Tried Coloring Hair
I have been trying to save money and coloring my own hair for the last year or so..... well - have a few meetings this week that I decided I didn't need to have gray roots for these meetings so I bought one of those boxes to color my hair.
My arms are so numb and full of spasms this morning it took me a lot longer than usual.... lifting my arms above my head was pretty difficult and now I get a break for 25 mins before I have to spend the time washing it out. I think it was a bad day to decide to color my hair cause I am paying for dearly now.... :( |
I color my hair at home, too, Char. There's no way I could afford to have it done in a salon. I just did mine yesterday and it killed my arms. I had to keep starting and stopping. But I can get away with doing it about once every 8 weeks. I use a color so close to my own natural color that I don't get the roots too bad. I do it for the shine and the body it gives my hair.
Now...if I could just figure out how to cut my own hair without causing too much damage I'd be set!! |
LOL Kelly!
I tried to cut my own hair last spring and I was trying to cut it down the side of my face and *SNIP*! I kinda looked in the mirror and said OOPPS!!! LOL. I finally got to see my regular hair dresser and she fixed it for me...and I splurged and got my hair colored too. I'm afraid to color my own hair... Hope it turns out perfect yeahbut and thanks for the request :D |
I have colored my own hair for 15 yrs. I started graying in my teens, by 30 it was pretty intense.
 Last time, I tried Clairol Perfect 10. It was about $11. Comes with a comb-style applicator, instead of trying to squirt all the stuff from a bottle tip. WOW, did that go on fast! Took less than half the time! Maybe 1/3, 1/4 the time to get in on my hair. Then, you only have to leave it on 10-15 minutes, instead of 20-35 minutes. Rinsed out easy too. Two thumbs up! Okay, it costs more than some, and there aren't as many colors to chose from. I can deal with that for the ease of use and saving all that time! My arms were fine after doing my hair. Awesome! |
I get my b/f and kids to help me. :D

I love the way my hair feels after I get done too! Oh, if I could cut my own hair I would be so happy.... I do at times snip the ends - my hair is pretty much one length but curly so it is hard to do, but when I do go see the hair dresser she always says "Char you have been cutting your hair again haven't you?" Busted!!!!
I use a color very close to my own also so I only have to do it about every 8 weeks too. If it wasn't for the gray hair!!!! all done now though.... rinsed and conditioned - my arms are killing me but I can have a Baclofen here in a few minutes so that is good!! |

You're braver than I, little lambchop! I tried it once. Once.
Haircolor is my only vanity and I indulge it, a good friend has been doing my hair for 20 years now. I'd freak if I had to go to someone else! |
We so fortunate to have a beauty school in town so I go there for cuts and color. It is so much cheaper and they do a great job since they have instructors right there.
Last time I colored my own hair I spilled solution all over and ruined two towels. |
I managed ok, it took a little longer than usual and my arms are still full of spasms but that is ok, I washed that gray right out of my hair!! and it feels so much better! :D
|
I color my own hair also. Can't afford to have it done at the salon.
Do the same thing Char snip my hair here and there and when I do go to have it cut my girl also goes YOU HAVE BEEN SNIPPING AGAIN! I take after my father, when the roots start coming out they are pure white not gray. That shows up so fast because my natural color is brown. When I do my hair I get the color all over it seems. The bottle slips out of my hands and at times the hand starts shaking and gets on me. OOO! the fun that we have Jappy |
Glad to hear it came out well!
quietly pulls a few more grays and plants them on Yabbit's head I colored my hair once, used the Hydrience Palomino blonde, closest to my normal color (without the gray it IS that color!) I don't know if I didn't leave it in long enough or if the grays are just too tough for that kind of color, but the way it felt when I was done and it was dry put me off from ever doing it again! I still had gray hairs and it literally felt like dolls hair, or horse tail hair or something! I am so used to having the LONG silky hair that it drove me NUTS! I poured bottles of conditioner on for weeks! It finally lost that strange texture and ever since, it's been "let 'em grow in gray!" |

