOO large and keeping their legs, especially ankles, too small and fragile.

Burntmarshmallow 05-03-2008 06:01 PM

I know Kathy. Big brown was the horse that suposibly had weak/bad ankle its why he only started 4 times they said durring pre race show. to keep his feet strong if only 8 Belles trainer was as kind. just really sad is all i can say right now :(
:grouphug:

Lasgo 05-03-2008 06:13 PM

I can understand frog races with children cheering them on because I never heard of a frog dying because of one of these.

I can understand people racing because, even if they die in the process - they knew what they were in for.

But the poor horsees - it's not like you can ask them, "hey horse, how's it going today? Do you like panting and running to death???"

I feel sorry for them and the greyhound dogs.

Kitt 05-03-2008 06:22 PM

I picked Big Brown to win so that was good:) But so sad to hear and see what happened to Eight Belles :Sob:
