Need Some Input!
Hi everyone! I need a little help or advice. I have had an aching hip for around a month now. A couple of wks ago, the Rheumy gave me a cort shot, but it is steadily getting worse. Last night I was in tears. :Bawling:
It feels better in the morning, but as soon as I move around throughout the day, it really hurts alot. The pain is mainly in the hip area, but seems to radiate around the area a little. I have Tramadol, which tends to constipate, and Darvocet, which makes me tired. Should I call the Rheumy and tell him about the pain? To me, it sounds like Bursitis/Tendonitis. Anyone have any ideas as to how long this pain in the HIP will last? I can't do anything or it aggravates it immensely. Thanks for any input! :Thanx: I am so frustrated!!!! |
Hi DM,
I'm normally not big on calling my doc but in this case I definitely think you should. Intense pain that is not relieved by anything is something that needs to be addressed, imo. It could be so many different things and maybe if they do some x-rays etc. they can find out what it is and start an effective treatment. I hope you feel better soon. Jules |
Hey DM I'm with Jules on this one. I hate buggin my docs but no one should have to be in that kind of pain, especially a princess such as yourself;)
I would call him and let him know how uncomfortable you are. He may have some suggestions or a different med. Take care you! http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...wellfriend.gif |
I agree with the others - give your doctor a call. You pay him for his expertise.....make him use some of it for you!! :)

Thanks Jules, Beth, Kelly and Cin for you responses. I called the Rheumy's office and left a voicemail for his nurse. I do think he is at a satellite office today, but I could be wrong.
Does this sound like bursitis or tendonitis to anyone? I'm one of those fanatics that likes to self DX myself. I am so angry that my body continues to betray me. |
Sounds like my hip. Mine is okay standing, worse after walking a while or laying down - yow. I finally had an xray whicch looked fine - no arthritis, they said.
I used to take elavil for it, but I'm so dang tired with out that, I had to get off it. Thing is, the hip can hurt for weeks or months then just be fine. This has been going on since '03. And like you, nothing seems to help, other than that elavil. I have shocks down the leg with mine sometimes, but I was thinking bursitis too. Wonder if that shows on MRI? Maybe I'll call my doc too... Hope you get some help on this. I know, it's miserable. |
The best defense is to see a doctor, maybe get some xrays DM. You've fell before and maybe this is in relation to that fall. Either way, it needs to be xrayed and evaluated. If your in that much pain, it isn't right. Especially when you say you feel fine until your up on it. Hope it gets resolved soon for you!
|
DM .. I had that too .. and was told 'bursitis' ... had some sort of 'patch' electrode treatments .. thru the sports therapy specialists ... it seemed to help ... but, no xrays were done ... just alot of new stretches ..
|
I get hip pain too DM. Sometimes every step is murder.:(
I hope you get some help and feel better soon. |
DM I only had the hip pain when I was in withdrawal from the steroids. The neuro told me it was like rheumatoid and would last 2-4 days. I can sympathize with you but mine only lasted 2 days. I couldn't imagine it lasting a month. I hope you get some relief. Let us know what the doc says.
I am sending some hugs your way :hug::hug::hug: |
DM - I can sympathize with you on the hip pain. I am experiencing it right now. It usually happens on most days when 1)it is cold outside, 2)it is raining outside or 3)over use of the muscle by standing too long. My rheumy told me thatmine is due to RA and he has given me davocet. It works fine and doesn't make me tired, however, the pain is getting worse. I was born a breached baby and my hips were already out of place when born so this also has a lot to do with my pain. I have tried oxycodone, but the darvocet seems to work a little better at this time.
Maybe you can call and ask for some percocet, although if you get tired on darvocet you will probably be KO'd with percocet. But please do call the doc...the pain is a killer, I know. Missy |
Just MHO, but when I start having problems with my joints, I head for an orthopedist or a sports medicine specialist. One of them saved me from unnecessary surgery recommended by a podiatrist. The podiatrist had "tried everything" and "surgery was my only option"...the orthopedist recommended wearing wider shoes...problem solved.
And yes, to me it does sound like bursitus, and the best med I know of for that is naproxen (Aleve). |

