* Squirrels!! *
I just LOVE the little monkeys. I have had regular, daily, interaction with them now for a few years. I set up my window ledge almost every morning with food for them and they have come to know me well.
This is the latest baby from a family of them who have been coming to my window for years now. They KNOW my habits and routine. This is "Mooch". He comes early in the morning and also sometimes while I am making dinner, Especially if I am frying anything, the smell attracts him and he KNOWS I am in here cooking. He LOVES french fries. After I finish frying everything I fry up the peeled potato skins JUST for him. Usually some "Interloper" tries to horn in on his claim and fight ensues. Sometimes, I will be in the kitchen, washing dishes or whatnot and I can FEEL that someone is watching me. Mooch and his cronies will HANG from the bricks around the window and look in the window. Yesterday there were 8 eyeballs watching me, I could see their little heads bobbing on the edges of the window. They think they are being Shrewd by staying out of sight but I know they are just Scouts for the rest of the waiting Mob out there. http://www.spearboard.com/rofl.gif |
How cute is THAT? What a fun post. Glad you have lotsa friends to keep on "eye" on you!!! Started my Sat. morning off with a smile -- thanks!

mrsd, I just sent you PM, disreguard, or reguard, I forgot you were already IN here. :o :p |
You know what REALLY hurts is when you see one that you KNOW squashed on the street outside your house. That has happened to me a few times. I Always stop when I see a squirrel TRYING to decide to cross in front of my car or go back but sometimes they go on pure instinct and run right AT a car. :(

LOL....my dog cooper would have a fit with these squirrels...our squirels tease him all the time...get just far enough down the trees so he can ALMOST reach them...they shake their tails at him and clack clack clack.
I love the fact that you cook for them! LOLOL |
I am and always have been a "SAP", no a SAP!! for a hungry animal.

Orphaned Babies http://farm1.static.flickr.com/131/3...01c3784de7.jpg http://www.squirrelyworld.com/images/scarlet.JPG What to do with an Orphaned Baby Squirrel First, do your best to determine why the baby has become an orphan. If it isn’t an obvious reason such as the demise of the mother or the result of tree trimmers, the baby may have been blown out of the nest due to adverse weather, or it may have been accidentally pushed out by the mother or by its siblings. In either case, try to return the baby to the nest if you can, unless adverse weather has knocked the nest completely out of the tree. Returning the baby to the nest is the best possible solution. Don’t worry about a mother not accepting a returned baby because of human scent, this is a myth. If the baby is an obvious orphan or if you are unable to return it to the nest, keep all pets away from the baby and do NOT allow children to handle it. The more a baby squirrel is handled, especially by children, the less chance it has for survival. Call your local veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible for instructions on what to do or where to take the baby. In the meantime, or if you are unable to reach anyone to help, place the baby in a pet carrier, aquarium or sturdy cardboard box bedded with a heating pad beneath, turned on the lowest setting. Use either soft terrycloth towels or a baby blanket for bedding, even an old sweatshirt cut into pieces would work. If the baby is dehydrated, Pedylite can be given by eye dropper or syringe. To test for dehydration in the baby, gently pinch the skin together at the back of the neck or over the shoulder blades, if the ‘tent’ formed by the skin remains for more than a few seconds after you release it, the baby is dehydrated. Please note that before attempting to give Pedylite to a baby squirrel, it must be warm, and also be sure that the Pedylite is room temperature or slightly warmer. If the baby squirrel is fully furred with a bushy tail, it is old enough to eat and may be given fruit such as grapes, watermelon or pieces of cut up apple (no apple seeds) until you can reach someone qualified to care for it. Please do not attempt to feed the squirrel anything more than Pedylite or fruit if it is old enough to eat, and do NOT give it cow’s milk. A rehabilitator will have replacement formula suitable for squirrels and other wildlife, this is NOT the same as kitten or puppy replacement formula. Please do not attempt to raise a baby squirrel on your own, if you care for the animal you must give it the best chance for survival by turning it over to a licensed rehabber. Please do not attempt to make a pet out of an orphaned baby squirrel. It probably won’t survive and it is illegal to keep any form of wildlife as a pet. Even licensed rehabilitators are required to release orphaned wildlife back into their natural habitat when the animals are of age and able to care for themselves. Wild animals are not meant to be pets. If you have further questions, please contact your local veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator. Thank you for caring about baby wildlife! http://www.cwrc.net/images/galleries...el_baby_01.jpg Don't they LOOK like baby Monkeys??? SOOOOOO cute!!! |
pretty freaky they do look like baby monkeys,
as for the one taking a nap, maybe he is contiplating where the water is coming from, just kidding, any one ever see that special on pbs or somewhere like that on how they tried to stop them from getting to bird feeders, clever little rats, if i am correct i think they outwitted every type of bird feeder gaurds they came up with to stop them, one even climbed a cloths line like a marine and drop down on it, ever get the chance to see it do so |

