I did it!!!!!
Well, Ive been wanting to do this for a while. So today I went with my
children to the local animal shelter to look at a dog.:) The dog we went to look at was cute, but there was something. As I was talking to the girl about her, I notice my children and a beagle making great friends..... Well, I took the beagle home and I really feel she will be a great fit. Shes super with my kids and even though she wasnt what I was looking for, she was...... She kinda found us. Her name is Molly and she is great......... what a love. I just wanted to share as the whole family is excited about our new member.:D My friends all think Im nuts, but a girls gotta do what shes gotta do..... |
That's NEAT !
Good for all of you!!!:grouphug: |
Awww Sox.....that's wonderful!! Shelter animals make such good pets - and they are so grateful for the love of a family. Take some pics for us so we can fall in love with her, too!!
Thanks for giving this little dog a home!! :) |
You made my day! Bless you for opening your heart and home to Molly. I just love Beagles.
Just wanted to add, they are notorious wanderers so on-leash only for dear Molly. :) |
You don't decide so much by breed, how much they eat, or how bad they're gonna shed.
You look in their eyes, watch that tail wag. And they look into your hearts. You know you're a match. You just do. Molly... I like her name. Don't spoil her too much, lol. :D  Hugs for adopting. |
Congrats Soxmom - the shelter is a great place to find a pet and that is the best way to find a dog by letting the dog find you!!!
Every time I have gotten one that is how I do it too, wait to see which one comes to us!! Best of luck - I had a 3 legged beagle when I was in high school - a great breed but they love to run so be careful he doesn't go close to the road! |
Thanks everyone, and thank you for the tips on the leash only.:) That is
what they told us at the shelter. I like having her on the leash as there are so many wild animals where I live, Molly would never make it back home if she took off. Yup, so the leash it is. She seems to be doing great. She has not ventured upstairs to the bed rooms , though Im sure she will eventually. We brought her to my parents so Molly has already met Grandma;). We are really happy.......(I say that , but Ill report back in the morning.) Just kidding. Thanks for all your well wishes.....:) |
yes we got a lab mix from the shelter years ago..she was about 6 or 7 months old...and adorable with those eyes....wanting us....and they had a policy..that animals cant be adopted out till they are there a certain amount of days...it wasnt her day yet..but they wouldnt let you pick ahead...so I recall the day she was gonna be free to adopt....the kids were in school and I was at work...
hubby was sooo concerned others would be there for her, he was there 20min early for open....the lady was so touched....Sandy is our family dog...and she was a keeper... good luck with the doggie...and hugss tahnks for sharing, sarah |
Does it look like Snoopy?:rolleyes::D
|
Hey Sox congrats! It's funny how they find us isn't it? I think it's the best way really. Do you have any pics yet?

congratulations on the new addition to the family!!! ...and thank you sooooo much for considering the shelter. There's a special place in heaven for you!!

Okay guys, (please dont laugh at me, im a new mama) Molly has been
with us for almost 8 hours, We've probably been outside about 4 hours of our time together. Noone has seen her pee. I know girl dogs arnt as conspicuous as boy dogs when they pee. Do you think shes withholding the pee because everything is new? My poor Mr. Sox has had her out for the last hour and she still hasnt.:( Any suggestions?........ TIA |
A really, really big hug?
|
Do you have other dogs around? Maybe borrow a neighbor dog to come over and pee in your yard. Sometime all it takes is to smell where another has gone.
Another thing to consider is she may have voided and you didn't see it. Sometimes Bergie gets so excited and pees without crouching. lol |

