Hearing~~Do Certain Sounds Make You Cringe?

I've noticed over the past couple of years that my sense of hearing has gotten much more sensitive - especially to loud or shrill noises.

Pre-MS even the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard didn't phase me. Now, even the vacuum cleaner is too much some days.

My neighbor has a Mustang GT and he starts it everyday about 3 PM before he leaves for work. He lets it idle out in the driveway for a few minutes. That low growl it makes drives me batty. I have to stay away from that side of the house until he leaves. Sounds like that never bothered me before.

I went out to dinner with my boys the night before last and they were getting ready for a large party and were pushing tables together and moving chairs. The sound of the chairs being dragged across the floor was almost too much. I had to put my elbows on the table and put my fingers in my ears until they finished!!

I was in Publix and the alarm on the chicken fryer in the deli went off (just a high pitched beep) and I had to walk over to the other side of the store to get away from it. I actually got dizzy from this noise!!

Seems like everyday there is a new noise I cannot tolerate. Guess I should invest in some earplugs. Maybe I'll just lift the ones they give me for the MRI machine next time I go for one!!! Funny thing is.....all that banging and clanging the MRI machine makes doesn't really bother me!!:o:rolleyes:

MSacorn 05-29-2008 01:45 PM

Oh, I'm extremely sound sensitive and it's really gotten worse the last couple of years. I don't like to go to movies because it's so very loud. I have to keep my tv low because I never know what I'll hear next.

My ears have a quiet ring alot of the time and I don't hear as clearly, but I'm thinking that's just old age.

It's bizarre to say the least. Do we have anymore like us out there, or what?

Girlie Girl 05-29-2008 01:47 PM

Kitty when there is a lot of noise, no sound in particular, I have a hard time focusing. I seem to get very agitated when there are loud noises going on around me. This is all post-ms. I never felt this way before either.

Sorry you are dealing with it too! :( Sounds like you have a plan though, swiping those earplugs ;)

BaxterTheBunny 05-29-2008 01:51 PM

I don't like the tv loud. Wish someone would invent a tv that will automatically turn the volume down on commercials.

Other things that drive me crazy:

Baby screaming
Dog barking

Kitty 05-29-2008 02:10 PM

OMG - screaming babies are the worst!!! As much as I love them I just can't tolerate the screaming.

Kitty, I just ran into that one yesterday...

our power was flicking on and off all day (the corporation wants an increase in the electricity rates)

and the BLEEPING BEEPING of the UPS drove me outside to seek my husband to shut it off !!

I know how to safely shut down my own equipment, but his is a different kettle o'fish.

and it wasn't the "regular" beeping... it was an ALARM, a full-on howl, due to the brownouts, surges, and constant fluctuations occurring.

so, yeah, I know what you mean... it was the pitch, combined with my inability to DO anything constructive about the noise.

babies crying get me too, and certain dogs, and the sound of brakes screeching.

I don't know if it's a hearing problem connected with my MS, or my advancing age, or my irritability of late due to hot flashes, night sweats, and lost sleep.

Erin524 05-29-2008 03:09 PM

Screaming children.

Not so much the screaming babies, but the little kids who insist on making as much noise as they possibly can. The ones that do the SCREEEEEEAM while they're supposed to be sitting quietly in a nice restaurant. The kids who have never used their Inside Voices while they were inside.

After that, it's loud tv's (my parents must be going deaf!)

and my mother's humming. It's not a normal hum. It's the off-key, tuneless humming of the insane. It never changes and she hums compulsively, as in all the freaking time. (she's had a head injury, so I cant exactly get her to stop it all the time)

I know what that humming SHOULD sound like. The first time I spent any time with my mom's younger sister was about 10yrs ago. My aunt was driving me back to the hotel I was staying at, and she was humming the exact same tune! It sounded great! Apparently compulsive humming is not a feature of my mom's head injury, but must be inherited from a relative or something.

The music is apparently some tune that my mom and aunt's private piano/music teacher taught them (same teacher that taught Faith Hill) I think it's something they were taught to keep them in time or something with the music. It worked with my aunt, not so well with my mom.

I hear you on this one (sorry, couldn't help it)

My hearing issues are something ELSE hard to explain to other people, as if I needed something else. It isn't necessarily loud noises, it's just CERTAIN noises. Sometimes the dial tone on the phone sets off a ruckus in my brain, for example.

The other day I leaned over the edge of the tub and went to scrubbing on the rubber mat with a scrub brush. It was like a little tornado went in each ear and was throwing debris around inside my head. YOW!

Dogs barking, stuff like that, is annoying, but it doesn't do that weird thing inside my head. Just makes me want to go smack the dog owner. :D

Noidy 05-29-2008 04:18 PM

Sounds have been a pain in my rump for some years now. In college I noticed that concerts didn't go too well for me at all. My ears .. or should I say my nerves just can't take noise. Stores with music are a no no for me because I can't hear and think at the same time alot.. sort of like even when someone tells me something, i have to sit in silence for a second to understand what they just said. I don't even listen to the radio while i'm on the computer. I found that taking ear plugs with me to the mall helps alot. Mine may be caused by another disorder I have known as "aspergers syndrome", but I've noticed it worsened as my MS crept into my life as well.

Vonn07 05-29-2008 04:18 PM

and here I thought it was just me!!!

I can't handle being out in public with groups of people .. like after the parade this weekend, we were inside the bar - and everyone was talking, the music was bouncing ... and the TV was on! ...

when I got in the car to go home - all I heard was eeeeee, eeeeeee, eeeeee just steady .. I have it all the time 24/7 .. but when I'm in a loud-environment, it gets worse. and then my other sx kick in with the burning/tingly feeling, and my face turns beat red ... gosh, to work from home!

applying for jobs that I don't have to talk to people on the phone ...

WANTED: job with no noise, no stress with good pay ...

mom23angels 05-29-2008 04:35 PM

Well..
It's summertime and I have three boys (9,7, and 4) and they fight, scream, and torture one another...which in turn, tortures me. I am not only sensitive to noises but also lights. I have to turn my laptop brightness down when I first sign on because it's too bright and hurts my eyes. I am just falling apart :(

CHILDREN SCREAMING just drives me nuts ! :hissyfit: It started bothering me about three or four years ago - post MS dx.

Let's don't forget the NOSE as well, lol. My sense of smell has recently increased to the point that some subtle smells have intensified to the point that I have to excuse myself from the area or I'll :vomit2:.

Does this mean we can refer to ourselves as having BIONIC senses now?

DM 05-29-2008 07:20 PM

I have a hard time if LOUD music is playing and people are trying to talk over it. It makes me dizzy.
We live by a major hwy and the sound of the loud cycles going by one after the other really makes me cringe. Sometimes there's 20-30 in a group.

I don't have anything against the bikers, just the constant roar makes me go inside the house. I'm getting old! :(

Oh, and loud snoring pushes me over the edge. Thank goodness DH stops when I roll him over on his side. http://dl6.glitter-graphics.net/pub/...z99lj5uafv.gif

AfterMyNap 05-29-2008 07:29 PM

One of my ringtones does that to me, but I don't think it's an audio issue, per se.

Yes to all of you with babies and dogs If a baby's crying or a barking dog is part of a tv show, I have to turn the sound off, untill they stop.

Am I the only one who goes nuts with all the background music they play during a TV or any movie? The music is sometimes louder than the speaking and I have to strain to hear what they're saying. It just drives me nuts....I know, it's short putt..:D

Haha...Bionic...I like that..

I saw the new Indiana Jones movie last week. There's one point in the movie where the music is louder than the actors talking. That was annoying.

