Another Round of Steroids

Come last Thursday I felt myself fading fast.... Today I am at work but it is the first day I have been out of bed since Friday night. I called the neuro yesterday afternoon and they called back this morning. He has set me up for 3 days of IV Steroids and then 10 days of oral. I will start the three days tomorrow. I am seeing a pattern come my last week of classes (classes last 8 weeks) I am getting sick. I think for this summer I am going to cut back to one class instead of two.

I am heading out to class now - no rest until Thursday at 3:00. Please say a little prayer I get through the next couple of days. I can't understand why I am in so much pain, numbness, spasms and everything else is there is nothing wrong with me?

Thanks for listening....

Thanks for the update, little lambchop, were you reading my brain between the lesions? I was just wondering if you're okay and now I know that this junk is kicking your little butt again.:(

At least the doc is treating your nothingitis this time, but, sweetie, you do need to rest. I know it's never a good time to do this, but please give yourself a chance to kick this one.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for you (except maybe an express hand-delivery of Chambord).;):hug::hug:

You have my empathy. I started with the 5-day (1000 mg) high dose steroids on Apr 27. I am still tapering.

I hate steroids!

Poor little lambchop!!! :( I had problems while in school too. My pain and stiffness got very bad. Near the end of the degree I started taking two classes at a time alternating with taking six weeks off (ours were six wks long.) That worked out well for me. I'm glad you're cutting your work load down. It should help you sweetie.

MSacorn 06-24-2008 12:37 PM

Sorry to hear you are doing the steroids again. I hope you feel better soon. The stress of night school is what finally led to my dx. Cutting back your classes is a good start. Now rest, rest, rest.

Healing 's

jprinz99 06-24-2008 01:06 PM

sorryto hear you aren't doing so hot. Sending a giant e-aspirin your way. Feel better or at least not worse while on 'roids.

Kitty 06-24-2008 01:13 PM

I was just thinking of you this morning and wondering how you were. I'm sorry you're having problems. AMN is right, though (good grief....did I just say that??!) you do need to rest and give your body a chance to rebound. I think it's a good idea to cut back on your school schedule. I hope you feel better soon......wish I was closer so I could actually do something to help instead of just sending thoughts and prayers.

viseeu 06-24-2008 01:19 PM

ouch!! so sorry to hear you are feeling so poorly but glad to know they are treating you for it. Hope the steroids help and that your pain diminishes.

SallyC 06-24-2008 01:23 PM

Awwwwwww, Yabbit..:( Feel better soon, please..

mom23angels 06-24-2008 01:42 PM

Gosh.. I know how you feel. I'll be doing that in the Fall. I was supposed to take summer classes but cancelled both since I knew my body was barely making it. 1 more year of school!! (+grad assistantship + internship in a Hosp + my 3 lil monsters). I really do hope you get some rest and give your body a chance to relax.. with school and work and everything, you're amazing but definitely cut yourself slack if you need it!!

Twinkletoes 06-24-2008 03:25 PM

Aaaahhhhh, poor wittle Yabbit. :( *scratches behind ears*

You take it easy whenever possible so you can get this behind you.

Dejibo 06-24-2008 04:27 PM

Aww you poor kitten. go take a nap, sip a chocolate milk shake, and snuggle in for some serious bed time. get some good snuggly sleep.

greta 06-24-2008 07:39 PM

Rest, rest, and more rest. Give those neurons a chance to repair the damage. Hope you're feeling better soon.

tovaxin_lab_rat 06-24-2008 09:57 PM

Oh Yabbit...I got your email yesterday and was in the middle of a mess and couldn't respond and now I read this. Get some rest and I hope the IV steroids do better this time than the oral 'roids did last time. I am glad that your doc is treating you, that's a good sign that he does think there is something going on.

PS: I got the pictures. Thanks! ;)

Natalie8 06-24-2008 11:23 PM

So sorry to hear you have to go on the roids again. I think it is wise to reduce the work load and go down to one class for the time being (no beating yourself up!!). Feel better soon.

Riverwild 06-25-2008 12:20 AM

AWWW! My poor leetle Yabbit!:hug::hug:

Glad to hear the doc is doing SOMETHING about this, even if it is only steroids...

Want me to bring ya some chicken soup? Chowdah? Spinach Artichoke dip? A bottle?

Get some REST! You're burning both ends again, and that's NOT good for you!

Koala77 06-25-2008 02:20 AM

Poor Yabbit! So sorry that you're feeling like carp.

Please know that I'll be thinking of you until we hear that you're feelin' better!

yeahbut 06-25-2008 05:38 AM

Thank you everyone! I went to both classes yesterday but was going to stay home and rest for one of them for I knew he was just going to lecture but something made me go..... good thing! He gave out the final exam as a take home test as a bonus for the people who stuck it out and came to class! Wheeee - I am so excited. We don't have class on Thursday just need to drop the final off before the end of class time. I had a final speech in my second class yesterday which I did on "Ending the 24 month waiting period on Medicare" and got an A+ - he was very impressed and told me he would write all legislature..... :) and a lot of people came to me during the break and also said they would too. I told him I couldn't make it to class on Thursday for I had to have my injection at the same time and he was fine with that. Wished me luck and said I did a great job on my speech once again. I was feeling crappy physically but all the great comments made me feel good emotionally!