cool videos, was wondering after watching the one trying to nest in your arms, is their sleeping area like a nest? they are a nest animal, just a thought
|
That wasn't me in the videos, they are just YouTubes I found.
As far as their nests, let me find some pics. ;) |

Summer Dreys and Winter Dreys are conspicuous constructions of leaves and twigs mounted high in treetops. Winter Dreys are made in layers. The outer layer consists of interwoven twigs while an inner layer is built up with softer materials consisting of bark, leaves, moss, fur, grass, and “found” materials. They are resistant to winter winds and provide protection where den sites may be in short supply. Summer Dreys are less elaborate and provide minimal protection from the elements. They are less likely to be used for litters. Tree dens in hollow trees are the preferred nest sites for raising young. http://www.northrup.org/Photos/squir...-in-spring.JPG |
cool did not know they use tree hollows too, makes sense warmer and safer
|
Awww, I love squirrels they are so cute! My mom and dad have one that comes to their door, they open it, it steps inside, and they give it nuts. Sometimes it will stand their and eat it, other times it goes a runnin! LOL
Thanks for the cuteness! |
I love them too. My Mom and Dad always called them rats with bushy tails. I didn't understand what the problem was with rats!! But they sure had, and Mom still does have a different opinion of animals than I do, I love them all. My house is proof of that.
awesome pics thanks |
Fascinated
Hi Wiiix,
Over the moon, truly fascinated!!!! (john4) |
I hate to be the wet blanket, but the squirrells I got are just hateful.
We've got two feeders we put corn on and a couple of them always show up "in a mood". High pitched sqeaks and jerking their tails about. Chasing each other up and down and around the tree. And they don't eat the whole corn kernel. Just the center. Which is ok, I guess. The Bluejays eat the rest. *I really need to buy a digital camera so I can do the pic sharing thing. |
I don't like the little red ones!
We have a major problem with them up North....
We live on an island, and since the wolves left there is nothing eating the red squirrels. They have learned to use our cat door, and they come in the house all the time, run around, break things. One even jumped on the screened window near my head when I was napping, and scared the beejeebers out of me. We have used a Havahart trap twice....last year we took 11 off and dumped them on another island. 2 years before that we did 17 ! Some of our cousins SHOOT them, and the locals SHOOT them because they chew the electrical and telephone wires in the winter. We raised a baby orphan squirrel once when my son was little. We took him to show and tell etc. But boy did he STINK! The smell was AWFUL.... I couldn't deal with him for long, so I took him to the Human Society. When you see those cute videos....you do not get a sense of the SMELL! WHEW. We have some tame gray squirrels...they are not so damaging. So I don't mind them. We even feed those. |
Yes, they DO stink, don't they?? ALMOST approaching the smell of a skunk only milder with a bit of a Musky smell. Sometimes if I have screen in window and I am not looking I know one is there because of his STINK. It's tolerable though. If I ever got a baby, I'd give it a bath if it stunk.
It appears we have a New Kid on the Block recently. He is Leary of coming up to window where I put the food. I can see him on other closed window ledge with his little eyeball pressed up againt the glass looking in at me. http://www.spearboard.com/rofl.gif I talk to him and ask him if he's hungry ant tell him to go get it. He usually FREAKS and runs off but comes back later. :winky: Now THAT'S Just Silly. :p |
