Heat Affecting Mood?

I was wondering those of you with heat sensitivity do you find that when the temp goes up it messes with you disposition.

I get very easily angered and/or upset when I'm stuck in the heat.

I know alot of people with out MS can be affected by the heat in this way but it seems to be very severe in my case.

I have zero tolerence, compassion, patience in the heat. My mood goes sour very quickly and quite severly when I get too hot.

I was just wondering if any one else had severe mood changes from the heat.

Its like a switch is flipped and no matter how good a mood I'm in to start I go sour but if I can get cooled down my mood will swing back to normal.

Is it just me ?

Carp, I am like that all the time. I DO live in Mississippi where it is hot all the time :) I have gotten better with zoloft.

I can see where the heat could affect you that way though. I feel miserable in the heat, and just want to be left alone, so I become short(er) as well.

tkrik 06-10-2008 10:26 AM

*Raising hand* It is not just you at all. I have experienced this as well. When I get overheated, I get grumpy. This is so foreign to me and so not who I am that it upsets me thus making the irritability worse.

I really try to keep cool, going from a/c to a/c. It's sad how I can go from Ms. Happy, girls lets going shopping, have fun, etc. kind of person to a grump just from walking from my door to my car (maybe 50 ft or so). I will be irritable until the car itself cools down. Then I'm happy again.

I hate the heat!

When I get overheated I can't stand myself and I imagine the others around me feel the same way.

Don't mess with me when I'm overheated, I may be a wet noodle physically but if I don't cry I will probably kill you with my words.

Grrrr....

Heat causes symptoms for me, which can make me irritable . . . but more importantly, it the heat tires me out. When I am tired, I am grumpy.

I know how everyone feels as I become a grump when overheated as well! One thing I have learned from MS boards is to take ibuprofen (or equivalent) prior to going out in the heat to help maintain core body temperature, like you are treating a fever. I have tried this and it seems to work -- but you know how everyone is different.;)

I'll have to try that. Thanks for the suggestion. *going to Advil bottle now as DD18 and I have to go out in 1/2 hour*

Of course the Advil will help with this sinus infection too and DDs will be happy as I won't be so blah! LOL.

karousel 06-10-2008 01:52 PM

Yep, I'm a BIG B in the heat. My poor DH and DD. Even when it's humid out I am like this -- even if I'm in the air conditioning but can still feel the humidity.

Heat affects everything in my life, and everything affects my mood, so yes.

When the temperature goes over 80, I slip into "Bite Me" mode. Not proud of myself. :(

viseeu 06-10-2008 01:58 PM

hmmmm... interesting question. I started getting sensitive to heat about the time I turned 40 and along with the change of life thingie  was moody as h*ll during the next 5 or 6 years... then that got better and in 2000 after my dx with MS I could not tolerate heat period, but my mood didn't really change, just withdrew to a cold shower and cold blowing air.

what I find interesting about this whole heat sensitivity is a couple of summers ago I decided to go to a Native American "Sweat"... knowing full well how sensitive I was to heat and that it would be EXTREMELY hot in there... I was also practicing yoga regularly, yoga breathing, eating once a day, losing weight, and it just felt 'right' to do. Though I didn't make it but about 20 minutes, after that I was LESS sensitive to the heat!

now, I haven't been doing my yoga for about a year and I find myself once again very sensitive to heat

mood doesn't seem to change though. I just start frantically looking for COLD when I get overheated! :D

MSCherokee 06-11-2008 05:49 AM

It's not just you, trust me. Whenever I get overheated I accelerate from a nice, easygoing, funloving person to nasty mood mode in warp speed...and the worst part is it feels as if my body is being possessed. LOL As soon as I cool down, I'm back to normal. I can feel it coming on so I do my best to cool down fast - I can't stand myself when I get in that mood!

Bannet 06-11-2008 07:12 AM

The heat is NOT my friend.

I am a miserable person when the temp goes past 75. The humidity about kills me.

My kids and dh hate to be around me when the temp goes up.

If Momma ain't happy nobodys happy:eek::o:)

braingonebad 06-11-2008 07:24 AM

I'm more cold sensitive than heat sensitive. So this is my problem: as soon as it's warm, the A/C goes on. I'm okay outside to about 90, but then I do have some sx - this time it's vertigo. Come inside and it's freezing (to me) and that hurts.

So I've waited nine months to be warm, still dealing with the heat sx, and still freezing in my own house.

Last night I'm clutching the couch trying not to fall off and dh is complaining as soon as he came home from work( blah blah blah, kids, blah blah bills). I said I was going to bed. He said he'd be up in a bit. I snapped at him to sleep on the couch.

:p

I'm about the same way, upper 80's or so I get SX like crazy but than if I get cold I hurt SO BAD and it doesn't take much for me to get cold.

suzyqz_2007 06-11-2008 10:30 AM

The heat brings out the MonSter in me that's for sure! Poor dh will say you don't look good...you better cool off, I think he does this so that I don't turn on him! LOL (he calls me the queen B when I get overheated and B doesn't stand for bumble bee! :o)

Weird thing is it can be 100 outside and I've got sweat pants on in the house. The a/c freezes my legs. Go figure!

doydie 06-11-2008 10:34 PM

After having my daughter and her two kids here this week, I now realize that if my kids were still at home I would be the same way. But it's just husband and me now. He doens't put much of a demand on me at all.

tkrik 06-11-2008 11:40 PM

Hey Brain - I'm sensitive to both heat and cold. However, the heat gets to me more and in a different way than the cold.

JessieSue 06-12-2008 07:39 PM

My symptoms are very temperature sensitive, but the heat is the worst on me! I'm impossible in the hot weather, heck I can't stand being around me when I'm hot and miserable. I get on my own nerves! LOL

ckepi 06-23-2008 12:02 PM

Thank you all for responding, I feel better knowing maybe I'm not so crazy after all.;)

I get spastic in the cold now also, new symp. this year but the heat is still the worst for me.

I can't stand myself when I'm too ho either, I try to do what I can to cool down ASAP.:grouphug:

MSacorn 06-23-2008 12:41 PM

I'm a heat grump too, and you put humity in the mix, whoa. Lets just say, stay out of my way.

I also get exhausted from the heat, so it requires me to lie down. Taknig me away from potential victims.

's
