Nanny Rips Baby Girl From Jaws of Coyote in California Sandbox

CHINO HILLS, Calif. — A nanny pulled a 2-year-old girl from the jaws of a coyote when the animal attacked the toddler and tried to carry her away in its mouth, officials said.

The girl was playing Friday in a sandbox at Alterra Park in Chino Hills in San Bernardino County. Around 10:30 a.m., the caretaker heard screaming and saw a coyote trying to carry the child off in its mouth, officials said.

The babysitter grabbed the child and pulled her from the coyote's grasp, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

I'm so sorry this has happened, but I'm glad she's safe.

I cannot doubt this has happened when Australia have dingoes, and dingoes are not that different from the American coyote. The following is from: http://www.warangers.asn.au/history.htm

OMG!!!!! When my twins were 4 we walked back from a private beach to our rental along a lonely path to our rental, a coyote appeared 5 feet in front of us, looking us over. Being the mama bear I was, I pushed kids behind me, grabbed the only stick I could (this was the sand dunes, the stick was a hollow reed of sorts, short and flimsey). I told him "GO AWAY!" Thank goodness he did.

This is so scary.....seems like we're hearing of these wild animal attacks more and more. Not sure if they are happening more often or if the news coverage is just covering them more now. Thank goodness that nanny was alert and quick acting.....who knows what could have happened if she wasn't. :(

On a lighter note.....when I read the subject title I thought it said "Nappy Rips Baby Girl........"!!! Made me wonder if Nappy is a super-hero on her days off!! :p

Scary!! When I was moving to Alaska I made my last stop before the last leg to Anchorage. It was a small town named "Tok" Alaska. I left my DD and Mother in the room and went to the cafe' to get fried egg sandwhiches for breakfast before the journey. As I left the restaurant....I was being stalked by a Wolf. It really freaked me out, but that wolf was NOT getting my breakfast. I just got stiff, walked quickley and did not meet his gaze. He slunked behind me all the way to the room.....I wonder to this day why he didn't ambush me. I suppose he must have been used to people.....:confused:

Wow, I remember (years ago), the movie with Meryl Streep, and she recreated the story about a mom who had her baby taken by a dingo.

She was not believed and there was a trial.

Can't remember the rest of it. But jeez, when you here about coyotes and kids in their mouths, it just lends credence to the original story.

Living close to where it happened, its been all over the news. Its such a cute playground.

They suspect the coyotes are coming down out of the hills for food... trash etc.

IN the same news report that night another neigborhood had a mountan lion scare, was in someone's back yard.

I kind of wondered how far away was the nanny when the coyote came and grabbed the kid?

I dont think she was far, maybe 40 feet or more? The child was in the sandbox and the nanny I think at a picnic table with the other child that was an infant.

The news said that the child screamed and the nanny ran over and played tug of war with the coyote. They said the coyote had the kid by the butt.

There was another family in the park that had a couple of kids that witnessed the event.

Poor kid has to have rabies shots now. Thats painful

Do you have trouble up north with coyotes or mountain lions?

Yep, Shell, not too long ago a guy totaled his car in a crash with a bobcat about 20 minutes from here. He totaled the cat too.

Yay for the nanny!!!! She rocks!! Those varmants can be brutal, she's a lucky gal that he was not more intent on keeping the tot. Hopefully, he had more diaper than butt, poor little kid.

The more people, the more houses and the less romm for wildlife, the more we're going to hear of things like this. Plus, there are fewer people hunting than there used to be. So there's more prey for coyotes and such.

We've always had coyote, but now you'll see them in packs instead of a lone one, and you'll see them every day if you're up early enough, not just every couple years.

The tree huggers who are down on wearing fur would freak if only they knew what was living right behind their house, and what it could do to their kids and pets.

and we have coyotes! In our backyards!!

And there was one downtown at the RenCen not too long ago!

Last night the foxes woke us with their barking. A young neighbor is terrified of them, but don't think foxes attack people.

Just today a coyote was starting to cross the road as I came around the turn just down from my house.

We often have deer walking down the road near our house - there's a small lake & stream down the hill.

Husband saw a young black bear running down the road on his way to work one night.

Lately we've had a couple kinds of Owls hooting - 1 set of great horned owls - haven't figure out the other set yet, but they hoot differently.

There is a pair of Bald Eagles in the wetland about a mile from our place but I haven't sen them this year yet.

The dogs have treed raccoons when they come on the property, also a lynx one year.