I am a little nervous about the 3 days of injections - how is is going to make me feel? Will I get sicker than I am? Any advice on what I should do to prepare? Or should know before I get there?

Chambore - AMN & RW that sounds good to me..... when does the party start?

Koala77 06-25-2008 05:50 AM

Way cool on the speech! You rock, Char and that was an important awareness campaign no matter how small. Just imagine how capable you are when you factor in the fact that you were under the weather for that one! Excellent!!!!!

Injections or infusions (IV)? I only did the daily injections once and had no reaction to them that I can recall as difficult.

The only thing that the IV does to bother me (only a little) is the infamous "metallic taste" in the mouth. The fix for that is to keep a pocketful of rootbeer or ginger flavored candy. For some crazy reason it works to eliminate that odd taste sensation.

Other than giving yourself a chance to rest, which you already know! is to beware of the false high-energy day(s) that can fool you into a premature sense of victory. Even on the feel-pretty-good day, you must keep things low key!:hug::hug:

What she said, and feel better Char!

Jodylee 06-25-2008 04:29 PM

Oh Char I'm so sorry you've had to spread yourself too thin these days!!! The 'roids can be very interesting for me :D:eek:! I had the iv solumedrol for three days a while back. I only slept for a total of about 10 hours in 3 days :eek:! I drove my family nuts :D. I hope you feel better soon :hug:!

Riverwild 06-25-2008 05:03 PM

Ditto what everyone else said on the IV steroids. I never did injection steroids, but the IV kept me up for 80 hours or so... Beware the ugly angries too! Even the toothpaste cap set me off!

Rest, HYDRATE, and try to stay calm in the face of 'roid rage!!!

Glad to hear things went well with school!!

I'm getting a picture, in my mind, about this fight..:D:D:D

yeahbut 06-25-2008 07:36 PM

David was standing over my shoulder when I opened up the thread, he told me to tell you RW "Charlotte doesn't have an angry bone in her body, she doesn't know how to be me." I laughed.... :p

It took about an hour and a half to do the IV - I am really tired so I am going to head to bed and sleep while I can. She said it may make me wired but so far it hasn't. Crappy taste in my mouth but still tired!

Turned in my last test for the mod, classes are over!! :Dancing-Chilli::Dancing-Chilli:

Thank you for all your support and encouragment - as I and many have said in the past THIS PLACE IS THE BEST!

BaxterTheBunny 06-25-2008 09:31 PM

Oh hon  Hope you start feeling better soon.

Riverwild 06-26-2008 06:04 PM

LOL! Well Bless his heart!:p

Tell David that the man over heah said the same thing...until he saw me on roids...:D He treads very lightly now if I HAVE to take them. Last course, last year, before Tysabri, when we went on vacation to SC he BEGGED me to wait until all the festivities were over to start the orals.

They didn't have the same effect as the IV, thank goodness! The few times I felt it coming on, I just walked out the door and onto the beach and cooled down. I am now a firm believer that anyone who has to do IV should be awarded a beach vacation during the process!

SallyC 06-26-2008 07:21 PM

I hope you're feeling better today, Yabbit...

yeahbut 06-27-2008 05:28 AM

RW - I will tell him for sure.... today is my last day of IV's.

Sally - The numbness is still there but on the right side but I had one time during the night that my side was so numb that I had a hard time moving - so much better than the last week. And no charlie-horses at all! I was pretty wired and haven't slept much but I can take it if the rest goes away! Slow but sure I am ready

Thank you everyone for your hanging in there with me - the support has been great!

CayoKay 06-28-2008 01:36 PM

sowry I missed this thread, Yabbit...

I was lost in a fog of guests, chores, a giant new coldsore, and a vicious attack on one of our drakes by a jaguarundi... which meant we had to slaughter and pluck and dress... hours of unexpected work... so I missed my regular "board time"

I know how you feel, and completely empathize...

I tried to do what you're doing (when I was younger), work and school and family and then wriggle my way through flares with steroids.

the LAST time, was when my daughter smarted off to me after a horribly long day of work all day, then a night class, and crawled home to find a giant mess, then TRIPPED over her Easter basket of carefully-collected seashells, and hurt my foot.

and she snickered and mumbled "Clumsy..."

the 'roid rage kicked in (ulp!) and I KICKED the basket across the floor, I mean, really launched that suckah, scattering seashells, and breaking their lovely fragility to shards.

that was IT, and I felt soooooooo guilty, I never took the roids again... because
I'm usually so calm, and sweet, and nurturing... it felt like ALIENS had taken over my body, or perhaps the devil?

anyway, I second everybody's tips above, rest, rest, and more rest, and ease off trying to burn the candle at both ends (as somebody said above...)

and, WHOO HOO !! congrats on doing so well in school, Char, but don't everdo it, okay honey?

:grouphug::hug::grouphug:

yeahbut 06-28-2008 05:04 PM

Thanks Kay - no need to worry, hope you are resting now - are your guest gone? What a lot of work for you!!!

I snapped yesterday at the kid who cleans the cars at the auto dealership that I worked at because he complained 3 times in less than 5 mins in my ear shot about having to wait to register one of our rental cars for an hour and a half. On a Friday at noon time he was lucky that was all he had to wait!

I am not that kind of person and the picture of RW and her toothpaste cap! I tried the rest of the day to stay to myself so not to go off the handle again.

Thanks again everyone for your support - I need it!
