Can you name this for me please?

Remembering that it's winter here in Australia at the moment, can one of you lovely ladies please tell me what this pretty little bush is that has burst into full bloom?

The flowers started out white, but now are turning mauve. It's about 2 foot tal but I have no idea how long it's been in the garden as we only moved in 5 months ago.

Here's a photo for you to look at.

babys breath anne???

braingonebad 06-28-2008 08:17 PM

I'm not sure but my best guess would be some sort of weigelia, and I doubt I spelled that right.

:o

Thanks Frank, but this doesn't look like the Baby's Breath that I know. Thank you though. I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Thank you Brain. I looked at some different photos of Weigelia (and yes you did spell it right) and I couldn't find one that looked like this.

Mine has tiny clusters of miniature white bells with dark centrers, the approx size being 2 pin heads to each bloom.

The leaf is a tiny straight one not unlike a pine needle . A forward slash / is about the thickness, shape and similar size, although the peice I'ce cut off has smaller needle type leaves.

Could it be lavender?

SandyC 06-28-2008 11:01 PM

No, it's not Lavender. We have that planted as a mini hedge between the roses, across the front of the house and into the first part of our driveway.

Yes it is pretty Sandy, and that's why I'm so interested in finding out more about it.

Before I can mail you a piece Shiney Sue, first we have to name it, then we need to find some-one in the Customs Dept who we can bribe, then we.........only joking Officer! :o

It kind of looks like maybe, possibly a type of lilac? Does it smell good?

tovaxin_lab_rat 06-29-2008 09:55 AM

It looks like Bridal Wreath Spirea from the photos.

Koala77 06-29-2008 06:33 PM

No perfume Sandy, I'm afraid.

I looked up Bridal Wreath Spirea and although similar, the flowers are not quite the same. I daresay my little bush is of the same genus and I'll have to be content with that.

Thank you FG others for your help.

When did you take the picture? Is it in bloom now? Can you take a closer picture of the flower and maybe the leaves for me? When I get home I will look at some pictures and see what I can come up with. It does look familiar I may be able to come up with the name...

Koala77 06-29-2008 07:39 PM

Thank you FG. Yes the bush is in full bloom and I only took the photo 2 days ago.

I'll see how I go with a close up, but my little camera is probably not the best for that type of picture. It's raining today, but I'll get out when it stops.

Thank you very much.

Could it be Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum http://www.monrovia.com/learn/plant_...em_number=7406

Look at this link and see if this is it.

No, that's not it FG.

The closest so far has been the Bridal Wreath one, so I still think it must be a variety of that genus.

I cut some off and tried to do the close up thing, but wasn't very successful with this little camera I'm afraid. Also the flowers are dying off now, so the following picture doesn't look so pretty in a close up.

Most of the flowers remained white while some turned pale pink, others went a dark pink/lilac in colour if that helps at all.

I placed a biro nib against the flowers to get you some perception of size.

Ah, that helped a lot...its common name is Wax Flower and we use it a lot in floral arrangements!!! It's botanical name is Chamelaucium uncinatum and is very common in Western Australia!

Thank you so much FG. I did look at that one on the web, and although it doesn't really look much like the bush I have, I'm sure you must be close. Either that or the Bridal Wreath.

The one you mentioned above is native to Western Australia and the sites I checked said that it grew there and north of Sydney in the humidity, where-as Tasmania (the southern state where I live) is the ice, frost and winter snow state of Oz.

Thanks so much for taking the time to try and name it for me. I really appreciate the time you put into it.

That last picture looks exactly like the Wax Flower that we use in our floral arrangements so I am sure that it must be some variety of that shrub. The flower and stems and leaves look exactly like it.

The color that you described is the same as well.

If you do a google search for Wax Flower and click on images you will find some pretty good pictures that look almost exactly the same.

Good luck! Happy to help you out!

I finally named the bush I was asking about. :D

I saw it at a nursery yesterday and it's an Australian native called Diosma, or Pink Breath of Heaven. No wonder you had trouble trying to name it for me FG, being an Ozzie native.

Thank you so much anyway. Your efforts were much appreciated.

That is a nice little bush! I found a virtual plant tag site, an expanded search goes indepth with zones, shape, foliage, height, etc.. I,m sure you'll find it there. virtualplanttags.com Good-luck.
