Backyard wedding for my kid

I despise shoe shopping and clothes shopping. Yet that is exactly what I did today. Actually, I did some of it yesterday through the Coldwater Creek catalog (expensive, yes, but I like their stuff and it's a wedding!).

The wedding for my kid is on Friday. It's a backyard wedding, so it's casual. Guys are wearing khaki pants and white shirts. Last year, my daughter got married on the beach. It's not as informal as that--I wore a sundress for that one!

The things I liked in the catalog were only CATALOG items, so being stupid, I ordered each thing I liked so that I could try them on and find ONE thing I liked.

Help me out here. Tell me what you think! I have a tendency to stay away from bright colors. And what I was leaning towards, the ladies at the store told me I shouldn't wear although they said I looked nice in it. It took 4 of them, but they picked an outfit out (and jewelry cuz I don't really have any to speak of) and then they forced me to go get shoes that would fit the outfit.

This one looked blechy:http://www.coldwatercreek.com/Produc...sembleid=47805

I liked this one (fishy dress):
http://www.coldwatercreek.com/Produc...sembleid=47684

They liked this one but said it was too fall and that I shouldn't wear it (skirt set):
http://www.coldwatercreek.com/Produc...sembleid=47795

And this is what they picked out for me (their choice):
http://image.coldwatercreek.com/spcr.gifhttp://www.coldwatercreek.com/Produc...sembleid=47478

The two ladies at the store said they hadn't seen anyone who had looked nice in that top and that I was the first. And there was an older man there with his wife who said that it looked really nice on me.

But....... but........ it's so BRIGHT!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I don't wear flashy colors. see: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/at...7&d=1217023809

Do you think I could get away with it?

tovaxin_lab_rat 08-13-2008 07:55 PM

None of the pictures show for me so I can't give you an opinion!

:p

Gazelle 08-13-2008 08:00 PM

I had to redo the links. ;) They should work now.

Gazelle 08-13-2008 08:05 PM

My kid just called. He said they were thinking of doing the rehearsal at 4 or 5 tomorrow because dinner will be at 6. They JUST decided this.

I have to work tomorrow. I can't get off until 4. So I'm going to miss the rehearsal. :(

!$^@^ #@$# !^$@#

I HOPE they change their mind about the time. :(

NurseNancy 08-13-2008 08:10 PM

i can't get the links either gazelle.
safari won't open the page.

maybe you could get out an hr earlier?
i hope you enjoy the wedding.
they must be so stressful.

megveg 08-13-2008 08:12 PM

i LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEE the one they picked, you can pull it off, its REALLy pretty :)

tovaxin_lab_rat 08-13-2008 08:12 PM

Fishy one looks best. The one they picked ISN'T you. Nope.

Gee, are you surprised about the rehearsal?

lady_express_44 08-13-2008 08:16 PM

The links aren't working for me either. Maybe they are having intermittent problems with their site.

Cherie

Koala77 08-13-2008 08:17 PM

I rather liked the "Fall" one that you're not permitted to wear. It wouldn't suit me, but it has a nice wedding type look about it.

I agree the chosen one is a bit bright, but unfortunately I don't know you so I have no idea what would suit your personality. Did they not have the "chosen one" in another colour?

Remember.....whatever you choose, some-one's going to be taking photos!

Gazelle 08-13-2008 08:18 PM

4 Attachment(s)
Ok, I did it another way.

First one's the blechy one.
Second one's the fishy one.
Third one's the too fall one.
4th one's the one they picked out.

Gazelle 08-13-2008 08:21 PM

Thanks Judy. :) I am sure I will. My son and I picked out a great dance for our dance. He's a good kid.

Megveg, thanks for the vote of confidence. It's going to take all I have to get into that outfit and wear it! It's so bright......

Yes. That's not my son or his fiance. They aren't like that.

I think so, Cherie. I had trouble getting on when I saved the pics to upload them here.

Thanks, Koala. No, they didn't have another color. Some would say I'm a bit outgoing, but I really am a wallflower in a party. So a bright color.....well, that would just draw attention and I don't really like that.

Whatever you decide on, you will look gorgeous! You always do!

tkrik 08-13-2008 08:26 PM

I think some of these would work just fine if you don't like wearing dresses.

Thanks, tkrik. I like the tuxedo style one but I just don't think I'm going to have time to get back to the store tomorrow. The funny thing is that my son's fiance's color is pink. That would match well.

