Thunderstorms vs. MS - looking for answers

I started to feel like crap last night when the thunderstorms started to roll through...major vertigo, numbness, cog function, slurring. I hadn't felt that bad since before my steroid treatment! I got really nervous because it came on so quickly. My other flares have never been like that.

It got me thinking why now? What did I do to start this flare, I just got over my treatment a month ago.

Then I starting to wonder about the severe thunderstorms we were getting. Did they have something to do with it? Was it the change in the atmosphere?

Did any of you other New Englanders feel a change last night with the storms?

soxmom 06-17-2008 08:30 AM

No change for me.......but that was some wild lightning last night, wasnt
it. Sorry you are feeling poopy.:(:hug::hug:

Girlie Girl 06-17-2008 08:34 AM

That was crazy! The streaks were just bolting across the sky.

Thanks for the comfort Sox!

I don't live in New England but I know that sometimes before thunderstorms here, I do get some dizziness and slight cog changes. Once the storm starts, I start feeling better.

Did you start feeling better after the storm passed? If not, I would call the neuro and talk to them about it. If you did feel better, just make a note of what happened and talk to the neuro about it at your next visit.

In the meantime, sending you lots of hugs and hoping you are feeling much better.

Thanks TK! I am still not better but we are supposed to be getting more storms later on today. The vertigo is not as bad but everything else is still there. Maybe tomorrow when everything clears I will feel better. At least I am not the only one to feel the difference in weather.

tkrik 06-17-2008 08:44 AM

Have you tried taking an Advil or something similar? I do find that helps me. Although mine are definitely sinus related and therefore, I don't have the numbness or the slurring (the 2 things I would be most concerned about in your case).

Girlie Girl 06-17-2008 08:49 AM

I did take some last night before my Rebif shot. Then I fell asleep so I don't know if it helped any. I will try some. Anything can help. What gets me about the numbness is I keep biting my tongue! That is such a nuisance (sp?) Maybe that is why I am now slurring...:p

barb02 06-17-2008 09:03 AM

I also get headaches and have sinus issues when there is a drop in barometric pressure, but I do not think this is ms related.

Kitty 06-17-2008 09:59 AM

I was going to mention the barometric pressure, too. Sometimes that can give you a headache or make your sinuses go crazy. Sometimes it makes me dizzy because of the pressure in my ears. This can give those of us with MS all kinds of crazy symptoms.....so what's new??

I hope you're feeling better now. We've had some pretty severe thunderstorms this Spring. And it's not even summer (officially) yet!!

I am feeling a little better, thanks, numbness is still there but the dizziness is gone for the most part. More storms are on their way this afternoon. I just had a little retail therapy. I had to run to the store for a couple things. That always helps :p

Ahh..All those negative ions floating in the air with the lightning and strong winds.
I really don't know, I'm just full of carp..But it's a theory :o.. I'm sorry you're not feeling so great. Something to look forward to, the weather here has been really nice the last couple of days, and I'm assuming it's moving in your direction!

braingonebad 06-18-2008 09:09 AM

It's a little better for me now, but I used to be able to predict a storm better than the news.

I could tell you if the baromatric pressure dropped less than half a point, because I'd get a migraine. And I'd know six hours before a storm hit that it was coming. Great info for BBQs.

;)

The migraines are fairly well controlled now but still I feel it. My rt arm goes tingly if there is going to be lightning. I never have that sx any other time. Several hours before the storm, I may get a headache, usually get vertigo, have trouble walking ( kind of doing that drunk walk and talk thing) and spasms and pain get a bit worse.

Me too, Brainy. I hurt all over when a storm is approaching, but it's the constant change in weather, that kills me. What did Trish call it....Bipolar weather..LOL!

That's what I called it Sally. We have all been experiencing weird weather patterns. Although, I have to say ours has been fairly predictable with a few unexpected cooling trends.

Brain - I am right there with you on weather predictions. My sinuses give a good 24 hour warning before it hits. We are walking barometers. LOL.

Sally can tell you, ours has been *predictable* too. In Ohio, you can predict it's going to do everything within 2-3 days. You'll have a low of 30, a storm and need to turn the A/C on all in one day. Predict anything other than a volcanic eruption or hurricane and odds are you'll nail it.

:p

That is exactly how I felt the other night. Although I still am not feeling great. Not like the other night, it hit me hard and fast. But I still am dizzy and numb.

Isn't that strange! Maybe we should be for hire to predict weather for outdoor parties and BBQs?!?! Well I'm glad I'm not the only wacko!;)

weegot5kiz 06-19-2008 10:17 AM

been noticing my headaches are worse with the storms, had not noticed if any of my sx are will watch and see

SallyC 06-19-2008 10:29 AM

I awoke feeling much better, this morning and I can tell you why. The weather is exactly the same as yesterday...70s, low humidity and sunny..:)

How long will this last, you ask? As long as the weather stays the same, I say..:D Please, Lord, at least a week..(on hands and knees.)
