My ankle saga, next chapter

I saw my ankle doc on Monday. She wanted to know why I wasn't wearing my fleece lined, knee high, walking cast. I stopped wearing it last week when it was 79degrees, and I was sweating my u know what off. I told her I was tired of wearing it. But, I still had an ace wrap on it, I'm not one to make pain worse.

So, she got me this lightweight brace that allows me to wear my new, new balance, shoes on BOTH feet. Yay! :yahoo:
I start PT at the end of the month. Now that's what I'm talking about.

It turns out I tore my ATF, the tendon that runs along the outside of the foot. Well that explains why it is still bruised, today, day 105.

I'm supposed to make 20 clockwise circles then counterclockwise circles daily. Along with the capital letters of the alphabet with my toes. Anyone care to join me?

One, two, three .... Anyone? How about the alphabet, A...B...C... I can't hear you. :Scratch-Head: Why do I get the feeling I'm all alone? I'll just get my other foot to work with me. I knew I could find a PT buddy.

:OuttaHere:

Hey - I tore the ligament on the outside of my ankle...we're practically twins! I'm doing some serious PT now to try to strengthen all the muscles that help you balance and keep your ankle in place - it's hard, but I can feel it getting stronger. I'm doing it in an effort to keep from having to get surgery. Feeling pretty positive about it after only a week of PT! I bet you'll do great too.

Twinkletoes 05-15-2008 08:39 AM

Hey Miss Corny, I'll be your PT pardner! :cowboy2:

Dad-gummit! I cudn't spell the alphabet with my left foot (I'm right-footed, Lol!) so I jest pretended I wuz spinning a lariat.

The dern thing finally did quit swelling, so pleased as punch 'bout that. I even gave my saddle bronc a holiday Monday and pedaled my bike 5 miles.

That's so cool. I'm looking forward to the torture of PT. I was in PT 3 weeks after when it was so swelled and bruised. It was another 6 weeks before it was MRIed and the tear was discovered. Thankfully my doc had put me in a walking cast and stopped PT too.

Thanks for the encouraging news. You keep inproving and I'll be right behind ya.

I don't really know when I tore mine, but a good possibility is when I flew off my bike last summer (still attached to it by one toe clip!) What did you do to sprain/break your ankle to start with - I can't remember.

The balance exercises are hilarious. I had no idea we had so many different muscles in there helping to keep us upright! I felt every single one of them after Monday's session! Wednesday - I refused to put my foot down (I'm on one leg and she's throwing a ball from different places and I have to catch it and throw back - I would have fallen over before I put that foot down to balance! Good thing I can laugh at myself!

I hurt mine walking down stairs. I accidentally skipped the last two steps and landed squarely at the bottom, then twist ... Scream, and I dropped to the steps holding my ankle and trying to breathe. I swear I sat there 10 minutes.

I'm glad you are able to laugh at yourself. I find just the concept of balancing so beyond my ability sometimes. I wonder what I'll be doing? :Ponder:

I'm glad to see things are looking up for you.:)

Happy PTing..:D Let us know how it goes.

Ok Beth, can we do the alphabet backwards now? I'm getting tired of the forward way. Z, Y, X, W, . . .

I hope the PT goes well for you and things heal up perfectly.

glad the doc gave u a new brace,

dont mess it up more than it is, I had to have total reconstructive surgery, pins, staples, pain with the weather changes,

and not to scare you but they drilled through my bones to bring ligaments from other side to help on my ankle, this all was my fault cause i kept working when it should of been rested,

so now i pay the price, take care so you dont have to pay the price, tendons and ligaments are nothing to mess with, sorry didnt mean to be a nagging dad about this,

get better soon :winky:

oh i can recite my alphabet backwards, dont ask me when or how i learned this, problaly when at school using those big black markers or the rubber cement:yikes:

tovaxin_lab_rat 05-17-2008 10:43 AM

Ah Bethy....I know what you mean about that "hot" boot. I had to wear one when I broke my ankle. (Little Monkey has it now) and I was miserable. Having MS just made it worse and I thought I would never get to take that boot off.

So, off to PT for you....123...scoot....drink water...ABC...circle around the cooler...

And don't let Greta kid you...she walked my legs off in DC last week! Literally!!!

DM 05-17-2008 05:35 PM

Sorry to hear that Beth! Shucks! Hope the PT helps and your'e footloose and fancy free soon!

Thanks for the words of caution experience, and get better wish too. I sure don't want anything like that to happen to me.

My Dad thinks I should be tap dancing or something. I'm following my docs advice not to go without a brace, except for showering and sleeping.

Now I wonder how many patients showered in it before the docs had to tell all the patients not to do that.

I too can recite the alphabet backwards. I blame it on a long bout of insomnia back in the 80's. I tried counting sheep first.

I must admit (head hanging low) that I've been neglecting my toe alphabets the last several days. I've done alot of stairways, up and down. I can, most of the time, put one foot per step going down. It's still difficult, but it can be done. Yay!

I celebrated all weekend two of my sisters birthdays and had fun. I ate so much cake.

Start official PT next Tuesday. That should be interesting. I'll keep you posted.

Bappy! You have to do it! Don't be an idiot like I was, I have always wished I had done more of it when I had the chance after shredding my ankle ligament. It has stayed stiff and weak all my life. Make yourself do it religiously, or I'll sic Sappy on you!

I'm glad you let you eat cake! Sounds like you had a nice time, cool.:)
