Approved for LTD!!!

Finally.....I got the call today that I was approved for LTD through my employer.

I haven't worked since the end of March. I've gone three full months without a paycheck. They will be mailing out my June check on Monday. Whew.........!

I was sweating it wondering how I was going to make it if they didn't approve me or there were more delays.

Now, I have to wait for SSDI to be approved. My LTD will cover me for two years. Hopefully SSDI won't take that long.

Just wanted to share my good news! :)

ewizabeth 06-27-2008 04:22 PM

Oh Kelly!

I am SOOO glad to hear this! It is a great weight off your back! Now you have time to deal with SS and their games.

I am so happy to hear that the insurance came through for you. If you can, will you post what insurance company it is and whether YOU or your employer paid the premium?

I have heard SO many horror stories about people who paid premiums for years to insurance companies for STD and LTD and got scrooood (:p) by their insurance company when the company refused to pay the STD and LTD.

ALL of my fiance's family women work in the insurance industry. One of them had a policy through the insurance company she worked for and she STILL goes through hellll every month with her insurance co. Her husband was diagnosed with an incurable lung condition and he ended up having a lung transplant and he died and three years later SHE was still fighting them for his insurance that was due from his LTD policy during his illness. They then refused to pay the death benefit from his combined policy until the first case was settled.

She had two young children, was diagnosed with a chronic illness herself and then she had to fight HIS battle and hers for years. It finally got settled, but it was almost ten years after he died. The insurance company is under court order now to PAY, and still, every month, they mess with her, telling her they lost paperwork and need more info and she has to go to this doctor for this eval and that doctor for that eval, etc. She's on SSDI now and they are still messing with her for that little bit they have to pay her every month!!

We all feel good about having insurance in place before diagnosis IF we have it, and then too many of us find out our insurance companies are garbage, so any input anyone has can make a difference when it comes to making a choice!

I have my disability policy through The Hartford Co. and I pay the premium, so I will owe no taxes if and when I ever collect on it. It provides 66.6% of my gross pay each week for STD and LTD and they pay for the lawyer if I need one to get SSDI and I DO have a payback clause. It was all that was offered and that was after 15 years at the same employer! The least they can pay me is $100.00 a week after SSDI goes into effect.

I TRULY wish now that I had listened to my dear departed Daddy and insured up when I was a fresh faced 21 year old. I also wish I had listened when he told me to put $2000.00 into an IRA when they first came out when I was 21!!!

Live and learn I guess!

That's great news. I am sure it makes you feel much better. I had to wait 3 months for mine to kick in too. Are they maintaining your health insurance and if so, for how long? Mine only did for a year.

It's the Hartford Co. and my employer paid all the premiums. I really can't complain - there was a 90 day waiting period and it's been just about that. The lady who worked with me was great. I only get 60% of my salary but to me that's wonderful.I receive this for two years. SSDI is in the works and they have already contacted me a couple of times with questions to clarify things on my application. Hopefully it won't take too long to be approved.

I feel like I can breathe now.....I was worried that something would delay things.

Thanks sooo much Kelly! Now I feel better about having the Hartford!:p

I am just so skeert that something will go wrong if and when I NEED the insurance! Mine went into effect three days before I got my diagnosis! I had only one clinically isolated syndrome at that time and if it wasn't for the eye doc insisting I go for an MRI and to see a neuro I may still have been in limbo now! I disclosed everything I knew at the time and they still insured me!

It was a little scary hearing all the horror stories. I immediately went online and researched cases where the insurance went into effect just before diagnosis and every one of the cases I found indicated that the insured person won! It didn't make me feel any better because I know every case is individual, but just hearing that you were approved helped me and I hope it will help others too!

So happy for you, Kelly.

I'm in a similar boat. Applied for SSDI in June. Have contacted my past employer about applying for LTD benefits. There is a 180 day waiting period, and I can't do much about the process until that date gets closer.

I hear so many horror stories. Is good to hear when something works out. :grouphug:
