Olympics!!!!!!!!!
I'm exhaustd watching the opening ceremony for 4.5 hours but it was wonderful. I even enjoy watching the looooong parade of nations. I think the most touching thing was the tall basketball from China who was their flag bearer. When China had that bad earthquake that killed 70,000 people, you know most of them were children. This one little 7 year old boy was rescued out of the rubble and he had to immediately started trying to find others. He said that he was a leader in his class and a hall monitor so it was his duty to help. Anyway, they had him walk along this big tall 7.5 foot basketball plaeyer the whole way.
I felt sorry for the swimmers. They are one of the first competitions tomorrow so most of them did not march in tonight. NBC has the Olympics on tomorrow from 9 AM to 5 PM then again at 7 PM! I like waht Tom Brokaw said tonight. He said that of all the nations represented in the Olimpics only a very small percentage of them will go home with any medal so tonights ceremony is their 'time on the pedestal' for them. It's their glory moment. |
I watched the ceremony too. Wow it was long. I love the parade of nations and I guess I'm one of those that lets each olympian have their "moment on the podium" while I watch.
The NBC/Universal owned stations (7, I believe) will have coverage. NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, USA that I can think of do for sure. The overnight coverage is great for us insomniacs. GO TEAM USA! GO TEAM AUSTRALIA! (for our Koala) |
me too to see those smiles on all the athletes faces is worth it, right now i am watching the females judo competition on line, while I type on here, me and deb watched it on a small tv in our room I also recorded the rebroadcast tonight so we can see it on the HD tv, when he ran the final leg of the torch up top along the wall, that was so cool
good luck london topping that beginning |
Thank you MSacorn for remembering this little Koala.
If Koala's country isn't competing in the event that she's watching, then she'll be barracking for the country that her board buddies come from. :D Aussie, Aussie, Aussie...........Oi, Oi, Oi! . . |

Did anybody watch the women's volleyball match between Russia and OZ last night. That was so exciting, I had to watch it from the kitchen (instead of close-up in the livingroom). :D The winter olympics are coming to Vancouver in 2010, so y'all will get to see my home town then. :) Cherie |
I am watching for the very first time right now. I am sad to hear about the USA men's volleyball coach's family. His father was killed last night and mom is in critical condition. :-(
|
I watched the marvelously spectacular opening ceremony, but alas, pooped out, to watch the parade of Nations.:)
Go USA....and AUSSIES, when they're not playing the USA..:D |