Wider shoes? Amazing! In a perfect world, all docs would be spot-on with their diagnosis. *praying for a perfect world* :smileypray: Hmmm, actually, in a perfect world I guess there would be no pain. DM, I hope you and your doc can find that magic potion to end your hip pain. Aaaackkkk! |
I hate to say this, but it helps knowing other people understand the type of pain I am having. I mean that in a sincere way.
Thanks Missy abd TXBatman~ The weather HAS been flip flopping lately, so maybe that's not helping, and I have to be ultra careful of certain meds like Ibuprofen, as they are hard on the kidneys. (only have one) Brain and Sox~ It does seem to hurt more when I am in a position or move to make the hip turn. *even sitting makes it ache* So, the actual bending of the joint radiates pain. I know I'm a wimp!:p Thanks for the input! Thanks Von~ Are you talking about a Tens Unit? My DH has one for his back, so we put the electrodes/patches on my hip last night and did a TX. It did seem to help, but it was short lived. Thanks Tracey (GG) I can use that hug! Here's one for you. Yeah Sandy~ You know me pretty good by now and I did take a tumble last wkend while camping. *no, it wasn't alcohol related* b/c the hip hurt B4 the fall. I am just waiting for the Rheumy's office to call. And, we all know how long that can take. Thanks everyone..... I feel bad for anyone who has this type of pain anywhere... OUCH! How long does Bursitis last?? I want it to feel better like>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yesterday!! :grouphug: |
I hate when you're hurting, Dm. I hope your Doc comes though for you.
Sending Hugs and Good wishes.. |
DM
I'm sorry you are in such pain. If it's not one thing it's another. Hoping your doc calls soon, and relief is quickly following. Sending healing hugs     |

I think you should call the doctor. I had this on and off for awhile, and I figured out that it had to do with a contorted way I'd sit in my chair and sleep too. Sort of like an ostrich stretch, folding up the left leg. I babied it for a few months, and it eventually got better. It also got bad when I had a recumbant stationary bike and the motion on my hip made it worse. Can you pinpoint any movement that typically sets off the inflammation? That's what I did instead of going to the doctor. I wonder now if I'd had PT maybe if it might have improved faster? Feel better soon Sweetie! P.S. I see that you did call the doctor and you're waiting for a call back, I hope it doesn't take too long! |
Thats too bad about the kidney, as NSAIDs are good at reducing inflammation. You might also try topical creams (I like theragesic). Getting heat into the joint can reduce the swelling some also. One of the hallmarks of bursitis is if you can move a joint one way and it doesn't hurt and it hurts like the dickens to move it another way. That is usually a sign that the swollen bursa sac is pinching a nerve when the joint rotates a certain way. If it is just painful to move no matter what you do, then it may be something other than bursitis.

Have you heard from you doc yet????????
Have you tried a moist heating pad! When I am having pain and spasms in my hip and back the moist heat seems to settle it down a bit. Hope you feel better soon:hug: |
Hello Daisy May,
Have you tried Lidocaine patches yet? I've read about them, and they seem to be used often for this type of pain. I would also suggest a consult with a pain consultant if your Rheumatologist agrees. Often they are trained to treat pain much better than a specialist, as the specialist is trained to diagnose, and not necessarily treat chronic pain. I'm sorry you're hurting. That's the best I can offer.:( All the best, Chris |
How are you doing tonight my friend? I am thinking of you. I know how much that hip is causing you pain, I saw it in your eyes...
did you hear from the dr?:hug::hug: |

TXBatman has it right with the signs and symptoms of bursitis DM, but please beware of creams and patches. If they contain a medication that you can't take orally, then you'll have the same side effect when used topically. The anti-inflammatories are a good example. If you can't take them due to stomach upset, ulcers or renal impairment etc, the creams will give exactly the same side effects, and have been known to induce gastric ulcers. Please feel better soon DM. We hate for you to be in pain. Hassle that doctor too if you don't hear back first thing in the morning. Keep phoning until they get sick of you and put him on the line, just to shut you up :) |
Thank you Sal, Chris, Wiz, Beth #1, Beth #2 and Char for your concern and help. :Thanx:
NO~ didn't hear from the Dr today, so guess I was right that he was in a satellite office. I did break down and took 2 Ibuprofen though, and it took the edge off for a bit. Oh TXbatman~ It's OK that I only have one kidney. My DS has the other one, so not to worry about that. *elective surgery* Guess I'll take the Darvocet before bed and call the office in the morning. I'm not a good patient and am mad b/c I couldn't go to a visitation earlier, as didn't think I could stand in line. ARGHHHHHH! Thanks for the info on the topical meds, Anne! Told ya you were as sweet as your voice... :~) *was I that obvious, Char???* Guess I was too busy feeding the animals! :D |

