Periodic Server Problems

We seem to have some server glitches taking us offline periodically today. Doc will have this fixed asap so dont be concerned if you struggle to access NT or PC. Just keep trying and hopefully all will be fixed soon

Chemar 08-23-2008 06:08 PM

:bump:

just to let everyone know Doc is aware of this and working on it

sorry to all who have been struggling to get in

Curious 08-23-2008 06:10 PM

might be good idea to not tax the server with trying to load pictures, until we hear from doc.

Blessings2You 08-23-2008 06:16 PM

I was in withdrawal. I had to take a double dose of choc....er, I mean, medication. Heh heh.

yeahbut 08-23-2008 07:02 PM

SandyC 08-23-2008 07:19 PM

weegot5kiz 08-23-2008 08:02 PM

ewizabeth 08-24-2008 12:50 AM

I just got on. Oh the suspense! :icon_cry: I emailed AMN to find out what was going on. :Bawling: :nopity:I had withdrawal symptoms ... :Bawling: :Bawling: :Bawling:

My apologies for yesterday's outages. We worked throughout the day with our server technical team to try and troubleshoot the server's issues. We believe (but won't know for sure until today carries on) that we temporarily (at least) fixed the problem.

The plan is to move all of the front-end software off of the problem server within 2 weeks' time (although sooner will be attempted if scheduling allows). All of the data that makes up the heart of our forums (your posts and PMs) reside on a different server that is running normally.

When we get ready for the move, I will give a few days' heads-up notice because it takes a little while for the Internet to propagate the change to the server's location (since it's a new, different server). This will mean that there may be a very short time (usually less than a few hours) where you *may* not be able to access the forums. Like I said, though, I will let you know when to expect this.

Again, my apologies for the outages -- we're actively working on them and will ensure NeuroTalk is around for another 2+20 years!! :)

Thanks for your understanding and patience,
John

Wow, and from the looks of her little dog Toto too, we could be in trouble!!! :D

Actually (I can see people shaking their heads at me now) I've been having trouble with only NT for quite awhile now. Had a lot of problems getting the pages to load etc. Not just on this computer either. (Yes, I always clear everything when I sign off my computer.)

It'll be nice to see if this stops happening now. :)

Thanks Doc John for caring about us. It's nice to know the person behind the scenes really really really does like us! :D (Bows and accepts the academy award on behalf of all NT folks.)

SandyC 08-24-2008 11:55 AM

Your not alone Doody. Renee was telling me she was having issues for a couple of days too.

Thanks for the update Doc!

DocJohn 08-24-2008 11:59 AM

Yup, we're keeping an eye on things today and will try and get the site moved over as soon as we can...

Thanks Doc! You're doing a terrific job and it does not go unnoticed!

Chemar 08-24-2008 04:06 PM

Doc just notified us that some of the very very looooong threads are possibly putting extra load on the current server so we are going to be closing some of those and requesting that members start new threads and maybe keep post count to around 100 and then start another.

Sorry for the inconvenience but I am sure all agree best to keep the old server up and running for now till we move over to new one

SandyC 08-24-2008 04:37 PM

Thanks for the info. I just started a new Insights thread.

NaeNae 08-24-2008 04:46 PM

PFFFFFTTT :p and I was so proud my Insights thread was so long LOL. Oh well I'd rather be able to long in! Thansk for all your hard work! Sheesh I mean thanks, see its causing me to drink and make typos LOL!

Chemar 08-24-2008 05:57 PM

I just wanted to clarify too that I have only suggested 100 posts per thread as that seemed a good round number:p

it really is only the super long threads that have hundreds of pages that may be problematic so in the normal course of discussion if a topic has more than 100 posts that wont be a problem...it is just those continuing threads that we need to be watchful of going on too long.....but please dont feel that once 100 posts made you cant reply.....that isnt a problem on threads that will eventually fade once the topic is talked out..............

this really only refers to those threads that are ongoing ones......:Talkative:

:D

NaeNae 08-24-2008 07:02 PM

Gosh Chemar and 5000 wasn't a good round number :p

AfterMyNap 08-24-2008 08:09 PM

Hey you guys, clean out or download your PMs and dump excess attached files. Throw DM overboard, that will lighten the load!

lol well seems your good round number is too high and mine was a bit low:o

Doc is defining a long thread as one with 1000 posts or 100 pages @ 10 posts per page......

so I guess 500 posts per thread would be the new good round number

:Trapeze 2:

weegot5kiz 08-25-2008 12:23 AM

should we also clean out our profile conversations I know I have a few pages of messages

if y'all could pm chemar, jo or i, if you find a long thread not yet closed, that would be great. we have tried to find as many as we can, but there are wayyyyy more of y'all then us. :D

DocJohn 08-25-2008 07:47 AM

Hi folks, just to clarify...

We don't need anyone to clear out any large images or PMs or anything of that sort. Nothing like that hurts our server (and in fact, we want to encourage members to share whatever they'd like with one another that helps them).

But super long threads made up of thousands of replies can tax the server a little. Usually that's not a problem, but when a search engine is indexing those threads in the rapid manner they often do, it can spike our loads to where everything comes to a crawl. So the easy solution is just to keep such threads limited to under 100 pages in the future...

Everything else you can continue doing as usual. It's no single member's behavior or anything of that sort that is causing our recent issues. It's just a combination of a whole bunch of little things that seem to be happening, so we're just trying to do what we can in the short-term to keep everything up and running until we move over to the new server. And to not press our luck with the new server, we're likely to keep the 100-page thread limitation in place.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding, :)
John

Tootsie 08-25-2008 01:26 PM

I'm glad you mentioned this as I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get to Neurotalk. I'd click no the sight in my menu and nothing happened.

Or I'd get the message 'not available'.

Right now all seems okay.

Diane:confused:

ewizabeth 08-25-2008 02:49 PM

DocJohn,

I echo those sentiments. We really, really appreciate all you do for us, and that you do it so well.

Wow...

I was sure in the dark.....I came in to the laundromat and
there was a huge nothing from here! I finally borrowed my son's iPhone when he arrived on Sat...and we saw the fix.

But there was no way for me to find out how things were going until then. I have to admit I was worried....(bites nails).

I am so glad things are fixed for now....I really feel at home here, and truly appreciate all the admins/mods and DocJohn's efforts!

Doody 08-27-2008 10:31 AM

John

I use the 40 posts per page option, so in order to keep under the 1000 posts, I should use, less than, 25 pages.;)

Thank You Doc..