Yes, Sandy. Was also sad to hear of the volleball coach's family.
I'd hoped to see the swimmers in the march last night. Didn't catch their events this morning. Am a huge Dara Torres fan. Watched her in the 2000 Olympics. She was considered old, then, at age 33. And, now she is competing at age 41! DD18 was 10 years old when we watched Dara and Jenny Thompson and Michael Phelps in 2000. She had just started competetive swimming less than a year before. Anybody remember Eric Moussambani, a swimmer from Equatorial Guinea? He gained entry to the Olympics without meeting the minimum qualification requirements via a wildcard draw designed to encourage developing countries without expensive training facilities to participate. It took him more than twice the time to finish his 100m swim than the winner of the event. My daughter, an average 10 y.o. swimmer, swam at approximately the same speed as he did, at the time. Was inspirational, to see someone who did not have the training or experience, to be willing to compete on a world stage. I also watched the 2004 swimming events, but have not enjoyed watching Olympic swimming ever as much as in 2000 at Sydney. ~ Faith |
What a day. Koala, Aussie did you proud today in swimming. Some of our swimmers weren't to happy about it, but it's the Olympics! I started out the day watching our young 3 fencers take a medal sweep. I don't even know what fencing is but that's one reason why I like the games. I may not be very popular to say this but I don't like Micheal Phelps. Does that make me un American? I think he's to cocky.
I guess what I enjoyed the most was our young mens gymnastic team. None of them have ever been there, two of them were alternates. One of the alternates had never been in the stadium before performing. But wasn't he wonderful on the pommel horse! I feel so sorry for the Chinese team. They feel it is their civic duty to do well. I told my daughter that that is one of the reasons for her oldest daughter to watch the games so she cna talk to her about our freedoms and also the pride all the athletes have and how an underdog can win and how a swimmer from an underdeveloped country can swim, take a veeeery long time to finish but still be cheered on by the whole stadium. Just because he came and finished. Can you tell I love the Olympics? I just found out on the NBC web site all the live things I can watch on the internet!!!! |
I watched batmitten (sp?)yesterday, singles and doubles. It is alot more competitive then I remember from playing as a kid in the backyard. How cool.
|
Last night, watching the swimming was awesome! Rice was so incredible ;) and Coventry! Wow! And our Katie Hoff. :D What a race. I was sitting on the edge of my seat watching that race. And our women's relay team. Good job! :D
And then watching Michael Phelps. The pride in his mother's face. Watching the gymnastic competition is always inspiring. Such strength, especially in the still rings. Just watching their faces as they hold the positions for 2 seconds. I watched the fencing the night before, and was somewhat confused. I watched Ward and saw more protests than fencing going on. Of course, I admit I don't completely understand the sport as they compete in the Olympics with all the electronic gear on. But I would think with all that electronic gear it would make a "hit" pretty easy to score. I am happy that they swept the category, but didn't understand the scoring concept. Oh well, maybe I need to read more about it. Maybe this new electronic process has taken away the "sport" of fencing -- at least for me. So far, I've enjoyed watching. Go Team USA (basketball is on right now) |
i have been watching a lot of the competitions on the internet, the badminton, yowser, i would get hurt playing anyone of those players
many years ago in PE class we got stuck with badminton for 6 weeks and we had the badminton coach as our teacher, well we all joked about oh no badminton please dont hurt me... well coach went and got 3 of her female players and promptly shut all of us guys up real quick, as they severely beat our tails off. I found out a long time ago it can be a hard game to play, as for the one American complaining about every hit on the fencing i turned it off her behavior bother me a lot, i felt it was very unsportsmanlike its one thing to complain once or twice to get your point across but every single time that bugged me. and the Chinese men gymnast wow talk about strong and so precise. Phelps mom was great, lol he had that race by a fair distance and when he was a foot from the wall she was still screaming go go go go, that was great, you are right she was so proud, as are a lot of parents i am sure |

I was disappointed that Kris Armstrong didn't do as well as expected in the bike ride. But all that rain! And the spill in the beginning of the race! But she still has another bike race to go! She calls Idaho home! Go Kris!!! :D |
Man, Jim and I watched this all day today! We were fixated on the swimming comps. It was like poetry in motion.
|
Another wonderful day in the land of the Olympics. That synchronized diving is fantastic. Of course I jump off a diving board and I don't think I could synchronize that with anyone. I guess tha race of the day though has to belong to the mens 4x100 realy. I know that Phelps has this crazy dream of winning all thses medals but I don't think they did enough microphone time to the guy that actually won the race for them. I know that if Phelps hadn't started them out the way he did that they wouldn't have won it but the team was behind and that last guy swam his legs off to come from behind a touch a mucro second ahead of the other guy.
Of course one of my favorite things to watchg is the girls gymnastics. Gheez, those girls from China looked tiny! We took some mihgt bad spills but am glad that the qualifying round is over. Did the Australians enter a girls team? I tried to find out on the NBC website if there was one but I couldn't find it. I guess I could go to the official Olympics website. Why didn't I think of that before. Now there's another website for me to browse around for several more hours of my day! Mondays are always busy with doing things for our Moms and since my sis has her surgery on Tuesday I scheduled my phototherapy for tmorrow. So I have the DVR recording pretty much everything for tomorrow and Tuesday. Of course I don't know when I'll have a chance to watch it! Koala, the Aussies did you proud in the pool today!!!!! |

