MonSter Attack!!!

I can't win for losing. I'm tapering off of my prednizone. I had been doing some better, but not back to normal. I've been feeling like my body was preparing to revolt against me...and sure enough, I woke in the night to complete loss of the left side of my body. It scared the begeebies out of me. Today, I am getting around some better, but still not well. I'm supposed to go Thurs and Fri all day to my daughter's college orientation I am going to have no choice but to rent a wheelchair. THIS SUCKS!!! I still have a few days left of tapering off the steroids. I feel like they aren't really doing the trick, just delaying the outcome...which really scares me! :(

SallyC 07-07-2008 12:56 PM

Ah, the stress of College Oientation. Been there, done that....and, in the middle of a heat related flare...Ugh!! I was actually in remission, except, for that hot stressful time.

I am so sorry that the Steroids aren't enough to do it for you..:( I remember, at the time, taking Robaxin....a wonderful muscle relaxant....and that seemed to help some and cool showers between sessions. I used a cane but a wheel chair is a much better idea....it will save you a lot of strength.

I hope this is just a temporary setback and once the stress is over, so will be, the Flare.

Hey F2Y~ Sorry you are feeling rotten. I too, remember the college days of my children. Those orientation days can be long, so take cooling devices and extra water. I hope you get to feeling better before you have to go.

I think a WC might be a good idea if you have to go to different areas of the campus. *we did w/my DD* take care and feel better.

the Bird 07-07-2008 09:29 PM

Hey Friend!

Don't forget to call and tell your neuro! Gotta take care of you!!!

Just think of the wheelchair as a new way of conserving your energy! You can even tell the kids you meet , "I'm saving up energy for my hubby, when she's all settled in here!!!" Did you grin...just a little bit?

Twinkletoes 07-07-2008 09:36 PM

Awww, that's the pits, Friend! :(

Heckuvatime for the MonSter to rear its ugly head.

I vote for the w/c too -- you'll save so much energy, like others have pointed out. Try not to feel bad.

I hope the steroids do their thing so that your body works like it should.

Many hugs to you! Have a good time with your daughter! :)

Jan4you 07-07-2008 09:55 PM

So sorry dear for ALL you are going through. I know you wish things could be better. I heard that sometimes you need to give the prednisone time to work. Hope that it does show some improvement for YOU!!!

AND.. yes ride that wheelchair as if you are the QUEEN and every one should bow with respect!! I mean this!!

You deserve to be taken for a "ride".. to be wheeled around. Sit up as if you ARE THE QUEEN!!!

Then this horrible monster cannot truly rule nor ruin your special time with your daughter.

Keep us posted k?
Because I care, Jan

weegot5kiz 07-07-2008 11:50 PM

i agree call neuro tell him or her, bad timing but maybe if its medra pak he might start you on a second medra pak he want to script more and put you back to 60 or 40 mg a day if its reg prednisone. I hope you get to feeling better real soon

D_HOLLAND 07-08-2008 07:32 AM

Maybe you need a 5 day IVSM - predisone never did help Chris much.

tovaxin_lab_rat 07-08-2008 09:21 AM

I agree with some of the others. Oral taper never did anything for me following IVSM, in fact the few times I did do the oral pred, it only made me sick.

Call the doc that rx'd the oral pred and let him/her know what is going on with you ASAP. They need feedback if they are to know how to treat you.

Good luck with the college orientation...stay plenty hydrated. Sounds like you're going to need it.

Keep us all posted, we care.

Twinkletoes 07-08-2008 09:24 AM

Wondering how you are feeling today, Friend. Sending hugs for you!:circlelove:

Friend2U 07-08-2008 09:57 PM

Thank you all,

The fact that there are so many of you who truly CARE... thank you for your thoughts and prayers. It does make a big difference with my state of mind.

It's actually tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday that we go. Tomorrow is a long day. We have the wchair. So I know this is the right thing to do. It's not really a choice at this point. Can't hardly walk to next room, muc h less across college campus.

