Anyone collect things??

Ok.. this is sad but I will admit this.. I have a HUGE container of beanie babies in my basement, they haven't seen the crack of dawn in years. I used to collect cabbage patch dolls, then I used to collect those garbage pail kid cards, stamps, but I really don't collect anything now..

I was thinking I could use some of my boredom/down time with collecting things. My aunt has a HUGE radio collection that she says will be passed on to me when she's gone, I know she wants them in the Smithsonian..so I might just put them there, I don't need hundreds of radios.

I was just wondering if anyone collects anything? I guess my pen fetish could be a collection.. I can't get enough Gel pens.. I even saw this article online about different collections.. Someone had a snoopy collection ;)

Will anyone fess up to collecting things? stamps? coins? baby teeth? ;)

(this should be the correct link to the collections, I hope)

Erin524 05-30-2008 01:37 PM

I recently freed my beanie baby collection from their imprisonment in their plastic tote box. They're now collecting dust on my bed's headboard.

I also collect yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles, crochet patterns and dog statues.

Also, in my jewelry box, I have a nice collection of Irish clauddagh jewelry. (a clauddagh is a traditional Irish piece of jewelry, usually in the form of a ring. It's a heart that's being held by two hands, with a crown on top of the heart)

I have two clauddagh bracelets, maybe a half dozen earrings, four or five rings and about 5 pendants.

I love to collect stuff!

Kitty 05-30-2008 01:41 PM

I collect Willow Tree angels.

Karen3690 05-30-2008 01:56 PM

Lets see I have a have a salt and pepper shaker collection. Probably over 200 now. Having been collecting them since I became an adult. I also have several baby crissy dolls. I still have my original doll with box and clothes from when I was a kid. She sits on the bed in my extra room.

suzyqz_2007 05-30-2008 02:06 PM

I collect hummingbirds, just about anything that has to do with them. Last count I had over 200 different hummingbird items.

And Beanie Babies! What to do with them? I don't even remember how many I have!

I also have a thing for windchimes but I'm weird, I don't have them hanging outside lol before I got married I had 14 of them hanging in my bedroom. :o

Everything is now packed in boxes and in storage :( If I had that $30 million maybe I could buy a place big enough for everything! lol

Right now though the only thing I've been able to collect are dust bunnies and bills!

soxmom 05-30-2008 02:08 PM

I collect christmas ornaments or christmas decorations that have an
ice skating theme. (guess who used to hit the ice;)?)

I collect patriotic christmas ornaments. My christmas tree is done all in red, white and blue.

Every year, my dad goes with me to Hobby Lobby or some other store that sells ornaments, and he buys me one or two new ornaments for my tree. I love the blown glass ornaments.

Bannet 05-30-2008 03:05 PM

I collect angels. I have a curio cabinet full and every one of them is special to me:)

AfterMyNap 05-30-2008 03:11 PM

Scalps. But I can't chase 'em anymore.

Wood boxes, all from different places I've visited, or that I've made myself, or cool cigar boxes. I have no idea why I do it, I just love 'em! I love making them too, and I'm not even good at it.:o

greta 05-30-2008 03:19 PM

I have a lot of books but it's not exactly a collection. Having a collections would imply that I enjoy dusting :D Not so much!

Oh, yeah... there's that.:o

One of my hobbies is reading all the great classics and my bookcase is a full shrine to famous dead people.:o

kellijo 05-30-2008 03:36 PM

I confess it's frogs for me.

I still have one my grandpa got me when I was about 4 or 5. It's made out of rocks with these big marbles for eyes. He was even in my suitcase when I bussed it out to Cali from here.

mom23angels 05-30-2008 04:00 PM

I just think its interesting to hear what people collect. My mother has a HUGE doll collection and they are scary. I remember seeing a movie "dolls" where all the dolls come after the humans and get them. I used to sleep in the other guest room just to avoid the 300 doll eyeballs staring at me. My nana used to collect bells. When I went to Germany I bought her one from there. When she past away I bought her a special one with angels and placed it in her casket with her.

I guess it's good I only dream about collecting stuff because this house seriously needs to be clean..and in between my headaches, naps, and lack of strength I'm not doing so well with that lately. :(

I collect stuff about the Civil War ... books, mags, videos ....

autobiographies of the First Ladies before Kennedy ... talk about an interesting bunch of gals ...

and trunks .. I have 4 of them, and a cedar chest ... but these are those old travel trunks ... and they are all in my livingroom ... they are fun to get, but tough to get home when I have a little car ... gotta change that!

MSacorn 05-30-2008 04:12 PM

Acorns, surprise. It is very difficult to find acorn collectables. I keep my eyes open though.

I collect Lenox Snoopy items. I used to have a bunch of stuffed ones in the 70's how I would love to have them back now.

And yarn when I can. My stash is extremely small as most of my yarn got left in Denver (freecycle.org). One mans trash is anothers treasure.

See.. that just proves my mind isn't working. I thought you meant you went outside and grabbed acorns off the ground. And, I wondered how can you tell which of those are collectable. But, I think..and hope you meant like porcelin and other substances that make acorns and collect those.