Yes, WOOHOO for the Fab Four!!:D
|
The backstroke was pretty intense last night, it's amazing.
I noticed that they're still using the leggings and it makes me wonder about some of the older, unbroken records. What if those guys had had all the newer tech on their sides? Talk about amazing! |
Just a little name-dropping here  :). My oldest son, Jesse, is an asst mgr at a local gourmet grocery store and he knows Dara Torres pretty well :D. She lives and trains here in Coral Springs\Parkland! He says she's a really kind person and a great tipper to the baggers :D. She is amazing! A great role model for women of all ages, IMHO. Does anyone really believe that the TINY Chinese gymnast (I can't remember her name at the moment) is really 16?!? I think she can't possibly be more than 13 or 14 and that's being generous...hmmm.
|
Congrats to all the Medal Winners...Yeaaaaaa USA for the Gold in men's and women's individual swimming last night/this morning..:D
Congrats Aussies...for rowing Gold!! |
I didn't get to watch all the Olympics tonight. My sisiter didn't get out of recovery from her mastectomy untill 9 PM. We are pooped! But I got home in time to watch the girls gymnastcs and the mens 4x200 relay. I hope Michael Phelps takes all those guys out for a big steak. They are really working hard for him to get his record golds. I couldn't believe that world record time they swam that in.
Felt so sorry for the one girl on the gymnastic team. Last nihgt the guys felt so honored to get the bronze. Tonight they girls felt let down cause they got the silver. We still have all the individual competitions and the all around to go. That Shawn Johnson has got to be just the cutest thing! The interview with Caroli or whoatever his name is, his wife is the head coach. He really has a thing about the Chinas girls team. I just wish there was way that he could prove it. When you compare our teenagers against theres there is just no comparison. Our girls have curves in all the right places and really look like teenagers. There girls look like they could go to school with my 7 year old grandaughter. |
ok when i read on line about syncronized diving i said whattt????
you got to be kidding me, then i watched the chinese and aussies and mexicos team i was like wow that has to be pretty hard to work on |

I swear, Doydie, that oine wee little china doll is just getting her second teeth..:D I don't care let em take all the gold they want.....I think they should be painted red, though..:D
Way to go for the Gold, USA Men's & Women's Swim Teams. WOOHOO!! |
These games are going to be the death of me. Here in Indiana it ended at 12:30 AM!!!!!! But I am a late sleeper. I wish our guys could of done better in the all around but I am so glad for our alternate. I just love to watch him on the plmmel horse. They said that it would probably qualify him to compete in teh individual competitions. Oh my, that means another late night for me. Tomorrow night is the girls!
On a side note, we bought our furniture for our family room tonight. We have never paid that much money for furniture but it seems good quality and my husband fell in love with it. Now we just need to get a contractor to do the work for us! |
Here's kind of a belated brag for me. Carolyn Bruce was an Olympic swimmer in the 2004 Olympics. She was from Wichita, KS -- real close to where I live. She trained with, and swam for Wichita Swim Club for years. She is about four years older than my daughter.
My daughter sometimes competed in the same events as she did, in Wichita. They were never in the same heats, however, as Carolyn was always in the top heats, and my daughter was not an elite swimmer. It was awesome to see her compete, especially in the breast stroke, which was her best stroke. Carolyn's sister, Jamie, is also an excellent swimmer, and was in the same grade as my daughter. They also competed against each other, both in club swimming, and in high school swimming. My daughter didn't actually know either of them, though. A slight change of subject -- Carolyn's dad, George, was the president of the Missouri Valley Swimming LSC, of which Kansas is a part of. Unfortunately, in 2003, my daughter was in a car accident on the way to a 3-day swim meet in Lawrence, KS. Her coach was driving. She was his only passenger. My husband and I were going to go up later, after work. On the way, they were in a car accident. He hit a semi truck head on, and was killed instantly. My daughter was air-lifted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita, where she was admitted for 2 days. She had a minor concussion, and required stitches in her forehead, where a broken windshield had cut her, but otherwise, she was OK. George called us several days after the accident to talk about insurance issues. He was very kind, and very nice. ~ Faith http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Bruce |
I guess I don't have anything to brag about:( My son in law has a book that's all about how a person can have their name related to someone else. Like person A knows person B. Person B has lunch with person C. Person C sat next to person D on an airplane. So therefore person A knows person D. Maybe I can find someone who knows some who knows someone who knows someone. So therefore I know them! Whew, that made me tired just think that up.

