Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeem!!!

My best friend thinks that "90% of people diagnosed with MS actually have Lyme Disease"; my daughter-in-law thinks that all diseases are caused by dehydration (she read a book) and MS can be cured by drinking water; another friend thinks I'd feel better if I "got out more", AND another relative is concerned that I will "convince myself" that I'm disabled.

Where's that banging head against the wall smiley when I need it???

sabimax 08-05-2008 07:01 PM

NurseNancy 08-05-2008 08:02 PM

i guess ignorance is not bliss.
and no knowledge is a dangerous thing.
people grasp at all kinds of things when they don't understand something.

it's too bad. do you have a family advocate that might go to a dr's appt with you and bring news back to educate others?

if not just ignore them. there's not much else you can do. sorry.

yeahbut 08-05-2008 08:09 PM

B2U - yesterday I got have you ever been around anything toxic? did you lead paint as a child? have you been tested for toxic chemicals in your body?

I wanted to scream and say yes, I have been tested for everything I can imagine -even lead!

SallyC 08-05-2008 09:07 PM

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......Bite Me.....Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Kitty 08-05-2008 09:09 PM

I know how exasperating people like this can be, B2Y. I have several in my family...apparently they are too busy to try to learn anything about my condition so they just continue to make dumb remarks.

Erin524 08-05-2008 10:06 PM

Water's the cure???

Why werent we told this? It's got to be a conspiracy between the drug companies and the doctors!

So, how do we use water as the cure? Does it have to be blessed by the Pope? Or shipped in from Lourdes, France?? Or does any water work? (tap, bottled, sparkling? distilled?? stagnant?)

Do we have to bathe in it, or just drink it?

These are things we MSer's need to know, so we wont wrongly become convinced that we're all disabled (or will be disabled)

Curious 08-05-2008 10:19 PM

didn't you ladies know if you would just put some lipstick on you would feel better?

my jaw dropped when i was told that. <------see

Erin524 08-05-2008 10:55 PM

But, I'm allergic to most makeup!!

Will Chapstick work?

kicker 08-06-2008 07:08 AM

My Philosophy (and I used it out loud on my BIL (LOL) is "If it weren't for the _______s we all be full of "carp", hm, hm, you know what I mean.

Well meaning people always offer their "Help" (Not that I ask) and tell me about a neighbor doing better now a doctor in another state has declared he really is Lyme-diseased, this same neighbor once was doing bee stings and it wasdid better. These things are mentioned once, turns out they're not really helping, I never hear about this stuff again. Ive been told about diet sodas (which I don't drink!!). eating right, juices, etc. . I've learned to smile and just say thank you with an eager to try their sage wisdom look on my face. Shuts them up. Everyone is an expert!! My job is not to educate them they're being idiotic.

kicker 08-06-2008 07:14 AM

I drink water (have for years(, and yes I pee often BUT I've gotten up out of my wheelchair, it was all in my head. 8-). I'm in a chair but can transfer. At restaurants I get up and get into the table chair. DH likes to exclaim then "It's a miracle!!!! She can walk!" We don't get out much.

Niko 08-06-2008 08:57 AM

Whenever I get into a discussion like that ... I pause, look over the person's shoulder and get a suprised look on my face... and then say this:

"Look! Bundt Cake"

once they look away, I'm walking the opposite way.

It works :)

I am surrounded by the Celiac groupies.

I DID a celiac diet years ago when i had cancer, and HATED IT . i didnt feel better, AND I was hungry, and HATED the cardboard foods. This was before gluten free isles in the stores. I MADE everything, and it was hard work.

I have a daughter who is gluten intolerant and takes the diet to the enth degree. She is soooo worried because i refuse to go back to gluten free. I have friend, neighbors and church ladies telling me I just need to not eat so much crap in my diet.

I am on an ORGANIC, pesticide, hormone free diet. Most of what i eat comes from either my garden or the farm next door. Grass fed chickens, cows, and milk. I NEVER eat processed foods or high fructose corn syrup. MSG is out, and i MAKE all the food we eat. How I can I do better than that?

Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to take my salve covered, bee stung body over to the liquior cabinet for some mango steen juice and monavie. SHESSH!

FinLady 08-07-2008 09:23 AM

There's a T-shirt out there that I'm saving up to get. It's perfect for these situations. It says...

"My disabling chronic condition is more real than your imaginary medical expertise"

There's quite a few people I want to wear this around. :D

I might have to get my mom that t-shirt. We've gotten some looks before. (she looks fine walking if she's got a walker or a shopping cart to hold her up)

That reminds me of a job application story . . .

I was in New Zealand, and wanted to stay for about another year. I applied at this Car Rental place (like Budget) for a managerial position, through an agency. I was more then qualified for the job . . .

The agency called and said I didn't get it. When I asked if she knew why, she said "the GM thought I didn't wear enough lipstick".

Fast-forward a few months, after landing a very pretigious and high-paying position somewhere else, low and behold this "GM" comes knocking at my door for our business. His face dropped when he saw who I was.

After his spiel, I promptly reminded him that "I don't wear enough lipstick to be a good business associate". :D

What comes around, goes around. ;)

Cherie

OK everybody out there, it doesn't matter WHAT you have, I know JUST how you feel, because I feel EXACTLY the same way! I KNOW you've been diagnosed with MS and I haven't, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that

...the overheating problem is just menopause
...the pain is probably arthritis, we ALL have it at our age
...the fatigue is because you stayed up late, like me
...the bad balance is low sugar
...the cognitive stuff happens to EVERYBODY
...the muscle spasms are because you don't drink enough water
...the numbness and tingling is because you slept funny
...the pain around your torso is because your bra is too tight
...your eyes are blurry because none of us are getting any younger
...and I know what you mean about Walmart syndrome, it's that stupid music they play in the store
...and the white spots on your MRI is because the doctors are in cahoots with the big drug companies, and they just TELL you that stuff so they can get your money.