I need something to occupy my time but I guess with the price of gas and food rising I should save my money!

I guess you could say I collect books. I have bookshelves in every room of my house, but I am not trying to collect them. I just like to read. I give most of them away to family members and friends. I also have several hundred books in my office at school.

I am also going to make an admission, but do not tell my colleagues at my university. I love snowmen, snowwomen, snowbabies. I have no idea how many I have, but I would guess over 100, or more. I try to just buy them for presents now instead of for myself. But sometimes, there is one I just have to have.:D

mom23angels 05-30-2008 04:30 PM

Barb,

Ooo.. I'm gonna tell! *grin* So..which of your snowpeople is your favorite.. :)

I collect yarn too. (think I already mentioned that)

In fact, I just received an addition to my stash. One of my online crochet friends just sent me 8 skeins of a discontinued yarn that I'm going to crochet a shawl out of. I'm super excited about that. I love it when people send me yarny goodness in the mail.

Now I have to figure out something to send back to her. Just not sure what to send her.

How hard is it to make a blanket out of yarn? I remember I used to crochet when I was pregnant with my 9 yr old. I don't know if I was making anything but a long strip of knitted yarn. I would love to know how hard it would be to crochet something, make blankets for my lil monsters! :)

Okay, Von, this is weird. I'm a jr. Civil War buff myself, I just stimulated the economy with my very own copy of the Ken Burns series. I was at Gettysburg last year and I have to go back because the new museum should be opening any day now!

The weird part is, I'm a trunk junky too. I have a really cool one with a packing list still inside the lid, written in quill & ink with things like "corset ~ 2" and "hankerchiefs ~ 6" and "lacing hooks", etc. It's really fun to imagine where it may have been, whose it was, did she marry John Astor and change her life? Was she a war widow? Was she American? I love that junk!

Blessings2You 05-30-2008 06:18 PM

Is saving everything I, my parents, and my grandparents ever owned the same as collecting something?

My mother actually "collected" things--match covers, coins, doilies, dogs (especially Scotties), postcards, shells, rocks...yikes. I mostly just "keep" things. Baby clothes, books, shoe boxes, photos, letters my mom and dad wrote each other in the 40's. I refer to these things as my daughter's inheritance.

Someday I'm going to have a really cool collection of something, when I decide what it is. I made the mistake of telling a couple of people I liked puffins, and I ended up with puffin salt shakers, puffin magnets, puffin dish towels. Erf.

mom23angels 05-30-2008 07:07 PM

Is a puffin like a penguin?? I should just google it.. like I do everything else I don't know ;) I don't know what I can give my sons for an inheritance.. my mother is giving me her jewelry..even tho I don't wear anything but a cross. Boys are different.. decisions decisions...they'll probably just want money! :)

Monique

It's not hard at all, depends on the intricasy (sp?) of the pattern.

If you just do a solid stitch like a half double crochet, or a double crochet back and forth until you think it's big enough, it's pretty easy.

Abbie 05-30-2008 07:25 PM

I used to collect Precious Moments figurines--most of them have a cowboy/western theme..... They are all boxed up now and stored away... No where to display them.

I guess I collect Tony Stewart matchbox size cars... I've never bought one but I have MANY... I also have all of the Semi's w/trailers.

Oh my.. my mom has a curio cabinet filled with those little things. She used to get them monthly and special ones.. and even bought some for my sons which I think are in a cardboard box in the garage! They were cute.. but when I think of all the money she spent on those Precious Moments..she could of sent us all to school :)

Ponder....

Fine....

I have a Dalmatian collection. The nice music boxes, water globes, etc, are on display, while the carp like stuffed dogs are in boxes. Why? Cause someday when I have grandkids we can play with the stuff and then they can take one home and it will be my kid's problem to deal with.:D

(Holly...I have the dalmatian frame right here on my computer desk!)

I think this thread should be stickied and renamed as:

This Years Christmas Exchange Wish List! :D Just joshin'.

One poster mentioned something that I did have a collection of at one stage.

Some-one gave me the cutest ***** for a gift quite some time ago, and I commented on how sweet it was. WRONG thing to do!

Every birthday, every Christmas, every available excuse people bought me gifts of **** . I had them on every available shelf, coming out of every cupboard, lined up anywhere they'd fit.

Finally I yelled ENOUGH!

I kept the very first ***** I was given and threw the rest out. No-one will ever know what that **** was because I do not want to see another*** in my house! EVER!

Coin collection ;)

and playing cards. They are cheap and can get them about anywhere you go with a picture of where they came from. Now I just hate to use them.:p

Do all my various outdated computer parts count?

Momma's Kids 05-31-2008 08:41 AM

I did collect porcelain dolls...I have given most away. My joy is collecting antigue glass especially tea cups/saucers. I also have a lot of stoneware jugs, water/milk pitchers...and my grandmother's water pitcher with the glasses. It is beautiful...cobalt blue with gold and it reflects colors when the light hits it.

I also have a huge metal traveling trunk that belonged to my ex MIL...

I also have a house that is too small to keep it all. lol