I'll have to blow home from work, pick up my dogs and pack quickly (if I don't do it in the morning), and drive 1.5 hours to my house in another city. That so I can make the dinner at least if I can't be at the rehearsal.

lady_express_44 08-13-2008 08:45 PM

I like the fall one best too, but if it isn't gonna work . . . . :(

I really like the red and white outfit as well. If pink is the color for the wedding, red would be a really nice compliment. I think it would be nice with your coloring (hair/skin) too.

You have feel comfortable though . . .

Cherie

Taffy 08-13-2008 09:37 PM

Wow...you would look cute in anything.:D

I like the fishy dress. Don't have to worry about slobbing stuff on it as much, but...

you are the mother of the groom so, I would go with the awesome red and off white number.

Either way...you will be stunning.

What's to eat?:D

Finally my specialty...shopping!!!!!!! :D

I really like the one they picked out for you. The colors are great and a casual yet elegant look.

2nd choice would be the fishy dress.

SallyC 08-13-2008 10:04 PM

I agree, the bright one is best. Be sure to post a pic, here, of you in it..:)

KajunButterfly 08-13-2008 10:54 PM

I love the one that was chosen for you! I like Coldwater Creek also...might have to order that outfit for myself. My second choice would be the "fall" one.

Carolina 08-13-2008 10:56 PM

I like Nos. 1, 2 and 3 with No 2 being the favorite. My first reaction when I saw No 4 was that it was typical old lady attire. I've seen pictures of you and you appear much too young to wear something like that.

That's part of my problem in addition to it being bright. I've never been known as graceful, so I'm bound to get stuff on the pants especially.

NOW you're talking, Taffy! They're having a yummy menu. Got to go to the food tasting to pick out stuff. It was months ago, but we picked a great menu. One of the things is a chipotle something or other..... well, I'll have to let you know AFTER the wedding. But it was ALL good and I know that my H and I got two different meals on purpose so we could share 1/2 each. ;)

I will, Sally. Tried it on last night with everything and it did look ok. I'm glad I did.

Tkrik, one of the strands on the necklace broke, so now I HAVE to go back to the store! Plus the shoes I got aren't the right size--I think the clerk switched boxes, so I have to exchange them for the larger size.

Coldwater Creek's usually like an Ikea catalog for me. When I get the Ikea catalog, I end up redecorating (mentally) my entire place. Usually I fall into the Coldwater Creek catalog the same way. I'll put the catalog aside "just in case" and throw it out months later when I'm done deluding myself that I need to order something!

Carolina, I liked No. 1 too, but when I tried it on it didn't look at all good on me. I never would have picked that top out myself. In fact, I walked right by it in the store because I had the same reaction to it on the rack. It's really "flowy" material.

The majority has spoken. I'll go with the one they picked out for me with the fishy dress as backup in case I chicken out. :)

Really appreciate your opinions. I've learned it's better to have other people's advice on clothes as I tend to go toward dull, drab colors on my own. Always have. :o

Now to see if they're going to change the rehearsal time. My son KNEW that I was working all day and has known that for months. To think that I drove 5 hours one Saturday so I could go to a family funeral (for 30 minutes) in another state, drive across 3 states, and get to his fiance's bridal shower--and now I have to miss this because they can't wait?:(

soxmom 08-14-2008 07:00 AM

I like the fall one.:o

freeinhou 08-14-2008 07:08 AM

I'm gonna have to go with the fall one too...

I seem to recall having a picture of you standing behind a certain - one of those things you stand behind with just your head showing. At the Kemah boardwalk. I'll have to look for the picture. That looked good on ya too! How long ago was that???

Tom

hollym 08-14-2008 07:49 AM

OK, the fall one was my favorite, too. I think the fishy dress looked really fall, too maybe even more fall than the skirt set. That being said, I DO like the one the clerks chose for you and I think it will be gourgeous on you. We expect picture, you know?

kicker 08-14-2008 07:53 AM

I vote Fishy ,third one I like but looks too warm, Fourth Maude yes, you, not so sure. What do you want? Your own pix - I think too casual.

Kitty 08-14-2008 08:43 AM

:D Maude......that's funny, Kicker!!

I liked the Fall outfit. It's 2 pieces (I think) so you could wear the top with pants and the skirt with other tops. I also like the one the clerk picked out. It's not too bright...I think it would look adorable on you. Just beware of linen pants....wrinkles galore!

