Those unknown callers...

We're on the do not call list, and I realize that some entities are exempt from that, but I'm so torqued this morning I could bite something.

On Fridays I'm so exhausted, about all I do is sit and wait for it to be bedtime. At 8:00, I took all my meds, organized all my various pillows and mechanisms in my recliner, arranged my legs hopefully to avoid spasms, and drifted off into blessed zzzzz's.

At 9:00, the phone rang, scared me half to death because ALL of my family and friends know not to call after 8:00 unless it's an emergency. I untangled myself, lurched to the phone, just to hear silence, and see an 877 number with an unknown caller.

My heart was pounding, my arms were shaking. I would have cried, but I was too tired. This morning I tried to reverse lookup the number, but of course, it wasn't found. Anybody know 877 213 5213???

I'm going to try calling the number to see what happens. You know how it is: one night's sleep messed up, and it takes three days to get it together again.

Grrrrrrrrr.

I'm sorry that call scared you, B2Y. I rarely get calls after 8 PM and even at 9 PM it concerns me. Usually it's just one of my boys letting me know they'll be late but when it's an unknown number it does frighten me a bit.

Of course, my curiosity was tweaked by the number you listed so I dialed it..........are you ready for this???? It was the NMSS calling to see if you would volunteer!!!

Blessings2You 08-23-2008 08:11 AM

Are you KIDDING ME???? Well, I'll definitely be calling that number! I wonder if "headquarters" knows about this?

Blessings2You 08-23-2008 08:18 AM

Well, I called the number, and listened to the whole spiel. Of course they already called me a few days ago and wrestled me into handing out their stupid cards (see Dejibo's thread). I guess that wasn't enough, they wanted to wake me up and then hang up on me.

At the end of the recorded stuff, there was the opportunity to enter my phone number in their "do not call" list, which I did. They promised that it would be removed "within 30 days". Thirty days?? I feel so supported.

yeahbut 08-23-2008 08:20 AM

isn't that the second NMSS call someone has spoke about on here recently? Sorry this happened to you B2U

Curious 08-23-2008 09:59 AM

Just type in the number from your caller ID. Home or Cell phone. You can also report the number. :D

sorry you had a rough night b2y

Curious 08-23-2008 10:28 AM

btw...solicators do have up to 9pm (your time!) to call.

there are different times for weekends and how early they can start.

i'll try and find those. since we have had salepeople in our business, we had to stick to the rules. even to call back people who called us. (btw...we never cold called...why set your employees up for that???)

yeahbut 08-23-2008 07:20 PM

B2U - did you call them back? What did they say?

SandyC 08-23-2008 07:29 PM

I hate when that happens. The PVA calls us all the time and now St Jude because we donate to them. The last call I too got suckered into the "We're not calling for a donation but could you pass out some cards for donations?" UGH

I heard on the news that they are trying to pass a law for no more pre-recorded telemarket cold calls. I am all for that law!!!! Now, if only we could get a law for those stupid cell phone text message ads.

Hopefully that includes all the pre-recorded calls from politicians.

I really dont like it when the phone rings and <annoying politician> is talking like a blithering idiot in my ear. Makes me not want to vote for the person, even if they're someone I was planning on voting. Some of these calls happen every day or more than two or three times a week.

Blessings2You 08-24-2008 05:24 AM

I think politicians are exempt from the Do Not Call rules, as well as certain other groups...maybe charitable organizations and companies/organizations you've contacted or done business with?

I tell them ALL, "Send it to me in the mail. We don't do business over the phone." I can pick my mail up whenever I want to, and read it when and IF I want to. And my mail has NEVER interupted my sleep!!

When Bob's having a bad breathing day, I leave the (dial-up) internet connected so he doesn't have to deal with getting to the phone just to find a recording that he doesn't understand, or have someone badgering him.

Dejibo 08-24-2008 08:14 AM

I gotta tell ya, nothing chaps my fannie faster than someone calling to stick their hand in my pocket or convince of that their candidate is better, faster, stonger or more fitting to my cause than their candidate. I live in NH and we are among the first to hold primaries for presidential candidates, and that means door knockers, phone ringers, pamphlets (how many trees did they kill for those?) our streets are littered with signs and flyers for months after they leave. I get ANGRY when you call my house after 8 at night.

I have my phone blocked so number one, you CANT call from a blocked number. I occasionally get a unknown name, unknown caller, and that is odd since I have all blocked, and you are not supposed to be able to by pass like that.

I give ALOT to many causes. I not only give time, energy, resources, and support, I give money, and plenty of it. The last time I gave to the MS society, I did so on the condition that they NOT share my information. Once a charity gets you to give, they have other charities that BUY that list of givers from their data base. unless you spefically ask to be EXCLUDED from that list, your name goes on it. That is why shortly after you donat to the american cancer society or the red cross, your phone starts rining and your mail box is full of address stickers from other causes.

I always tell them. I will give to whom I chose to give to WHEN I chose to give. there is nothing you can say/do to make that happen any faster. Please take me off your calling list, and dont call again, or my normal contribution will stop.

Make sure that IF you chose to give, that you are giving to causes that use your money to benefit your cause. there are so many out there that spend 80% of the money for their board of trustees, and directors, and then 10% goes to staffing, and endorsements, and then less than 10% goes to the cause. Give to reputable sources.

I will be so happy when this election is OVER!

kicker 08-24-2008 09:18 AM

I donated too and so they called me wanting more. I burst into tears because it was one more reminder of what I can't do, handed the phone to DD as I sobbed loudly, she told them "she can't talk right now". They've never called again.

SandyC 08-24-2008 12:10 PM

I have come up with a great idea, at least for Jim and I. We have decided to now give at the Red Cross ringing bell person, those standing in the streets (Kiwanas, VFW, etc), to the firemen who collect at xmas, any organization with a box in the stores, etc. This way no one can get my name, addy or phone number. :D

I will continue to give to St Jude, PVA, VFW Women's organization, and the NMSS. But if they call me again I am going to politely ask them to not call anymore and to simply accept the donation I give as my contribution or I will stop. Period.

Being anonymous is fine for anyone who doesn't deduct charitable contributions on the tax forms.

That's true. We don't file so we don't get any kick back from donating.