An addition to my most recent post:
The breast stroke kick is sometimes referred to as the "frog kick". Our interim coach (she took over for a period of time, after Coach Jim died), used to say that Carolyn Bruce's body (former Olympic swimmer) was just built for that stroke. When she stood, her legs sort of bowed out, from the knees down, and actually looked somewhat like a frog. Like I said earlier, how awesome it was to watch her execute that stroke! I always thought that the breast stroke was the most beautiful and graceful of the 4 competitive swimming strokes. I didn't even think of going to the Oympic Trials this year in Omaha. Isn't so far from here. I wish I would've thought of it. My DD18 and I would've enjoyed watching them. DD considered swimming in college, but just didn't want to put that much time into swimming, and not be able to come home for Thanksgiving, and have to go back early at Xmas, etc. College sports require a lot of commitment. She swam competitively for 9 years, but was a fairly average swimmer, and did not do as well in HS, as in previous years. ~ Faith |

thurs night 11 pm central time OK what has NBC got against keeping the camera out of these girls faces leave them alone let them get ready and let them walk themselves through their moves, I can not believe how rude that is and how annoying it must be for them.
|
I guess those girls have to have such a great ability to concentrate. They have to zone out all the noise, the music from the floor excersize, looking at other scores and dwelling on their previous mistakes. Last night the camera was zooming into watching one of the Chinese guys vhange form his shorts into his long pants. You could tell that he put his shorts up on his lap as he was trying to put the long pants on. The camera was with him every step of the way. Give the guys some privacy.
I was so proud of our girls tonight. I can not imagine experiencing that with my Dad as my caoch. During the competition he had to be her coach and give congratulatory hugs. It wasn't until the very end that he could let himself give her a good ol' Dad hug. The Aussie team is pretty impressive in the pool tonight. |
yayy for our swimmers tonight! :) and i felt so bad for the girl who fell off the vault. but good for her for getting back up again! :)
|
Phelps blew me away all night. The medley was incredible and I found myself at the edge of my seat (my own version of the games).
I can't remember his name, but the Japanese guy who is such a dynamo in the breaststroke is absolutely amazing, his whip kick is like an explosion, anyone else notice how dynamically he rises on every stroke cycle? Incredible power and endurance! |
Michael Phelps did it!!!!!!! HooooooRah!!!!!!
|
Congratulations to Michael Phelps. At first I didn't like the guy, but I'm coming around!!!!! He seems like a genuinely nice guy. I still think he needs a set of teethe to match his mouth. I think his Mom has gotten almost the amount of airtime that bhe has. To be able to share such a moment in a childs life is priceless. Congrats to Dara Torres also. She is such a Mom. Yesterday she wouldn't let the semifinal start until one of the other swimmers was there! What other kind of award did Phelps recieve tonight?
Now onto track and field. I ususally let myself get all wrapped up in that to. We finally got our contractor for our family total redo and he starts Monday at 8 AM!!!!! I am not a morning person especially with these Olympics that are ending after midnight. But now I know that I can set the DVR to record and have plenty to watch during the day while the guys are working. I have never written the amount of checks I've written this week. We definitely have used our government stimulus check. |
And those Aussies!!! Incredible! Dara Torres was incredible too.
I couldn't believe the Marathon. :D |