Well, RW, what did you expect??? You did use Palomino Blonde!! |
I tried coloring my hair for years. I did well when there wasn't gray and I only highlighted. Now that I am almost completely gray I have it done by my salon. It does cost but I could never get the color I wanted once it went gray. So, I go every two months and pay anywhere from 40-80 depending on what needs to be done. That includes the cut too.
I do wish I could do it at home though. I miss the convenience factor. |
Jappy - I am the same way!!!
RW - I can't imagine it drying your hair out! Everytime I color my hair it is so silky soft - I love the way it feels. I can't tell you what brand I used - that was 10 hours ago!! I think it was Lorelle Natural or something like that!!! |
RW - Glad your color came out good!
I have been coloring my own hair for about 6 months now. I haven't got the hang of getting all the gray though. Everytime I do it, I still see some gray I missed, but it gets most of it. I'm always afraid to do it, but so far I haven't had any disasters. I don't like going to the salon and having to sit there for hours to have this done. I don't like spending my only little time off work like that, so it's more convenient and less expensive to do it myself. Hopefully I get the hang of it one day. I have very very thick hair and I always buy two boxes of color, but I still tend to miss some. |
I read this whole thread through, and by the time I'd finished you all had me convinced to have my hair colored again.
I'd let my (bottle) blonde tips all grow out, as I now have heaps of my own natural ones  ...but after reading this, I think I need to get them done again. So....I just made an appointment for a cut and color, and hopefully will be looking bootiful again within a week or two. :D Thank you Char for starting this thread. The pickup will do me good.:) |
Just got my hair cut before my son's wedding and walked in the shop to see that my stylist had colored her hair 3 different colors! It looked awesome on her. She was taking a trip to CA and wanted to be a bit funky.
The bottom layer was dark, dark brown, the middle layer (small layer) was bright pink, and the top layer was almost a platinum blonde. She looked like a beautiful good-n-plenty! It actually was pretty tasteful, if you can imagine a 3 color hair job like that. I told her I would LOVE to do something crazy like that. :D |
Hair is my vanity, found a stylist who made a beautiful natural looking red for me (I was naturally dark blonde-red), reds are tough, I get compliments, don't smoke, don't drink, it's what I do. IF I had to do it myself, I know at this point I'd make an awful mess. DD, 16, has a friend who cuts and colors, all girls look better and different after each sleep-over and while I wouldn't let her cut my hair, color would be a go. She has stripped (black!!!) to blonde (with pink and brown highlights), now DD is an auburn red. Her hair looks great!!! Beauty schools, high school tech. schools are all are full of kids who want to do hair. Color also can be corrected IF something happens. Cut at your own risk. At 53, week 7 starts showing grey, if I'm not going out, stretch it a little. Then I go to my person,Hey, I'm worth it.

I noticed that I didn't get all the gray either - the very top of my head near the front is what gray's first and gosh is it ever stubborn!! It colors much better if I don't wait the full 10 weeks, if I do it every 8 weeks I get a much better color. I only use one box but really should use 2.
Its funny cause neither my daughter or David noticed that it was done. I finally asked DD and she said well mum, no I didn't notice until I saw the box in the trash! Glad I could help Koala - I am sure you are beautiful without a new doo!! but, I now it sure helps my confidence level boost just a little! |
I have been using those temporary rinse things, but noticed lately, its not covering all the grey, and wow it washes out faster than I expected or liked. I have been thinking about switching to a regular color product. I will definatly do it myself at home. We have limited salons around here, and the one in town is $80 to $100 bucks. that includes the cut, and style. I WONT afford that every 2 months. that is just silly. I can afford a $12 bottle of color. If I travel 30 minutes ONE WAY I can get to a more reasonable place $40 to $60 including the cut, but that still alot of money. I will enlist the DH to help. he hates when I come home saying "honey! guess what I bought?" he knows it involves him. hehe.

i would think it would do an awesome job on grey hair. it coverd her pink totally. she is 14 and did it herself. the applicator made it easy. my hair is totally grown out. no highlights even. in the best condition it has been in year. but i am sooo itchy to go back blonde. :D |