You all help to make me brave. It is a really HUGE step. Wish I could say more, but can't hardly type.

I LOVE YOU ALL (TEARS...):grouphug:

tkrik 07-08-2008 10:26 PM

Friend - Sorry I am coming in to this late. I am glad you opted to get the w/c. It will make the orientation more enjoyable for you as well as DD. (Well, as much as an orientation can be enjoyable. LOL). And, you are getting a free ride and your seating is taken care of! How cool is that?

As others mentioned, I would call the neuro and let him know the oral steroids aren't doing anything for you. I can't remember what issues you were having with this flare. I do know, from my own experiences, that spinal flares take what seems like forever to go away but generally up to 8 weeks for me. Is that possibly what is happening to you?

As for tomorrow, try to put as much out of your mind as possible and focus on DD. Try to make the day about her as much as you can. I know this is very difficult to do and as moms with MS we have to force it but the our kids appreciate it so much when we do that for them.

Pack snacks, ice packs, and lots of water and have a great time. Let us know how it all turns out.

update...

my dd had a great day... i made it wed in the wc. but dh went with dd without me on day 2. so glad i made it day one and got to be a part of it.

i go tuesday to see my neuro. not sure what my options are. what do i do, just ride it out and either it will or won't get better? i'm very scared. have completely lost all use of left side o body. just keep getting worse.

hubby is doing good job caring for me. but it's suppose to be me taking care of him. i just want to keep saying i'm sorry,

i feel bad for my 16 yr old son. he and 18 yr old daughter re worried and should not have to be going thru this. it is not fair.

i know i'm whining...sorry...

tkrik 07-11-2008 07:37 PM

Friend - I am so glad you had a good day going to the orientation.

Whine all you want. It is OK. Let you DH take care of you for now. Once you are back up and running it will be your turn to take care of him. I am sure he wants to do things for you right now. I am sure DS and DD want to also. Allow them to do things for you as well. Honestly, it will make them feel better as well.

DD18 and DD16 have learned quite a bit in the past few years and it's OK. I was like you at 1st but since I'm a single mom (DBF and I don't live together) and there have been a few times, much to my horror as well as theirs, that they have had to help me in and out of the tub. (I think DBF would enjoy it far more than DDs;) lol)

There are times when they have give me massages to work out the back spasms, help me walk, etc. I do, however, encourage them to be teens too and I know they appreciate that. So they have to massage my spastic muscles before going to the movies with their friends. That is OK.

I do hope you feel better soon. It is scary to have these crazy things but you are not alone in this crazy stuff. We are all here with you and for you. Sending good vibes, prayers, and gentle right-sided cyber:hug:'s.

Debbie D 07-11-2008 09:28 PM

Dear sweetie,
I am glad you were able to attend some of your DD's orientation. Try your best to allow your DH to assist you. That's one of the benefits of being together--we get to help one another when it's needed.
I hope, also, that your neuro can help you with these debilitating sxs...please keep us informed...we're praying for you.:grouphug:

NurseNancy 07-12-2008 06:49 PM

i know this is hard but please try to let go of caring for others right now.
accept that you need to be cared for for at least right now. maybe that will allow you to rest and take some stress off yourself.

be gentle with yourself.
i'll be praying that your dr will have a plan for you that will make you better.

get well soon.

ewizabeth 07-12-2008 08:26 PM

I didn't read all the replies, but... make sure you don't have an infection related to the steroid treatment. That happened to me coming off the steroids once, and I could hardly walk. Turned out I had a "raging UTI" according to my PCP's nurse.

Feel better soon!!

tkrik 07-13-2008 09:41 AM

Friend - How are you feeling today? I am in hopes that you are starting to feel better.

SallyC 07-13-2008 02:03 PM

I'm glad Orientation is over and you were able to attend. Take care of youself, now, and I hope Doc has some answers for you.

Feel better soon.
