Has your Senator/Congressman Signed the MS Caucus?

http://www.msactivist.blogspot.com/

Check to see if your Senator or Congressman has signed on to support the New MS Caucus.

During the week of May 6-9, we spent time with each and every Senator and Congressman asking them to co-sponsor the Congressional MS Caucus.

This Caucus will
  • Actively engage in discussions about access to quality health care,increased MS research, disability rights, and other MS issues;
  • Seek creative solutions to the challenges facing people with MS, and;
  • Raise awareness and promote education about MS in our efforts to move closer to a world free of this disease.
The MS Caucus was Co-chaired by Congressmen Russ Carnahan (MO) and Michael Burgess, M.D. (TX and Senators Byron Dorgan (ND) and Orrin Hatch (UT).

Write a letter to your Legislator if they are not on this list.

If anyone is from Idaho, take note that Congressman Bill Sali has two sisters with MS and he has yet to sign on or take note of ANY legislation for MS. He is up for re-election this year.

If you belong to other MS Forums, please spread the word. The closer we get to the election, the more important it is.

One of the easiest ways to be an advocate for the fight to cure MS or just to have better meds, etc is to go to www.nmss.org and sign up there for advocacy and you will get emails that tell about different bills, etc coming up and all you need to do is put your zipcode in and the pre-written letters will be emailed to your senators and congressmen.

OOPS, I see the site Cheryl referred to had the correct address www.nationalMSsociety.org/advocacy

Just sent a few emails to senators and house member. I am surprised that Senator Durban has not signed on to support the new caucus since he just received an award for ms activism. Thanks for making it so easy!

I hope his name just hasn't been added yet. I would snatch my brother bald if he wasn't on board with something like this! :p

He has Co-sponsored one of the bills we are asking for support, but you might want to watch for his name on the Caucus.

Great information Av8rgirl. I had heard that Senator Obama's father-in-law may have had MS and the You Tube clip on the url you cited confirms it.

None of the current contenders for the presidential race are on the committees. I am sure they are on other committees.

Thank you for making us aware of how to participate as advocates for MS.

My Senator (one of the 18) and Congressman have signed on. However, I see no mention ref MS on anyany of their sites. Looks like I'll have to send a few mails. Note the number of views to the site - only 22,000.

I am glad they have signed on Sheena!! That's a huge step considering there are only 88 Congressman and 18 Senators who have signed on! We have a LONG way to go!

Since we made our visit to Capitol hill, we've gone from 76 Congressman and 10 Senators to 88/18. We're adding!!!

Today was Idaho's Primary. Congressman Bill Sali is up for re-election. One of his campaign issues is health care. I wanted to through something at the TV tonight when he was being interviewed. He still hasn't signed on to the MS Caucus! I think his office and his Aide Marcus will get another letter from me tomorrow. Mr. Sali has two sister's with MS....I am not sure he has his priorities in the right order.

Niko 05-28-2008 01:47 PM

I just checked the list... I didn't see either of my senators, or my representative on the list. Perhaps I missed them.

I have emailed all of them in the past.

Politics is a sport in my state. It always has been.

I'm in New York.

My senators are:

Chuck Schumer
Hillary Clinton

representative:

John Hall

Busy state. Busy politics.

I'm glad to know that Obama has taken an interest in MS. And not because of politics.

Niko:cool:

Bets 05-28-2008 03:20 PM

Nope.
I'm taxed without representation, but that is another story.

Thanks Niko!!

Funny thing is that a couple years ago, Ms Clinton received the award that Senator Durban received this year as Senator of the year. This is the highest honor the Society awards to public officials. You'd think that Ms. Clinton would continue to support MS....I guess it's not important to her anymore...

No, I do not. I do have a commercial license, an instrument rating and over 1000 hours of pilot in command flight time. I own an airplane, a citabria, and used to fly competition aerobatics. I was also a competition aerobatic judge.

I have been involved in aviation since I was a kid (my dad was a pilot). I was also a volunteer for the Reno Air Races for 10 years with my last job as part of the safety brief team for the race and air show pilots. I've done volunteer work for other air shows including being part of the Board of Directors for the air show in Boise for 3 years.

My husband just retired from Delta Air Lines as a captain.

Are you a pilot? What's your background?

weegot5kiz 05-28-2008 09:32 PM

3 of the 4 reps here in illinois just got a note from me regarding this issue, along with the standard comment I added this " i find it rude that you three of you from Illinois are not involved in this, yet, and Illinois beinga highly MS populated population. I also expect this to change, or you can seriously discount my vote in the future and everyone who knows and cares for me with my MS, you can tell the military to cut, bush and his friends have used the 9/11 paranoia long enough, we have home land issues social security, medical coverage, education, and what i see via tv and holly wood a rapid decline in morals. My grandpa use to tell me before i go to my friends house to fix things I was to make sure things here at home were all covered and taken care of. I think this might be a good motto for yall to live by"

peace

Well, I recognize a few names from Texas but I have no idea who's district I'm in. I guess I should pay more attention to politics... The only thing I know is I work in the district that used to be Tom DeLay's district, and the only reason I know this is some issue in the past involving the Johnson Space Center.

Tom