And, I saw the movie Ironman on sunday. There was about 2 dozen teenagers sitting either in the row my boyfriend and I were in, and the the entire row in front of us. The brats were CONSTANTLY texting each other, waving their cellphones around like flashlights. Talking. Bouncing around on the seats, and basically just being buttheads (wish I could use stronger language)

If it wasnt for the fact that I'd have to crawl over the little jerks to go out and complain about them, I would have gone and complained about them. It's really annoying to pay $8.50 to see a movie and have it ruined by children who cant keep their stupid cellphones in their pockets and turned off.

weegot5kiz 05-29-2008 08:36 PM

interesting Kitty I was gonna be silly and say yeah license and registration are sounds i dont like to hear, but you are correct last few months loud and shrill annoy me in a bad way, so i take it, this is an MS thingy, and not me becoming a grumpy old man

PolarExpress 05-29-2008 08:36 PM

I'm nearly deaf, have hearing aids in both ears..It doesn't save me from certain sounds, though..Like the kid they keep in the cage in the back room at Wal-mart and torture everytime they see me coming thru the door..Or radios that are turned up too loud (now, I like my loud music, but car radios especially don't sound right anymore)..
My daughter's a loud speaker, which is good most of the time..But there are times when her voice just goes right thru me. Same with my dog..He's not a yappy dog, but he has a very powerfull bark when he feels the need..
I could turn the hearing aids off (worked for my dad), but I'm too nosey I guess..Gotta know what's going on around me :o.

Just one more reason to legalize tasers.

I hate the sound and feel of filing my nails....Mr. Sox or my dm eating

ohmygawd! I HAVE to tell that one to my boyfriend! :D:eek::ROTFLMAO::Dancing-Chilli:

Of course, if you taze someone, then you have to deal with the screaming.

My boyfriend said that he's not going to spend any more money going to movies where we cant concentrate on the movie because of a bunch of rude children.

It's too bad those kids didnt have a parent chaperone-ing them. Maybe then they would have behaved better.

At least they werent throwing popcorn, but having a bright cellphone waved in front of my face is probably more annoying than getting popcorn in my hair. Especially when you've got serious photophobia (light sensitivity) and Dust-Bowl-era-worthy dry eyes.

This one I dont have to worry about anymore, but I couldnt stand the sound of my dog licking his....feet (and other areas)

Reason why I dont have to worry about it anymore is because the dog died in March 2006.

At least I trained him to stop on command. He'd stop for an hour or two and then start up again. While I was trying to sleep.

I think the dog keeping me awake for so many years (slept in my room) is why I dont really sleep more than 2 or three hours at a time without waking up all the time.

I haven't been to a movie in a theater in years.....probably at least 10!!! It's always so loud and I cannot sit that long in one position. Then, too, there are the fifty bathroom visits so.....it's just not a fun experience anymore for me!! :o

As for the cell phone toting teenagers.....I'd have marched right up to the manager or usher and told them that I paid full price for my ticket and I expect them to control the patrons who cannot seem to control themselves. That or ask the unruly ones to leave. If they didn't - I'd have told them I wanted my money back.

I have little patience for people who think they are entitled to control the environment of a public area.

Boyfriend wouldnt let me go complain...and I didnt really want to have to crawl over those kids to get there. I was also a little worried that they'd either start a riot if the manager came to escort them out, or that they'd be waiting to jump us outside in the parking lot after the movie.

There have been a few incidents at movie theatres here in Omaha where people have been shot for tattling on the bratty kids. I didnt have any kevlar or a battle helmet to protect myself with that night.

:holysheep: I think I'd wait and watch it on DVD than risk going to the theater if it's that bad!!!

Wow, I was wondering what was going on with me. I'm assuming the intolerance to noise is an MS thing? I've noticed I have become much more sensitive to noise, stimulation, large groups of people etc. I never used to be like that. I used to love lots of lights, noise, stimulation, big cities etc. Now the radio on in the car sometimes drives me CRAZY. And the television too. The worst part is my husband has lost hearing in one of his ears so he needs to have everything a little bit louder...so I am constantly turning things down and he is constantly turning things up. And sporting events on television -- the buzz and the annoying announcers drive me insane. Although this could be entirely un-related to MS and just a "I'm not a sports fan" thing. :)
