will be leaving soon...

Well the time is here! Our target date is Sat 12th.
But I have already started cutting back internet time.
We will be back sometime during the first week of September if all goes well.

It is a huge job getting ready, and organizing it.
This year we had the misfortune of having the City dig up our whole street, to put in new water main and sewer. The result was interruption of water service, not being able to park in front of our home (no usable garage), and having my garden torn up.
We've just put it back together. It was a huge painful project.

I am putting up my Vacation Avatar now, as a reminder.
If the weather is ugly on Sat we will postpone until Sun etc.
So you will see me here a bit longer, but not much longer.

These pictures show some of the work, and the final repair, we just did this weekend. I had to buy new stone at a stone yard, and while doing so, I almost fainted there... a new nasty development. I am hoping it was blood pressure medicine + the heat that day. But I am concerned, as I had 2 other events at stores recently! And my doctor wants MORE blood pressure medication, which we fought over last visit!

The first picture is the work crew digging up our front, including 36 inches of my garden (we park our cars in this spot) looking for our water service. They wouldn't listen to me so this took a few hours (it was done about 5 yrs ago when our main ruptured) They finally found it, and reconnected to the new main that was installed across the street.

First photo--- the digging for the water main and our water line.

2nd photo-- this is different view. I lost my last slate step, and the slate that served as a path along the road. This path is necessary for the winter, when ice and snow make it very slippery and dangerous to get to our cars.

3rd photo-- our repair. The stone I found just before my almost faint--- is a dark quartzite, a beautiful stone, with amazing glittering mica which when dry is just gorgeous. It does not show that in the photo, but believe me, it was worth the effort and .37/lb it cost.

We will try Wifi stuff again this year. Last year was disappointing, but if the library did indeed get it, and if the tourist center is working better, we may connect while intown doing laundry and buying food and other necessities.
If anyone has a specific question for me, please send a PM.
I can find it more quickly that way. I have found in the past it is almost impossible to find things in threads. There can be so many of those!
I will also check email before this forum, so those of you who have that can send emails.
I do NOT have all my files on the laptop (that is basically my husband's computer), so I am limited a bit on what I can do.
But still I can still read here a bit now and then, and perhaps have a helpful comment when needed.

I'll update this thread, when I actually leave.

I took two of our feline girls last Thursday to get their Rabies update vaccine.
Our 15 yr old Tippy had an almost fatal vaccine reaction to this...and I guess she just
used up one of her Nine Lives! So I am somewhat stressed this week. Tomorrow I will be
taking Sheba --20 yrs old for a check up, but NO vaccine...so I hope that goes smoothly.
She has lived 4 yrs longer than predicted 4 yrs ago...so I don't know what the vet will say or do.
I sure hope there is no push for euthanasia.!!! sigh.

Have a nice restful vacation, MrsD. I must admit that I am a little concerned over the issues you have described as happening when you are shopping. As I recall, your place is pretty much out in the boondocks. I do hope you are close enough to get medical help should you need this while you are vacationing.

The pictures of the street you live on are beautiful. If I lived in an area that was this pretty, my vacation might be sitting on my front porch looking at the beautiful trees and flowers...

Have a good time on the island--

--and see if you can keep all the critters harmonious (harder than it first appears, I know).

nide44 07-08-2008 08:39 AM

Have a good vacation, Mrs D.
I have an almost 18 y.o. Russian Blue-
I know what you mean about vaccines at that age.
Be well........Have fun

mrsD 07-08-2008 09:54 AM

This is what the vet said about Sheba....

Sheba has lost 3 lbs since last visit...over a 4 yr period.
We passed on the rabies vaccine. This cat is not catching any wild bats or other animals. She mostly is indoors now, or just off the porch area outside.

Her heart was not too great. A murmur and very fast (some of the high rate was anxiety I think)

But from a 1-6 rating the vet said she was a 4-- not good.
She seemed a little dehydrated and I don't understand that because we see her drink. And of course we had the ana[ gland thing done...the vet was not thrilled with that!:p

So we will take her with us...and hope for the best. She usually sleeps in the car, okay.

