Well I sit next to a big plate glass window in my office so I ran to the door fram (could not remember if thats for earthquakes or tornadoes.)

Then I realized my door is pretty much all glass so what good would that do?

So I stood in the hallay. :o

Curious 07-29-2008 02:20 PM

Bobbi 07-29-2008 02:43 PM

Doorway, but away from windows, is for quakes.

If in a vehicle, supposed to stop. (Learned that after I had continued driving during a quake.)

AfterMyNap 07-29-2008 03:11 PM

HOLY CARP WOMAN! Grab the bottle and find a safe place! Check in when you can.

SandyC 07-29-2008 03:21 PM

Yowsa!!! Stay safe and under cover! I agree with Cin, grab a bottle, a safe place and claim it!

Kitty 07-29-2008 06:11 PM

I was just watching the news coverage. I'm glad you're OK. I have a niece that lives in Berkley. I tried to call her but didn't get an answer...hope she's OK.

Ya'll stay safe and watch out for the aftershocks. Keep us posted on what's going on.

Victor lives out that way. Anyone heard from him? I'll have to check the other posts as he's probably already posted somewhere.

Keeping ya'll in my prayers. Don't ya wanna move to GA? :)

Jomar 07-29-2008 06:13 PM

The USGS site -
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/

stay away from glass & any tall or heavy things that could fall on you.
If you have a sturdy desk or table - get under it.

DM 07-29-2008 06:29 PM

Glad your'e ok, Shappy! Geez, what's w/all these earthquakes? When we had them in Illinois, I freaked!!!

Hope all is safe and HEY, nobody told me to grab a bottle when we had ours. Dang it, another missed moment!

THey are doing construction on our floor and the architect just walked through to check if anything was damaged from the quake.

I was talking to him about the quake and he told me that the doorway was a an old wives tale and that for a quake there was nothing structural that it would do for anyone.

He recommended finding a large object and laying on the floor next it that way in the ceiling or wall collapsed it would creat a pocket since the object you are next to would bear the brunt of it. So for next time I have a safe place picked out. :p Did I mention the architect was cute?

Kelly if I move to GA can I have my own room?

*passing whats left over in the bottle to DM* Drink up!

MelodyL 07-29-2008 07:07 PM

Now why do I think that I heard the following:?

"When in an earthquake, the safest place in the house is the bathroom, because of all the sound structural piping".

I could swear I heard that somewhere.

Bobbi 07-29-2008 07:50 PM

I wonder why FEMA advises people to get to a doorway - if it's a loadbearing one?

http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/earthquakes.shtm

Curious 07-29-2008 07:53 PM

i think i'd worry about any doorways that guy built.

If he's doing construction on the floor, why would you take advice from him about walls and ceilings???

Thanks Bobbi! Now I don't know who to believe. Cute architect boy or Fema. Not sure either have a good track record.

Very funny Nappy, very funny. :p

it would be kinda weird if the search and rescue party go look for you and all they can find is your princess crown...

Hehehehehe I just got it, you wanted me to make you a milkshake. Well I did and I drank it. It was good.

All is quiet tonight on the So cal front.

Hehehehee moi...cute archy boy. I better watch out DH is reading over my shoulder. He will be my large object tonight.

You can be sure that I will keep some shos under the bed tonight.

Darlene 07-30-2008 12:26 AM

Happy to hear you are ok. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Darlene:hug:

Bobbi 07-30-2008 12:30 AM

I think, I'd listen to a bit of both. As long as someone knows that it is loadbearing and can withstand a lot of weight, and it's safe to get to a doorway, I would. If that's just not a reasonable or safe thing to do, I'd opt for a different, but super sturdy object.

Interior/support walls are also supposed to be good to brace against.

In addition to windows, another must-stay-away-from is a fireplace. I didn't know about that and heard it today.

I suspect my laundry room is probably the safest here; it has no windows, is smaller than other rooms and has support structure; the space above (upstairs) hasn't collapsed so something must be supporting that space.

Bobbi 07-30-2008 12:40 AM

Shelley,

This is a "just wondering" type question: In your area are people advised to use braces and mount heavy objects direct to walls?

I've thought about it, only... what happens when it comes to moving (if renting or if selling)? Rip chunks of the walls away to remove furniture (e.g., Grandma's curios or china hutch) and mirrors or sell the objects with the house?

Curious 07-30-2008 04:00 AM

just like you should do for children, tether heavy furniture to the wall. it does leave a small hole where the screw goes it, but easily fixed.

Bobbi 07-30-2008 05:49 AM

:o I didn't know about children and tethering the furniture; no one has ever mentioned that to me. Maybe they just thought I knew. Didn't. Don't have any (children).

I've seen heavy metal braces used for securing objects to walls, only... those things will surely take out a good portion of dryway if the furniture/braces are removed.

Are the tethers plastic? I assure, I really ain't lame. I just haven't heard of this before.

Curious 07-30-2008 05:56 AM

hi bobbi,

the tether is made out of the same type of material like a seat belt. it's attached to the wall and the "object".

i'll see if i can find a picture. lol..i have some extra's i can take a picture of. they really are great. even for adults. my dad tipped a tall dresser over on himself when he lost balance. i wish we had thought it before that happened. :(

they come pretty much standard now in things like book shelf kits.

Curious 07-30-2008 06:01 AM

here is good link:

http://coloradochildproofers.com/chi...ure-safety.php

see where the toddler is about to pull the dresser over? the next picture shows the white tether.

Curious 07-30-2008 06:04 AM

i found an article on ehow.
how to earthquake proof your house. or if you plan on having teenagers over.