Hey there Missy Princess....I feel bad for you...here, you want another pilow? maybe some TH whine...er I mean wine??? How about a little cheese and crackers...are you comfy now? Oh good
Sounds like bursitis to me. Had that in my shoulder ... not fun, painful. I hope you hear from the doc soon. Rest, take your meds, and just don't push it. I don't think the rheumy is who you need to be talking to, you need to be talking to an ortho doc. But that's just my VHO...but I think The Batman said that too...so I am in good company!!! :D  |
Hi FG! I don't know what to do, but since the Rheumy gave me the Roid inj, I thought I'd see what he has to say first. It just seems like it's one thing after another. What the heck~ guess I'll take a few crackers and cheese to go w/the whine.
You can relate to how I'm feeling, as you're going down a similar path. Let's find the Yellow Brick Road!!!! http://dl2.glitter-graphics.net/pub/...j5yhtty7dh.jpg |

O-Kay!!!! Let's go!!! |
Oh DM, I'm sorry about your poor little hip! I am so proud that this time you called the Doc right away.
(her hip pain is probably from all those years of bumping and grinding in the club catching up to her!) The Dr. will have you right as rain in no time! |

*as we all have* I am calling Rheumy's office when they open today. Hey, how did you know I used to go to the Roxbury? http://dl7.glitter-graphics.net/pub/...zl5ndve7l7.gif |
Update
Well, the Nurse called me, told me she had talked to my Dr and said that I should take the Darvocet or Tramadol b/c they can't give me another roid inj *already knew that* I asked her if I should see an Orthopaedic~ she said to give it another day or 2, call them to come in if not better.
I decided to go get groceries. I have waited all dang, cold, nasty winter to be able to get out, so I took some Ibuprofen, which is a no-no for me. But, who cares at this point? My nurse friend called me and told me that since I have severe Osteoporosis and have taken a few falls in the past few wks, that I should consider a hip xray if it's still throbbing by tomorrow, as it could possibly be a small fracture. No way do I want to know that!!! The Ibuprofen tears my stomach up; :vomit: the Darvocet makes me dizzy :Crazy 2: and the Tramadol constipates me. :holysheep: Hey, we need an icon for "constipation"!! :D So, if you see a wannabee Princess stumbling around, bloated and holding her tummy, w/a piece of toilet paper stuck to the bottom of her shoe~ please pick her up cause it's ME!!!! :paperbag: I'm hanging in there and going camping come He77 or high water, even if I have to lie in my Princess camping bed and eat bon bons. :p Thank you all for the PM's and posts and help. :Thank you: I'll get through this... *just aggravated* :hissyfit: By George, I think a nap is in order. |
With everything you have on your plate, you seem to have a good outlook and sense of humor!
Keep us posted. I am sending you some soothing vibes and pray that you get some relief soon. :smileypray: Hopefully your stomach will handle the ibuprofen. |
DM,
My gastro doctor told me about Miralax. He said it's the best thing for those with irregularity. Maybe you could take that along with the Tramadol?:hug: I hope it's not a fracture! |

Well, DM, I think your Rheumy is putting you off...you've been in pain a bit too long after that last 'roid shot! I'd be calling him tomorrow and asking for an appt for an x-ray of that hip or a referral to an ortho. Stand up and be heard!!! Sorry, you are standing up!!! (my mistake :o) |
I'm sorry that you're still in pain DM, but do watch what medications you take with that tummy and kidney to take care of. I hope it eases soon.

Well, I've got the RS 41 Stimulator on right now.
Get your minds outta the gutter; it's an electrode/tens unit. I've got two electrode patches on my hip anda it feels good to have it stimulate the nerves/muscles. Hopefully, it will feel better tomorrow. http://dl6.glitter-graphics.net/pub/...viqyz5pktd.gif I love the poo icon, Anne! Now, that's funny! :D |
