The new friend thing...
Okay, Granny Clampett here trying to figure out the newfangled gizmos.
It's pretty cool to check your email and find out somebody wants to be your friend! :D But...what I don't understand is, um, what is the benefit? I thought we were ALREADY friends! If two board members are "friends", do they have some special access to features that others don't have? Is it just a e-way of "making nice"? Do we need a special handshake, or WHAT? Somebody please 'splain all this to me!!! |
I think it is just something to make the forum have a feel similar to a myspace page type of thing.
Just a fun little gizmo that Vbulletin added into the new version. |
I was wondering that myself, B2. Is doesn't seem to offer any advantages. I thought maybe we could put a check on a handful of names to PM them all BCC or something. I've begun feeling old today.;)
|
Maybe there's a prize for whoever has the most friends?
So, can you imagine rejecting somebody who asks to be friends? Or, hmmm, under what circumstances would I un-friend somebody? WHAT? You don't like Bluegrass music? That does it! I BREAK our friendship!! This should be fun. Of course, my basic problem is that I can see ramifications behind every curtain. :D |
yes, I think it is just one of those features that comes with the newest version of vBulletin that Doc installed for us today :)
before there were "buddy lists"....now it is "friends" ....just a new way of "networking"..... see my kids teach me the cyber socializing lingo ;) I have been working so havent checked out all the cool new features yet, but I do love the new theme choices and am using the Spring one for now :p AMN I am pretty sure you can now send out "group messages" ....... Yappy prolly knows more on that :D |
Hey! B2! Let's try it! I'm going to go break up with you right now, and NO, I am not sending flowers or candy!:D
Minutes later: Okay! I broke up with you, did you get a notification of total rejection? Anything? An empty dog collar? Something??? |
Well, since I was already asleep when you posted, I had no clue. And I responded to the email notification before I checked the thread. So.
I saw the notification, and said to myself, What? Cindy already friended me! Maybe it's a computer glitch. Or I dreamed the first one. SO I went directly to my profile, and sure enough, there was Cindy up there in the friend place, AND down there in the "waiting to be accepted or not" place. Oh no! Is Cindy losing her grip? Or...am I so insignificant that she couldn't remember whether she friended me or not? What will happen if I approve her AGAIN? Do two positives become a negative and she disappears? And if that happens, will she think she's been rejected? Or...if I approve her AGAIN, will my computer explode? I don't think anything happened. I think the two Cindys (Cindies? Cindy's?) merged into one. Does that mean that the break-up function doesn't work, or is it something different? |
I am getting lost....
It is just been too long since I was in middle school! ;)
This is like the "buddy".... but one receives some notification that one has added you to a buddy list? Then when you make a small mistake, or inadvertently (or on purpose  offend someone) and then they take you off their "buddy"-friend list, YOU are notified? In other words you don't have to type... "I am no longer your friend nah nnnah.nah nnnnaah.....naaaahhhhh" ? I don't do my space type stuff. So I am clueless I guess, as usual. It appears, having the "friend" stuff off the forum obviously, is basically a GOOD THING. It allows people with very social personalities a way to connect, leaving the boards more open for the subject matter, to which they are assigned. The one downside is for the shy types, who may feel left out. Esp when people discuss friendships publicly alot. |
Okay, so I befriended B2, then defriended her, then refriended her and she got no notifications except the refriending request. So, there it is.
It's also important that everyone understands that the "visitor messages" connected to a username ARE PUBLIC. They appear on your profile page for the whole world to see. This could get fun!;) |
OMGosh....
visitor messages public!! OMG
I will send you a PM...about this. |
for anyone who does NOT want to receive the public visitor messages on their profile, just go into your options section in your user CP and DISABLE the visitor messages! ;)
please note, visitor messages are *not* the same as PMs, they are comments that others can leave on your profile |
Thanks, Chemar....
This one is going to get alot of thought from ME!
You know these features cut both ways.... If one disables something for a good reason, which is not public, others may come to erroneous conclusions if these features are disabled. (example== one may be perceived as a snob, or unfriendly, but in reality one may be protecting oneself for a good reason or reasons.) |
Why, mrsd, I do believe I've found someone as "bad" as I am! :D I am locally famous for thinking of all the potential things that could wrong, the misunderstandings and ramifications! What if? What if?
I drive myself crazy worrying that someone's going to get the wrong idea. |