The vet suggested labs when we get back. We'll be doing that.

Hi. I hope you have a great time. Is this the place you go to every year? If I recall you showed us pics. Anyhow have a great time and I am sorry about your pets. That is hard I know. By the way you are so sweet to offer your help always even when you are on vacation.I was telling my mom about you and how you are better then all the docs I have seen in knowledge and care.Wish I could bring you to my apt tomorrow. Anyhow have fun

Vowel Lady 07-08-2008 02:59 PM

We just got back from 5 days away and I'm exhausted today! I guess my health issues don't lend themselves to being on the go.
Perhaps a longer one is much better...but the preparation and re-entry has got to be very DIFFICULT!
I do hope you can post now and again somehow.
You will be missed in a major way! (Sniff, sniff!)
Wishing you a wonderful , relaxing and fun time!!!!
p.s. Special hugs for kitty.

mrsD 07-08-2008 03:25 PM

after waiting at the vet's for eons...

I had to get a haircut...short for convenience washing etc up there.

Then I had to get my thyroid refilled...it was early but by some miracle the insurance let it go thru without a telephone override.

But the work crews have returned, and we had to move our cars...mega inconvenient with the trip and loading.
The 3 homes past us on the street did not get "done" properly and they are digging them up AGAIN.... the noise... the inconvenience...I can't stand this --- it has been 2 months of this!!!! At least they are not touching my property anymore...but it is upsetting and upsetting the cats too.

Well tomorrow is another day. <shrugs>

Silverlady 07-08-2008 07:45 PM

Ohhh Nooo...

You will be so very missed. But with all the noise, etc. it sounds as if you need to get away. I am just amazed at all the work you can do. Lifting stones...makes me faint to think of it.

The fainting is another issue. Be sure you keep the cell phone charged even while traveling. And please do check in with us from time to time to let us know the bears and coons haven't carried you off.

I know it's a lovely place because I have seen some of your pictures and I know how good it is for you. Please take care of yourself. There are a lot of people who love you here.

Oh, I had forgotten about all of the wonderful pictures. I know I am not alone in saying we would love to see more from this year's trip.

Hope your kitties do well and your street crews are FINALLY finished when you get back... With 2 months of having to listen to that racket and all the inconvenience, they city should be paying for your vacations!!!

We will miss you very much!

Take care,
Cathie

well Weather.com is showing

40% chance of afternoon rain on Sat. Sundays are problematic since the marina closes at 3pm...and we like them to be open when we arrive. So now my husband is talking, Monday.

In the old days, we only traveled on weekdays, because we drive older cars and if something breaks, there are no repair shops open up North on weekends!

But with our newer Toyota vans, breakdowns just are not happening anymore, so we have started going on weekends.

We just cannot arrive in the rain...too much loading of the boat and carrying stuff over and trying to open the shutters etc --it is just not good, and infact slippery and hazardous!

So we are in "hold" mode for now. Perhaps the forecast will change by tomorrow. I am packing still as if Sat is our target.

LOL... Billye...I didn't lift many stones...neither of us did ...
(we used to in the past).

My son came over for a day, both to remove the large ones in the beginning and put to them back 8 wks later. He was a big help! The other stones my husband used a wheelbarrow to move around. I did carry the flagstones and help position those--they weren't large. My biggest problem now is bending alot. I can only do that for an hour, and I am goners. I did alot of sitting in a chair and supervising however! LOL ;) I am sort of the "creative" consultant now.

My husband has good knees and can even kneel on them, so he does not bend. I have a nice cushion for him too.

mrsD 07-10-2008 09:50 AM

not leaving til Monday...

There are big storms forecast for upNorth thru Sat. Sat was updated to 70% chance of rain.

So I'll be here for 2 more days. :p

Besides Hubby is having his usual travel anxiety...so he feels better with a little delay.

stagger 07-10-2008 05:16 PM

mrsd,
Hope you experience the best vacation ever. I'm sure the wild critters are anxiously awaiting your return. With you gone it creates a large void here on the forum.
