our world
I am watching the Olympic opening ceremony...and it has brought tears to my eyes.
I am not referring to the heat of competition or polarity of politics... I am not referring to the breathtaking fireworks or magnificent music... I am not referring to the elaborate costumes or the magnitude of numbers... I AM referring to the beautiful tapestry of humanity that has gathered in one place at one time... Though the colors and language and costumes may vary...it just makes the tapestry more beautiful as the threads blend together for 17 days.... I think it is awesome. |
what amazes me, these athletes, as they enter the stadium, look at those smiles, like they are little kids in a candy shop, to see their excitement, through just a smile is worth watching it
|
I agree, I'm watching it as well and it's just purely beautiful.
:) |
Spanish Moss is "da wife" :)
all politics aside...the tapestries of people are beautiful, aren't they?? Makes us want to sing: "We Are The World" :grouphug: |
Mom and I are planning on going to the 2010 games in Vancouver, either that or planning for 2012 in London:)
|
I am watching as well and I feel just pure joy and pride for the chinese people right now....for their beauty, their artistry and their humanity...BRAVO BRAVO!!! :grouphug:

Wow..the drums, the printing blocks, the oars all done with people, regular chinese people their most precious resource... this is history.
The symbolism is just beautiful. I am speechless and in awe. |
i am watching 4 live events at same time on line its pretty cool you can find the event you want to see and when it will be playing on line and on your tv provider(cable)
|
I am of course rooting for the American Athletes but when I saw Yao Ming and the little kid, Ling Hao that survived the earthquake, I just had to smile....
and watching all the athletes smiling.. :D ...especially those from those repressed countries...reading some of their stories on line has been....WOW.... I am heavily rooting for Dara Torres. She is 41 and the fastest she's ever been and the controversy of her using steroids and such is driving me crazy. She's been tested negative and sure, it is not fool proof but I saw her workout schedule. She's pumping some serious iron. I totally believe she has dedicated herself to working out hard and thriving herself and until they test her positive for steroid use, I am going to believe that she is clean. she is speaking for us old folks that if we have the will, we can do it.. of course, she is nice on the eyes also....ummm...hey, I am going to watch it with da wife...LOLOL |
when they interview the 7 foot 6 inch Yao, he said he almost cried when he walked in with that little guy. right now i am watching sabres on tv and team handball premlims on my pc

The opening ceremonies were awesome. The excitement and pride of the athletes was contagious. My husband was wondering why Yao Ming wasn't smiling, but it looked pretty obvious to me he was about to break out in tears. What a moment for him.
I hadn't been following who would be attending the Olympics, so I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw Dwayne Wade (basketball)! He's our hometown pride, and attended the same high school I attended. My son went to school with him, and they played on the football team together. With everything he has going on in his life, he managed to make it back home before school let out to play basketball with the kids from the school. :) I laughed at the trivia over Estonia. Back in 1912, Estonia and Finland made a world record - they wrestled for 11 HOURS. :p Some of those countries are so small, it must have been overwhelming for those athletes to see so many people in one place. The finale was absolutely spectacular. Let the games begin. |
I want to know why they don't do the Olympics in NYC.
They did the World's Fair in 1965 and I went ot it. Had a ball. You better believe that if they put any Olympics here in NYC, I'd go there with the Access-a-ride. Like that's ever gonna happen!!!! lol |
An intersting fact from last night's broadcast....the viewership was huge...highest rated offshore summer opening ceremony in TV history!
|
here you go Anne and Cherie

I didn't get to see the opening ceremonies, but I watched some of the events tonight and my favorite thing is this...
you see an athlete....asian or hispanic or african or...anything...and they are named Brad and Amber...and I think we are truly a melting pot. If not for the uniforms, we could be anyone. I love that you can't tell an american athlete by anything other than the uniform...it makes me proud. Of us...of the world... ( and the Canadian are the same way...and Australia... and for all I know several other countries too...but I am an American and so that is my perspective) |
wow too weird I was gonna post on here same thing, this morning with TV volume down i was watching a soccer game US vers Netherlands, I miss the intros so had no idea which team was which, and as I watched I could not figure it out because the Americans are so diverse and so many ethnics and nationalities mixed into one, yesterday the US womens volley ball team was coached by a Chinese lady and they beat china in the match, and if i am correct she is from china by birth, and may of even been on the Chinese team for volleyball not sure about that though. it is a neat thing, shame folks just cant see we ALL came from somewhere else, we were all new at one time and all different yet so much the same, we all desire love, family, friends and health
It is something i thought of this morning I really could not tell which team was which till someone scored, glad i am not only one who saw this, Duck go on line NBC.com and then to their Olympic coverage you can watch some of the spectacular opening ceremonies |
Ducky - what you just said reflects my thinking exactly. I love the DIFFERENCES in our cultures and costumes and languages - they add color and texture. But love the SAMENESS that we all possess that allows us to unnderstand and embrace the differences if we just gice it a chance.
We all live on this realtively small planet...we are all in this together. That is one of the great things about the Olympics to me. |
if I was to close my eyes, and can only listen to the games on the radio...
...only the true spirits of the sportsmanship itself would matter...and that's really what's behind it all... would like send our condolences to the Bachman family... (mel, I think with the price of real estate in NYC that and the limited amount of space might be the reason why...but what do I know...LOL ) |
The basketball game between U.S. and China was so much fun to watch this morning. WE WON 101-70 - WOOOHOOO! It still feels so surreal to watch Dwayne Wade play on the "big stage."
I met him when I was registering my son for high school. My son had already started practicing with the football team, but he was home sick that day. While waiting in line I noticed the kid behind me wearing a football jersey. I mentioned my son's name to see if/how well he knew my son, and Dwayne said some very nice things about my son. I was impressed with his level of maturity and ease in talking with me. Usually kids are a little aloof or awkward when having to address an adult they don't know. Not only was he friendly, he was sincere. :) I went home and asked my son if he knew Dwayne Wade. He said, "Uh, yeah, he's only the star jock at the school." That scored even more points in my book with Dwayne. Every star jock I'd ever known was a little arrogant and full of himself. We attended all the sporting events at the school, and it was obvious it wasn't just his "star power" that everyone liked. :) It's such a thrill to see him shine at the Olympics. I hope my son is able to watch these games. The next game is on Tuesday, against Angola. :) I've done caught the Olympic fever. :p |
I had tears in my eyes today when the two female athletes in the shooting event hugged and kissed each other on the cheek....
You may say this is no big deal.... It was a HUGE deal... One was Russian... the other... Georgian. It was absolutely beautiful!! They again hugged and kissed cheeks on the podium. I think it's wonderful how these wonderful athletes accept each other for who they are and the talents that each possess.... and politics are kept out. For some reason... I can't get this song out of my head.... It's a small world after all.... :) Abbie |
cool beans abby I missed that
|
I'm hoping Iowa's own Shawn Johnson does well. She's a sweetie. Shawn Johnson
|
So far the U.S. (basketball) has beaten China, Angola, and Greece! WoooHooo! Wish I could have caught the games against Angola and Greece. :(
Tell me this kid (Dwayne Wade) isn't fun to watch :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpsiXARHBfU |
