Re: Michael Phelps (the Olympic Swimmer)

I just copied this from my local home page on the internet....

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Michael Phelps

"According to the NY Post, the Olympic swimming sensation eats... 12,000 calories per day.

Here's what a days food intake looks like:

...three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.

He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza.

Apparently he "washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks".

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Now here's Melody's question:

WHY IS THS MAN NOT DEAD?? or diabetic?? or having heart attacks??

I don't care if he swims the English Channel....

12,000 calories A DAY!!!

Good Lord!!!
I couldn't do this on a bet (and I used to be AN EATER)

Twinkletoes 08-14-2008 08:29 PM

I'm not a swimmer (have you heard of water displacement?) but, I eat the very same diet as him. Without the grits.

FaithS 08-14-2008 08:35 PM

I read that too, Melody. Amazing amount of food. Glad I don't pay his grocery bills!!

My DD18 used to swim competitively for most of her growing-up years. She also had a big appetite. Would eat supper prior to 5-7pm swim practice, and come home and eat an entire second supper.

One summer, she had 2 practices a day -- total of 20 hrs. per wk. Swam 7 miles a day that summer, I think. One mile is 66 lengths of a 25m pool.

MelodyL 08-14-2008 08:38 PM

That's another question. Who pays for his food??

lol

Taffy 08-14-2008 09:50 PM

Shelley, he has food!:D

Koala77 08-15-2008 12:30 AM

Michael's same breakfast menu was on Aussie TV this morning!

I'll stick with my tea and toast thank you!

and.........Aussie TV commentators are now saying that Michael Phelps has taken over The Greatest Ever Sportsman title from Mahammad Ali.

How good is that?

Kitty 08-15-2008 04:49 AM

Have you seen his feet??? They look like scuba flippers! Size 14!!! Hmmmmmm???......okay, I'll say no more. :D

Earl 08-15-2008 09:16 AM

He's a freak!! (kidding, I really like him)

He is 6'4" and his arm span is 6'7" normally your arm span matches your height. His feet are size 14, he IS a human fish.
He also has a 30 inch inseam....so do I and I am 5'8" thats un-real

I'm rooting for ya--Go Michael!!!

MelodyL 08-15-2008 10:00 AM

So he has a long upper body, a shorter lower body, a arm span that is not usual, and he eats 12,000 calories a day.

AND HE IS STILL ALIVE, after eating all that fat??

Good Grief.

He's an anomaly, that's for sure.

I bet if ANY OF US ever ate like that, we'd have to be wheeled into the emergency room.

lol

watsonsh 08-15-2008 10:34 AM

He burns 4000 calories in his morning swimming session alone  No wonder he needs 12000, he swims all day

My favrorite fact was his hands are the size of dinner plates.

FaithS 08-15-2008 10:37 AM

Okay, I just watched him winning (thanks so much for the link).

My comment.

I WANT THIS GUY'S DNA!!

I think they should clone his heart, his lungs, his metabolism HIS WHOLE BODY!!

Can you imagine this guy's energy level TO DO WHAT HE DOES??

He either taks A LOT OF B VITAMINS, or, well, I just don't know.

Good Lord!!

ewizabeth 08-16-2008 01:46 PM

This kid is a sensation! :) I'm so proud of him, and all of our athletes!

All I want to know is, how BIG is his stomach anyway? Does he sit there for three hours for a meal? Or does it start to digest as soon as it hits his stomach? I mean, the amount of food for one meal could fill a bucket!

It's just amazing at how much he eats though to do his swimming. Wouldn't it be great to have that problem? Eat as much as you can to keep going? (Somebody, give me a cheeseburger, fries and a shake, I feel weak, trying to get up to 100 lb.) :D

JessieSue 08-16-2008 07:48 PM

He is amazing!! I can't believe anything can flow through those arteries of his freely! Oh well, I guess the guy's doing something right! He sure is doing the USA proud! :D

That he is! Did you see his Mom just slide right out of her chair yesterday?

MelodyL 08-16-2008 09:33 PM

I'm watching the swimming thing on tv right now. Some guy named Maloolie from Tunisia just took it away from Australia.

Oh, this makes me want to go and jump in the pool.

lol

P.S. And I loved Torres. She's 41 and she got the silver.

isn't he about 6' 8"....he's got a lot of body to fill and a lot of calories that he burns every day just working out!

I bet he's got mints...just ask him!!!!

Riverwild 08-16-2008 10:19 PM

*snort*

He's got a body like ME!:D

I can tell you back in the days when I used to swim every day and do 200 laps or more, I could eat anything I wanted and as much as I wanted.

It doesn't work like that anymore...:( The older I get, the slower I get, and the more my car turns towards home and bed at 6:00 a.m, rather than heading towards the c-c-cold pool and the hour long lap swim! Even at home, I haven't been swimming by choice even once this year! When I have a day off, it's 60s and raining!

ewizabeth 08-16-2008 11:03 PM

They just had him on after winning his 8th gold medal. He got to hug his Mom and sisters. It was so great, so heartwarming. What a great story his life has been so far. :) God bless him. Now he's being interviewed. :)

Kitty 08-17-2008 05:57 AM

Oh my gosh.....I watched him last night with my son and we were both just sitting there with our mouths wide open. That guy was amazing. He blew away the record!! What a team the USA had...just amazing.

I loved watching his Mom in the stands, too.

MelodyL 08-17-2008 10:39 AM

I am amazed at what he did also.

BUT.... Just came back from breakfast at Lucky 8's News Cafe.

Everybody was talking about the 7th Gold Medal (the one where he won by one 100th of a point).

The guy said "he lost. I saw the video, I saw the picture in the paper, he actually lost, they gave it to him because he's an American".

I said "that's not possible, it's all done by sensors, and the people who are in charge of the sensors, well they investigated it and they concluded he WON!!!

The guy said "I don't believe it, the other guy won".

So what do you all think?

Melody

Kitty 08-17-2008 10:41 AM

Sounds like sour grapes to me!! :p

he won. the video shows it. the other guy's last stroke was too early and he was coasting to long. michaels last stroke pushed him forward and he touched first.

the touch pad and videos both proved it.

it was very exciting to watch.

weegot5kiz 08-17-2008 04:03 PM

yes phelps reached in at last moment the other swimmer Cavich lifted his head out of water and that was the difference in the race, they said that move slowed him down just a hair, and by golly thats what he lost by just a hair

Now the 41 yr old mother of one Torres, lost by same degree of margin .001 and she said darn i shouldnt of clipped my nails, lol I liked that answer,

who moi 08-19-2008 02:12 PM

Dara was awesome...at 41 she's posted some fastest times!

Phelps is a phenom...

I did hoped that when it came to team events, that they would give other swimmers equal time...because it took all four of them to get that medal...

oh well, such is television politics...

weegot5kiz 08-19-2008 02:22 PM

I think thats why he even interrupted the TV person talking to them by poolside and made sure it was known that without his friends and team mates none of what he went through would be possible, I felt that was a very classy thing to do, he knew the media would just talk to him and wanted to make sure they got acknowledged

KathyM 08-26-2008 01:01 AM

MY SON WON A GOLD MEDAL!* YIPPEE!! :)
OK, my son's friend won a Gold Medal!*
OK, a kid my son knew in high school won a Gold Medal in the Olympics!* :D*

Dwayne Wade - U.S. Men's Basketball

Better yet, they did it with such style and grace.* I was secretly hoping they'd pose after their defeat over Spain by lifting up the corners of their mouths with their fingers - but that's just me.*

I had faith in Dwayne, but I wasn't so sure about the rest of them.* They all worked beautifully together.* It was a class act for them all to place their gold medals around the neck of their coach.* :grouphug:

Just thought I would post this photo for all the Michael Phelps fans. This is the first known photo of Michael Phelps.
