Flooding

Well...we're all trying to figure out how to get home now. The rivers and streams have gone over their banks and they're shutting down streets as we speak all over town. I know I had 5 inches of rain in just a couple of hours last night, so...oi vey. And granddoody is in town at a babysitter's house who lives in a flood plain. Hope I can get there to pick him up.

Thank you ducky.... I was just coming here to see if she'd checked in yet... I remember when my moms house flooded several years ago and it was horrible.... such a mess to clean up....I was praying Doody didn't have to go through that....

Thanks for letting us know. I'm so glad Doody that you're safe  We were under a tornado watch most of yesterday but thank goodness we only got severe thunderstorms.

Doody 06-01-2008 12:18 PM

Yes, I'm home

Thank you ((Duck)) and everyone for your concerns.

What a mess! Don't know what all to tell so just highlights.

When I went home at 4 pm Friday the road I live on was blocked by sheriff and local police. They were only letting through people who lived on that road and only to go in and pack and evacuate. (I know some who didn't go, and I was torn, but it was my usual Friday night with daughter and granddoody, PLUS granddoody was not far from my home with a friend.)

So I got my stuff, grabbed granddoody and went to pick up mommy from work.

The only way out of town was north of me and over to the interstate. The 1st exit to town was blocked because the highway was flooded at that exit. The commuter traffic on the interstate going north was mindboggling because they all had to use one exit. It was bumper to bumper for several miles.

We were appalled at the extent of the flood even south of town. Poor farmers, haven't been able to plant so far and those that have just had their fields ruined as they are completely under water on both sides of interstate.

A major road in town was closed that has many businesses on it. Both Walmart and Target on that road were flooded in a flash and people in there were stranded. Some of their cars floating around in the lot. They used payloaders to come and get the people out of the stores to take them to safety.

Both roads to my place were flooding. Luckily, the creek (that dumps into the river) crested at 7 pm, but the river didn't crest until 1 am Sat morning. Most of the roads were open by afternoon Saturday.

Luckily, my place didn't get the flood. It started over the road but didn't get any further. It's still on the other side of the road though as the river is about a half mile west of me.

I'm afraid all the wet conditions and heavy snowfall may have an awful effect on our economy because of the corn and oats and soybeans not being planted in time. Dunno.

Here are a few pics from my cell phone.

River to the right of that stand of trees, cornfields to the left and to the right. I'm a half mile to the right side of the picture.

My road during evacuation. You can see cars heading north. My house is on the left side of the pic across the road, cornfield to the right and the river is off to the right (the west).

My road After the flood waters started to recede. That's a cornfield to the left. My house to the right on other side of road. What a mess!

After the river started to recede...my car sitting at side of road that flooded. River off to the right. And a cornfield next to my car.

This road adjoining mine completely flooded the night before. Cornfields on both sides. Town is straight ahead.

Another cornfield near me.

Aerial view from a local tv station. Interstate south of town. The river is off to the right.

Have some photos of town as well, but haven't uploaded them yet.

Geesh, what a winter and spring we've all had!!!

Doody

I'm glad you and your home are okay. Those fields look pitiful - poor farmers. :( I don't see why it wouldn't have an impact on the economy.

Thanks for the pics.

Alffe 06-03-2008 05:15 AM

Akkkk! That's a lot of water...has it receded? Glad you are safe Doody.

Yes, it has receded, but still lots of areas with standing water. And we've had torrential rains this morning. I hope it hasn't rained a lot north of us. We're supposed to continue to get rain this week so keeping my fingers crossed for the best.

Doody 06-03-2008 09:52 AM

If it continues to flood, I think I'll be okay as I'm on a small (very small) hill. I could stay and protect my home, animals and such, but I just wouldn't be able to leave to get to town. I'd have to walk west of me through a small stand of woods to get to the next road and then head toward town...IF I parked my car somewhere along that road, LOL.

Curious 06-03-2008 09:56 AM

i'm so thankful it has missed you doody.

Roseblue 06-03-2008 05:02 PM