I don't know where you live (Mass, I think...right?) so you don't want to wear anything too hot if you're going to be outside.

I really liked the ones Tricia posted. Especially the Tuxedo outfit. That was really cute.

I like Coldwater Creek, too, and have a bunch of their clothes. The have the cutest jeans - some with embroidery. But, that was when I was working so I won't be shopping there anymore. :(

Good luck...and post some pics for us! :)

SandyC 08-17-2008 05:22 PM

Just jumping into the thread. I think the outfit they chose will be beautiful on you even if it isn't something you would normally go for. The only thing I don't like is the light pants. Make sure they have big napkins for you lap! haha

tovaxin_lab_rat 08-17-2008 06:52 PM

Wedding is over. Guess we'll have to wait to see what she ended up wearing.

Tapping foot (learned that from Twippy) waiting for report! :D

Taffy 08-17-2008 07:43 PM

Well?

(Tapping foot and waiting)

So, how long must one wait if one had a little (in this case alot) of Haggis to drink?:D

I don't think you drink that stuff...I think you eat it..I could be wrong...but I think you drink mead and eat Haggis.

But NOT me...think I will stick to Jack Daniels.

:D

Gazelle 08-18-2008 09:40 AM

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts about what I should wear. I ended up wearing what they suggested.

Man, am I exhausted. It was an emotionally draining weekend for many, many reasons.

Gotta go to work now (I took a couple of hours off this morning to sleep in), but will post some pics later. I don't have tons that are good, my grandkids commandeered my camera when I wasn't able to do anything, which apparently was a LOT of the time. I've got some weird pics, like my daughter's boobs and her butt. I suspect that is my son-IL, who has a wicked sense of humor.

yeahbut 08-18-2008 09:46 AM

can't wait for pics! Glad all was well - try to rest!

"Here's a recipe for the beloved Haggis of Scotland. In addition to the other naughty (read 'delectable') bits, the lungs are traditionally included in Scotland, but are omitted here as it's illegal to sell lungs in the U.S. (Any clues as to why, anybody?). Some folks also think that liver shouldn't be used ..."
  • 1 sheep's lung (illegal in the U.S.; may be omitted if not available)
  • 1 sheep's stomach
  • 1 sheep heart
  • 1 sheep liver
  • 1/2 lb fresh suet (kidney leaf fat is preferred)
  • 3/4 cup oatmeal (the ground type, NOT the Quaker Oats type!)
  • 3 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup stock
Wash lungs and stomach well, rub with salt and rinse. Remove membranes and excess fat. Soak in cold salted water for several hours. Turn stomach inside out for stuffing.

Cover heart and liver with cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Chop heart and coarsely grate liver. Toast oatmeal in a skillet on top of the stove, stirring frequently, until golden.

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Loosely pack mixture into stomach, about two-thirds full. Remember, oatmeal expands in cooking.
Press any air out of stomach and truss securely. Put into boiling water to cover. Simmer for 3 hours, uncovered, adding more water as needed to maintain water level. Prick stomach several times with a sharp needle when it begins to swell; this keeps the bag from bursting. Place on a hot platter, removing trussing strings. Serve with a spoon. Ceremoniously served with "neeps, tatties and nips" -- mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, nips of whiskey.

May I just state for the record that there is not enough Mead, Jack, Vodka or any other alcoholic beverage in all of the world that could get me to even sniff this let alone eat it!

Glad everything went well. :)

Ha! I WOULD try haggis and given the chance WILL try it. Just because I've heard it's delicious. Of course, I've tried tripe, souse, pigs feet, tongue (yum), escargot (yum).....

I'll try to get to the pics tomorrow. One of the guys at the wedding is a kid who lived off and on with me and my H since he was about 11. I found out on Saturday evening that he'd taken my car without my permission after the reception. He was really drunk. He also hit something with it. My H had just let him back into the house again so he could get on his feet. But after that, he kicked him out. I had to file a police report indicating that he took the car without permission and hit something, but told the police I didn't want to press charges (at this time). :(

This kid's been my "son" for 14 years. It really hurts and I'm so disappointed in him. :( It's really got me down. That plus it's been extremely emotionally exhausting--so much so that I stayed home from work for a bit this morning so I could sleep.

Bear with me, ladies and gents. I want to post pics but just got them off my camera and don't have the energy to downsize them to post to the forum right now. Maybe tomorrow I will.