Well, around ten last night, molly still hadnt peed. Mr sox took her out,
and came back in, "She peed!":) me: Yay, Did she go alot? Mr. Sox: ummmm....I dont know. me: Could you tell she was going? Mr. Sox: ummmmm, I dont know Me: Did it take a long time? Well, you get the picture. Sheeeesh, men.;) Good news is she slept thru the night and is still peeing , just like a regular dog.:) |
You're a good momma, Sox!! I can tell Molly has gotten a great home. :)
When my cat had a UTI I practically camped out by the litter box so I could be sure that he was going and that he was going as much as he should be. He was on medication but I wanted to be sure - animals can go from bad to worse is a very short time frame when it comes to UTI's. Molly will become one of your kids - and you'll worry about her as much as you do the human kind!! |
On peeing....
When Sophie had surgery - 12 hrs, for cancer, spaying and a hernia - the vet called me to update. He was concerned because hours later, no pee. I came down to see her and said "She's inside. Sophie doesn't pee inside, she's a good girl." so in a T storm, pouring rain, the vet and I carefully took the lil patient out. He brought a plastic container to catch some urine. He wanted to see if there was any blood in it, to see how the surgery went, if there were any problems in that way. He explained he had had the crew re-strerilize the OR, and was just about to sedate Soph again and go back in to see if there was a blockage, since she did not pee for so long. But first he just pressed on her bladder, and expressed the urine that way. And he'd had to call the staff back in on their night off to do all this, mind you. So we're out in the wind and rain in March... with a pee cup. Still wouldn't go. I said "She can't pee. You're watching. Give me the cup." We both looked away. I told the dog, "Go ahead and pee, we won't look" And dangit if that dog didn't squat right then. :p |

And people say animals aren't smart...... I sometimes think mine are human!! :p |
Oh I like stories like this! Congratulations!!! :D I hope you'll get years of happiness from your new doggie.
We have our second cat now from a shelter. They have been the best two kitties we've ever had! And it's true, you have to see that initial spark of a connection. We got our late cat Sweet Pea when she was 8 years old from the shelter. She was near death, but I fell in love with her and nursed her back to health. She lived another 12 years and gave us years of happiness. She was a sweetie. Now we have Rocky who is nearly two years old. He's pure love. :D He wants to cuddle and snuggle and likes to be carried like a baby by me and DH. He's lots of fun and gets plenty of attention, you should see his toy collection! lol He came from a cat hoarding home so he was in pretty bad shape for awhile when we got him at six months old. The shelter had neutered him and gave him all his shots though. I feel so lucky that we found him! |
Pretty much every one of our cats was adopted in one form or another (one adopted us). The funniest one was when we got our cat Rascal from the shelter...we had been looking at a really cute little fuzzy tabby, but he had a touch of feline rhinovirus and wasn't real active, so it was hard to gauge his personality.
I was about to give up and leave to come back a few days later to see if they had any new arrivals or if the tabby would perk up. I made one last pass by te rest of the cages and there was a pile of 3 black and white kittens...two boys and a girl. Right as I was about to move on to the next one, I heard this little meeeooow!!! and the little girl stood up from under her two brothers, climbed over the top of them and came to the front of the cage, marching her little feet and purring like mad. Needless to say after a period of playing with her and holding her, she came home with us. She is around 5 years old now, and to this day, she still announces her presence every time she comes in the cat door if we are in the house. She will walk through the house meeowing and looking for us until she finds us...only then will she go back to the kitchen and get a snack or a drink of water, even though she walked right by them on the way in the cat door. |
UPDATE:
Molly is already one of the family.:):D:) |
I love stories like this, Sox!
Thank you for adopting Molly. She might have just been a little frightful of where she was supposed to go. Your patience paid off. Oh and Brain~ I just remembered how much I love your funny stories! Keep them coming. You always have such a comical way of telling them. |
I've been reading this thread and keep waiting to see the pics!!! Where are the pics of Molly????
|

|
Good for you for saving a life. Beagles are such great family pets!
|
:Dunno: No pictures yet?
|
SOXMOM you made a great choice. Beagles are very friendly, devoted
and playfull. The only thing that is different they don't have the usual bark they HOWL because they are in the hound family. My dh and I used to breed beagles many years ago. Keep the leash on even when you are in the house. This is for training purposes. Using the lease when you call to them to come, just pull it to you lightly and then give the dog a great praise and treat if you want. It takes awhile but well worth the time and repitition. There are so many good Dog Training books that you can pick up. The best are written by Ceaser Milan The Dog Whisperer. Wishing you and the family many happy years with the new member of the family. Jappy :) |
